(In)formal social participation of immigrants - are migrants from Poland socially active?

    Get PDF
The analysis of the patterns of formal and informal participation of Polish migrants in nine selected countries shows the prevalence of informal modes of engagement over the formal ones. This is especially visible while analysing formal membership and volunteering in NGOs, which are typically used as indicators of a formal engagement. In both cases - non-immigrant NGOs and PIOs - their values are relatively low, and in each case do not exceed 6% of the researched population. On the other hand, the indicators of informal engagement are significantly higher. This applies especially to some of the dimensions of informal social activities like selfless help for neighbours and other people in close social environment, collecting for those in need and different forms of internet activity

The State, Diaspora Policy and Immigrant Organizations - Lessons from the Polish Case

    Get PDF
This paper examines the relations between immigrant organizations and the institutions of their state of origin as well as the influence of those relations on situation of such organizations. It focuses specifcally on the case of Poland over the period 1989-2015 in which signifcant changes with regards to diaspora policy were introduced. In other words, a shift from a model based on capacity building policies to a model focused on extracting obligations from the diaspora has taken place. These changes have had considerable impact on the role and capacity of Polish immigrant organizations as well as their relations with the Polish state

The Efficient Computational Tools For The Design Process Of The Transcritical Two-Phase Ejectors For Natural-Based Working Fluids

    Get PDF
Naturalbased working fluids for refrigeration are becoming a standard commercial solution due to the dynamic research and development in this area as well as law regulations. The stateoftheart ejector technology for R744 systems reached current status due to a significant interest on modelling approaches and effective regulation concepts. The development path of the fast and efficient design tools based on the numerical simulations could be described as a key feature for the R744 commercial technology. In this study, one of the most effective numerical approaches dedicated for the twophase CO2 ejector design and analysis is discussed. Namely, homogeneous equilibrium and relaxation model for high motive pressures and mixture approach for lower motive pressures were reviewed. According to the requirements of the effective design tools, the comparison also included a prediction of the vapour quality at given operating conditions and the corresponding computational costs. Moreover, several research studies on swirling and bypassing solutions as well as commercial applications of multiejector device and reduced order models for regulation systems where aforementioned models were used was described. Conclusions on a potential of the reviewed approaches were formulated having regard possible utilisation for the design process of the ejector based R744 systems

Coarse and uniform embeddings between Orlicz sequence spaces

We give an almost complete description of the coarse and uniform embeddability between Orlicz sequence spaces. We show that the embeddability between two Orlicz sequence spaces is in most cases determined only by the values of their upper Matuszewska-Orlicz indices. On the other hand, we present examples which show that sometimes the embeddability is not determined by the values of these indices.Comment: 12 pages. This is the final version. Plugin Networks for Inference under Partial Evidence

In this paper, we propose a novel method to incorporate partial evidence in the inference of deep convolutional neural networks. Contrary to the existing, top performing methods, which either iteratively modify the input of the network or exploit external label taxonomy to take the partial evidence into account, we add separate network modules ("Plugin Networks") to the intermediate layers of a pre-trained convolutional network. The goal of these modules is to incorporate additional signal, ie information about known labels, into the inference procedure and adjust the predicted output accordingly. Since the attached plugins have a simple structure, consisting of only fully connected layers, we drastically reduced the computational cost of training and inference. At the same time, the proposed architecture allows to propagate information about known labels directly to the intermediate layers to improve the final representation. Extensive evaluation of the proposed method confirms that our Plugin Networks outperform the state-of-the-art in a variety of tasks, including scene categorization, multi-label image annotation, and semantic segmentation.Comment: Accepted to WACV 202

Doppler-Guided Hemorrhoid Artery Ligation with Recto-Anal-Repair Modification: Functional Evaluation and Safety Assessment of a New Minimally Invasive Method of Treatment of Advanced Hemorrhoidal Disease

    Get PDF
Purpose: We present 12-month followup results of functional evaluation and safety assessment of a modification of hemorrhoidal artery ligation (DGHAL) called Recto-Anal-Repair (RAR) in treatment of advanced hemorrhoidal disease (HD). Methods: Patients with grade III and IV HD underwent the RAR procedure (DGHAL combined with restoration of prolapsed hemorrhoids to their anatomical position with longitudinal sutures). Each patient had rectal examination, anorectal manometry, and QoL questionnaire performed before 3 months, and 12 months after RAR procedure. Results: 20 patients completed 12-month followup. There were no major complications. 3 months after RAR, 5 cases of residual mucosal prolapse were detected (25%), while only 3 patients (15%) reported persistence of symptoms. 12 months after RAR, another 3 HD recurrences were detected, to a total of 8 patients (40%) with HD recurrence. Anal pressures after RAR were significantly lower than before (P < 0.05), and the effect was persistent 12 months after RAR. One patient (5%) reported occasional soiling 3 months after RAR. Conclusions: RAR seems to be a safe method of treatment of advanced HD with no major complications. The procedure has a significant influence on anal pressures, with no evidence of risk of fecal incontinence after the operation

Heat Transfer Process Within The R744 Two-phase Ejector: Numerical And Experimental Study

The proposed three dimensional CFD model to simulate the influence of the heat transfer on the R744 two-phase ejector performance is presented. The numerical model was developed based on the homogeneous real fluid flow assumption with the enthalpy-based formulation of the energy equation. The R744 two-phase ejector was designed to evaluate the temperature profile within the ejector walls. The prototype R744 ejector for experimental investigation was manufactured by Institute of Thermal Technology and ATM in Poland. The performance measurements were carried out at a R744 test facility at SINTEF/NTNU in Norway. The foregoing ejector was equipped with the thirteen thermocouples located inside the ejector to measure the wall temperature in different ejector section i.e. the motive nozzle, the suction nozzle, the mixing section and the diffuser. The experimental test campaign at different operating conditions typical for refrigeration application was carried out and the uncertainty of the measurement was defined. Moreover, the experimental data are applied to validate the CFD results at defined operating conditions. The numerical results were set to evaluate the influence of the wall temperature on the two-phase flow parameters. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient of the two-phase flow within the ejector was estimated. The analysis of the heat transfer process within the R744 two-phase ejector let to investigate the influence of the ambient conditions and the different temperature levels of the motive and suction streams on the ejector performance
