    Differential relationship of coping styles with well-being and ill-being of professional firemen

    In the present study we were interested in how coping styles relate to different indicators of well- and ill-being. We assumed that coping styles are differently related to well- and ill-being indicators because they are theoretically and empirically independent from each other. To examine this assumption we asked 139 professional firemen to fill in measures of coping styles (COPE, EAS), well-being (PANAS, SWLS) and ill-being (IES-R, PANAS). The results confirmed the overall importance of non-constructive coping for illbeing and well-being, whereas constructive coping predicted only positive emotionality. The prototypical masculine working environment characteristic for our sample could be the cause that socially/emotionally oriented coping is the weakest predictor of well-being, although other studies report the adaptive role of conscientious dealing with individual’s own emotions as a coping style. Both well- and ill-being measures should be used to get an insight into a complex area of individual’s adaptation to stress

    UVOD: Mnogobrojni radovi na području fi zikalne terapije bave se problematikom hoda, koja ima mnoge čimbenike. Manji dio radova bavi se razjašnjavanjem uvjeta potrebnih da bi se postigao hod. Cilj ovog rada je ukazati na mnogobrojne složene razvojne obrasce koji su potrebni da bi dijete prohodalo. METODE RADA: Provedena je neurorazvojna terapija djece prema Bobath konceptu u kućnim uvjetima. U ispitivanje je uključeno 16 djece, podijeljeno u četiri skupine: I - zdrava, II - ona koja su kasnila u motoričkom razvoju, III - neurorizična i IV - djeca s oštećenjem središnjeg živčanog sustava. REZULTATI: Zdrava djeca, koja vježbom nisu poticana, prohodala su u dobi između 13 i 14 mjeseci starosti. Skupina neurorizičnih ispitanika, koja nije pokazivala patološku kliničku sliku, bila je uključena u rani preventivni poticajni Bobath tretman i prohodala je nešto ranije od skupine I. Djeca inicijalno većih oštećenja središnjeg živčanog sustava, s kojima terapija nije započeta dovoljno rano, niti dostatnim intenzitetom, kasnila su u motoričkom razvoju. Prohodala su u prosjeku s 3.5 godine starosti. Ovdje navodimo da je uzorak (pre) malen. ZAKLJUČAK: Cilj ovog rada je postignut. Iz rezultata je vidljivo da su djeca koja su ranije započela rani neurorazvojni tretman i provodila ga većom učestalošću, prohodala prije nego djeca koja nisu uključena u rani tretman

    Self-reported Emotional and Social Intelligence and Empathy as Distinctive Predictors of Narcissism

    In the study, we were interested in the association between narcissism and three psychological constructs, which are considered important in interpersonal relationships – emotional intelligence (EI), social intelligence (SI) and empathy. We supposed that narcissism is positively correlated with EI and with the processing of social information and social skills facets of SI. At the same time, negative correlations between narcissism and social awareness and empathy were expected. The results were gathered upon 306 participants aged from 19 to 26 years (242 females and 64 males), who completed the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), the Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire (ESCQ), the Tromsø Social Intelligence Scale (TSIS) and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). The results supported the assumption of positive association between narcissism, EI and SI, while accompanying negative association with empathy. EI, social skills, perspective taking, emphatic concern and age together explain 28% of variance in predicting narcissism. Results support our expectation about differential relationship of EI, SI, and empathy with narcissism and thus confirming differential validity of these three construct

    This dictionary provides comprehensive information on the vocabulary used in the Slovenian literary language during the period of the Reformation. It was written based on complete concordance from all editions of Slovenian texts from the period 1550-1603. The word entries are accompanied by grammatical information, such as the part of speech used and other grammatical data. The extent of their use is shown by the attributed sources. The features of the linguistic system of that period are also shown by numerous notices regarding written, phonological and morphological variations.Slovarsko delo je prva celovita informacija o besedju, uporabljenem v drugi polovici 16. stoletja. Nastalo je na osnovi popolnih izpisov vseh knjižnih izdaj s slovenskim besedilom iz obdobja 1550–1603. Besede so opremljene z besednovrstnimi in drugimi slovničnimi podatki, na obseg njihove rabe pa kažejo pripisani viri. Na značilnosti tedanjega jezikovnega sistema kažejo tudi številna obvestila o pisni, glasoslovni in oblikoslovni variantnosti

    Procjena probiotičkih svojstava soja Lacticaseibacillus casei 431® izoliranog iz hrane za posebne medicinske potrebe

    Research background. Increasing awareness of the importance of nutrition in health promotion and disease prevention has driven to the development of foods for special medical purposes (FSMPs). In this study, the probiotic strain Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei (Lacticaseibacillus casei 431®) was incorporated into FSMPs to develop an innovative product. The aim was to investigate the influence of the FSMP matrix on the specific probiotic properties of L. casei 431® in vitro. Experimental approach. A series of in vitro experiments were performed as part of the probiotic approach. After evaluation of antibiotic susceptibility profiles, functional properties such as survival under simulated gastrointestinal tract (GIT) conditions, bile salt deconjugation activities, cholesterol assimilation, antagonistic activity against spoilage bacteria and adhesion to Caco-2 cell line monolayers and extracellular matrix proteins were investigated. Results and conclusions. The L. casei 431® strain, both the lyophilised strain and the strain isolated from the FSMP matrix, effectively survived the simulated adverse gastrointestinal conditions without significant effects of the food matrix. The effect of the FSMP matrix on the deconjugation activity of the bile salts of L. casei 431® was minimal; however, cholesterol assimilation was increased by 16.4 %. L. casei 431® had antibacterial activity against related lactic acid bacteria regardless of whether it was used in FSMPs or not. Conversely, the probiotic strain isolated from FSMP matrix had significantly higher inhibitory activity against six potential pathogens than the lyophilised culture. The autoaggregation ability of the L. casei 431® cells was not affected by the FSMP matrix. The adhesion of L. casei 431® bacterial cells to the extracellular matrix proteins was reduced after treatment with proteinase K, with the highest adhesion observed to laminin. The adhesion of L. casei 431® reduced the binding of E. coli 3014 by 1.81 log units and the binding of S. Typhimurium FP1 to Caco-2 cell lines by 1.85 log units, suggesting the potential for competitive exclusion of these pathogens. Novelty and scientific contribution. The results support the positive effect of the FSMP matrix on the specific probiotic properties of L. casei 431®, such as antibacterial activity, bile salt deconjugation and cholesterol assimilation, while the incorporation of this probiotic strain adds functional value to the FSMPs. The synergistic effect achieved by the joint application of L. casei 431® and innovative FSMP matrix contributed to the development of the novel formulation of an improved functional food product with added value.Pozadina istraživanja. Sve veća svijest o važnosti prehrane u promicanju zdravlja i prevenciji bolesti dovela je do razvoja hrane za posebne medicinske potrebe (HPMP). U ovom je istraživanju probiotički soj Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei (Lacticaseibacillus casei 431®) uključen u razvoj inovativnog proizvoda HPMP. Svrha je istraživanja bila in vitro ispitati utjecaj HPMP na specifična probiotička svojstva soja L. casei 431®. Eksperimentalni pristup. U okviru probiotičkog koncepta proveden je niz in vitro eksperimenata. Nakon ispitivanja osjetljivosti na antibiotike, istražena su funkcionalna svojstva kao što su: preživljavanje u simuliranim uvjetima gastrointestinalnog trakta, dekonjugacija žučnih soli, asimilacija kolesterola, antagonistička aktivnost prema patogenim bakterijama te adhezija na Caco-2 stanice i proteine ekstracelularnog matriksa. Rezultati i zaključci. Soj L. casei 431®, izoliran iz HPMP-a i kao čista liofilizirana kultura, preživio je simulirane nepovoljne gastrointestinalne uvjete bez bitnog učinka HPMP-a. Učinak HPMP-a na dekonjugaciju žučnih soli pomoću L. casei 431® bio je minimalan, dok se asimilacija kolesterola povećala za 16,4 %. Soj L. casei 431® imao je antibakterijski učinak na srodne bakterije mliječne kiseline, bez obzira na to je li korišten kao čista liofilizirana kultura ili u HPMP-u. Probiotički soj izoliran iz HPMP-a imao je bitno veću inhibicijsku aktivnost spram šest potencijalnih patogena u usporedbi s čistom liofiliziranom kulturom. HPMP nije utjecao na autoagregaciju stanica L. casei 431®. Nakon obrade proteinazom K, adhezija bakterijskih stanica L. casei 431® na proteine ekstracelularnog matriksa se smanjila, pri čemu je najveća adhezija ostvarena na lamininu. Adhezijom L. casei 431® na Caco-2 stanice smanjilo se vezivanje E. coli 3014 za 1,81 log jedinica, a vezivanje S. Typhimurium FP1 za 1,85 log jedinica, što upućuje na mogućnost kompetitivne ekskluzije ovih patogena. Novina i znanstveni doprinos. Rezultati potvrđuju pozitivan učinak HPMP-a na specifična probiotička svojstva soja L. casei 431®, poput antibakterijske aktivnosti, dekonjugacije žučnih soli i asimilacije kolesterola, a time i funkcionalnu vrijednost HPMP proizvoda. Sinergijski učinak postignut zajedničkom primjenom L. casei 431® i inovativnog sastava HMPM-a pridonio je razvoju nove formulacije poboljšanog, funkcionalnog prehrambenog proizvoda s dodanom vrijednošću

    Structural characterisation of novel exopolysaccharide biosynthesized by potential probiotic strain Lactobacillus fermentum D12

    Lactobacillus fermentum D12, biosynthesize exopolysaccharides, is released in large amounts in MRS broth supplemented with glucose. High Performance Size Exclusion Chromatography (HPSEC), 1H-NMR, GC and GC-MS analysis revealed that this strain produces three different types of EPOLs; the first homopolysaccharide (HoPOL) of a molecular weight of 400 kDa and two different low molecular weight heteropolysaccharides (HePOLs) of less than 2 kDa. 2D-NMR spectroscopy analysis revealed that HoEPOL, with the highest molecular mass, is composed of repeating units of D-glucose linked by an α-1,4-glycosidic bond, where 20% of the glucose subunits is acetylated at C-3. Further chromatographic analyses and NMR experiments showed that each HePOL contained mannose, glucose and galactose in an averaged relative molar ratio of 1.78:0.87:1 and 6.38:1.6:1, respectively. Since a probiotic strain survival in rigorous gastrointestinal (GI) conditions is the first probiotic selection criterion to be met, and with respect to efficient survival of D12 strain in GIT in vitro (bacteria counts ≥106 CFU ml-1) the potential probiotic role of Lb. fermentum D12 was evaluated. Also, sensitivity to different antibiotics, minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), antagonistic activity and analysis of fermentation of different carbohydrates using API 50 CHL media of this potential probiotic strain was assessed

    Characterization of S-layer proteins of potential probiotic starter culture Lactobacillus brevis SF9B isolated from sauerkraut

    Abstract S-layers represent the simplest biological membranes developed during the evolution and are one of the most abundant biopolymers on Earth. Current fundamental and applied research aim to reveal the chemical structure, morphogenesis and function of S-layer proteins (Slps). This is the first paper that describes the Slps of certain Lactobacillus brevis strain isolated from sauerkraut. The whole genome sequence (WGS) analysis of the L. brevis SF9B strain uncovered three genes encoding the putative Slps, but merely one, identified as similar to the SlpB of L. brevis ATCC 14869, was expressed. Slp-expressing SF9B cells exhibited increased survival in simulated gastrointestinal (GI) conditions and during freeze-drying. Their survival in stress conditions was additionally enhanced by microencapsulation, especially when using alginate with gelatine as a matrix. Thus prepared cells were subjected to simulated GI conditions and their mortality was only 0.28 ± 0.45 log CFU/mL. Furthermore, a correlation between the high surface hydrophobicity and the remarkable aggregative capacity of SF9B strain was established. The results indicate a prominent role of Slps in adhesion to mucin, extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, and particularly to Caco-2 cells, where the removal of Slps utterly abolished the adhesiveness of SF9B cells for 7.78 ± 0.25 log CFU/mL.Peer reviewe

    Filozofska fakulteta Univerze v Ljubljani in Komisija za slovenski jezik v javnosti pri Slovenski akademiji znanosti in umetnosti sta v torek, 23. oktobra 2018, organizirali okroglo mizo »Jezik in spol«, ki je potekala na Filozofski fakulteti v Ljubljani. Izhodišče razprave je bil sklep Senata Filozofske fakultete o izmenični rabi moške in ženske slovnične oblike za vse spole v pravilnikih Filozofske fakultete, s sogovornicami in sogovorniki pa sta organizatorja želela razpravo razširiti na vprašanja, kakšne možnosti ponuja slovenski jezik za uporabo spolno občutljivega jezika in kako v slovenskem jeziku zagotavljati vključujoč jezik v različnih družbenih situacijah.
