    Doppler Frequency Effect on Network Throughput Using Transmit Diversity

    In this paper, the effect of Doppler shifts on the downlink channel of the Long Term Evolution network is investigated at different frequencies using a new simulation setup. To this aim, an integrated simulation setup has been developed, which includes a cellular environment with a Bernoulli signal generator, a propagation channel with Rayleigh flat fading using four transmit antennas, and two receive antennas. Among the simulation results, the bit error rate of the transmit diversity scheme is analyzed. It is shown that an increase in antenna transmit power provides higher throughput although yields to a higher number of errors

    Contribution in the Physical Characterization of Two River Sands from the South-mifi River of the Mifi Basin in Cameroon

    The valorization and the use of natural resources as building materials require a meticulous study of its geotechnical properties. Thus the goal of our research is the physical characterization of two river sands from the south-Mifi river of the Mifi basin carried out with an aim of promoting its rational use in Civil Engineering constructions. After the fieldwork, laboratory studies have concerned the petrography, the physical identification of the Sands samples such as: water content, unit weight, density, sand equivalent, granulometrical analysis, sedimentation, and granularity. The study concludes that the representative samples of the analyzed aggregates have geometrical and physical properties which differed from the upper side of the South-Mifi River to the lower side of the river. From the upper side, the specific mass is 2.85 g/cm3 and to the lower side between 25 and 35 km the specific mass is 2.61 g/cm3, there is a variation of 8.42 %. The sand equivalent from the upper side is 76.4 % and to the lower side 70.5 %. The fineness modulus to the upper side is 3 and to the lower side 2. 8.

    An effective organic waste recycling through vermicomposting technology for sustainable agriculture in tropics

    peer reviewedPurpose The management of household wastes has been a real challenge for the capital city of Cameroon for some years now. In order to adopt ecological and sustainable strategies for better management of organic fraction of solid wastes, the present work was aimed to propose a sustainable alternative for the recycling of household organic waste through a vermicomposting process. Method A vermicomposting of household organic waste was carried out during 46 days, preceded by 23 days of pre-composting. Then, three treatments were established by mixing epigeic earthworms with different proportion of pre-composted waste. Maturation parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), C/N ratio, ammonium (N-NH4+ ) and total organic matter (TOM) were monitored about four weeks. The agronomic quality of the vermicompost was also determined at the end. Results During pre-composting, the temperature reached a maximum of 54.3±5.4°C suitable for the elimination of potential pathogen. The pH varied between 9.44 and 8.53 leading towards neutrality at the end of the vermi-composting process. The obtained mean values of C/N ratio and the TOM were respectively 11.04-11.68 and 25.82-27.19% in line with the AFNOR (NFU 44-051) guideline. The obtained vermicompost revealed high levels of nutrients such as N, P, K, Ca and Mg. The phytotoxicity test on lettuce showed germination rates above 50%, revealing the non-toxic nature of the vermicompost produced. Conclusion The vermicompost were rich in nutrients and exhibited the non-phytotoxicity. Thus, vermicomposting can be applied in the context of Cameroon to transform organic waste into organic fertiliser suitable for sustainable agriculture

    Prevalence of asthma and allergic rhinitis among adults in Yaounde, Cameroon

    BACKGROUND: Population-based estimates of asthma and allergic rhinitis in sub-Saharan African adults are lacking. We assessed the prevalence and determinants of asthma and allergic rhinitis in urban adult Cameroonians. METHODS: A community-based survey was conducted from December 2013 to April 2014 among adults aged 19 years and above (N = 2,304, 57.3% women), selected through multilevel stratified random sampling across all districts of Yaounde (Capital city). Internationally validated questionnaires were used to investigate the presence of allergic diseases. Logistic regressions were employed to investigate the determinants of allergic conditions. RESULTS: Prevalence rates were 2.7% (95% CI: 2.1-3.4) for asthma-ever, 6.9% (5.9-7.9) for lifetime wheezing, 2.9% (92.2-3.6) for current wheezing and 11.4% (10.1-12.7) for self-reported lifetime allergic rhinitis; while 240 (10.4%) participants reported current symptoms of allergic rhinitis, and 125 (5.4%) had allergic rhino-conjunctivitis. The prevalence of current asthma medication use and self-reported asthma attack was 0.8 (0.4-1.2) and 1 (0.6-1.4) respectively. Multivariable adjusted determinants of current wheezing were signs of atopic eczema [2.91 (1.09-7.74)] and signs of allergic rhinitis [3.24 (1.83-5.71)]. Age group 31-40 years [0.27(0.09-0.78), p = 0.016] was an independent protective factor for wheezing. Determinants of current rhinitis symptoms were active smoking [2.20 (1.37-3.54), p<0.001], signs of atopic eczema [2.84 (1.48-5.46)] and current wheezing [3.02 (1.70-5.39)]. CONCLUSION: Prevalence rates for asthma and allergic rhinitis among adults in this population were at the lower tails of those reported in other regions of the world. Beside the classical interrelation between allergic diseases found in this study, active smoking was an independent determinant of allergic rhinitis symptoms. Nationwide surveys are needed to investigate regional variations

    Red blood cell complement receptor one level varies with Knops blood group, α(+)thalassaemia and age among Kenyan children

    Both the invasion of red blood cells (RBCs) by Plasmodium falciparum parasites and the sequestration of parasite-infected RBCs in the microvasculature are mediated in part by complement receptor one (CR1). RBC surface CR1 level can vary between individuals by more than 20-fold and may be associated with the risk of severe malaria. The factors that influence RBC CR1 level variation are poorly understood, particularly in African populations. We studied 3535 child residents of a malaria-endemic region of coastal Kenya and report, for the first time, that the CR1 Knops blood group alleles Sl2 and McC(b), and homozygous HbSS are positively associated with RBC CR1 level. Sickle cell trait and ABO blood group did not influence RBC CR1 level. We also confirm the previous observation that α(+)thalassaemia is associated with reduced RBC CR1 level, possibly due to small RBC volume, and that age-related changes in RBC CR1 expression occur throughout childhood. RBC CR1 level in malaria-endemic African populations is a complex phenotype influenced by multiple factors that should be taken into account in the design and interpretation of future studies on CR1 and malaria susceptibility

    La fixation biologique d’azote (réduction du N2 atmosphérique, non biodisponible, en ammonium (NH3) bioassimilable) est catalysée par la métalloenzyme nitrogénase. Cette enzyme existe sous trois isoformes chez la bactérie du sol Azotobacter vinelandii: les nitrogénases au molybdène (Mo), au vanadium (V) et au fer (Fe). L’acquisition des métaux cofacteurs constitue un paramètre d’intérêt majeur car Mo et V sont fortement complexés à la matrice (matière organique et oxydes) ce qui peut limiter leur disponibilité. Ces travaux ont montré que la présence d’acide tannique et d’oxydes de fer entraîne des changements majeurs dans la gestion des métaux cofacteurs (Mo et V) chez A. vinelandii. Les stratégies d’acquisition des métaux cofacteurs sont fortement modifiées en présence de ces complexants avec (i) un changement important de la quantité des metallophores produits ainsi que (ii) une acquisition simultanée de Mo et V dans des conditions traditionnellement considérées comme non limitantes en Mo. Ceci se traduit par un changement important dans l’utilisation des nitrogénases; les niveaux de transcrits élevés des gènes nifD et vnfD, spécifiques des nitrogénases au Mo et au V respectivement, suggèrent une utilisation simultanée de ces isoenzymes pour assurer la fixation d’azote. Ce projet a permis de mettre en évidence que face à un stress métallique, l’utilisation des isoformes de la nitrogénase par A. vinelandii est un processus plus versatile que précédemment décrit et que le coût d’acquisition des métaux dans ces conditions constitue un facteur important de la régulation de l’activité des nitrogénases. Ceci suggère que les nitrogénases alternatives pourraient contribuer à la fixation d’azote de manière plus importante que présentement admis
