Duration Measures for Corporate Project Valuation

    Get PDF
Sensitivity analysis is a very common exercise performed with the forecasting of project cash flows. In this paper, a duration-type measure is generated that provides a single number for the assessment of project cash flows relative to changes in the discount rate (or adjusted for changes in a particular cash flow model parameter). The calculation is no more difficult than the duration measures that already exist for bonds. Yet, the calculation provides valuable insight that many times is lost when performing sensitivity analysis. Further, at a minimum, the measure provides a gauge for the consequences of mis-specifiying the discount rate for a project

Improving Pro Forma Analysis through Better Terminal Value Estimates

    Get PDF
Basic pro forma analysis often estimates the terminal value input using a simple growing perpetuity assumption. While this assumption is easy to implement, it potentially creates an upward bias in some inputs leading to lower firm or project value outputs. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a more accurate way to estimate the terminal value input. Further, by allowing for multiple sales growth rates and by not restricting other input variables to necessarily grow at these same rates, a more accurate, flexible, compact, and thorough analysis is possible

Are Cover Stories Effective Contrarian Indicators?

    Get PDF
Headlines from cover stories are collected over a twenty year period from Business Week, Fortune, and Forbes to determine if positive stories are associated with superior future performance and if negative stories are associated with inferior future performance for the featured firm (when compared to an index or to another firm within the same industry and of the same size). Statistical testing implies that positive stories generally indicate the end of superior performance and negative news generally indicates the end of poor performance

Equipment preferences of men and women employed in early childhood education

    Get PDF
During the last four decades early childhood educators have stressed the importance of male workers entering the occupation. Claims have been made that both children and programs benefit from the presence of male caregivers. However, the actual percentage of men working with young children is very small and has not increased. While professionals have accepted, as a matter of faith, that the presence of male workers is beneficial, no empirical data support this claim. Research efforts have failed to document unique male contributions to the early childhood environment. The current study suggests that previous studies may have been measuring the wrong variables. The current study measured the different equipment and supply preferences of men and women working in the field of early childhood education. Participants were each given a booklet with 50 pictures of daycare equipment and supplies and requested to choose 15 items that they would like to use to supplement an already equipped classroom. A panel had previously rated these items on a 5 point scale from very feminine to very masculine. Participants were also requested to complete an education and experience survey as well as a Sex Role Preference scale

Phenotypic, genetic, and genome-wide structure in the metabolic syndrome

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Insulin resistance, obesity, dyslipidemia, and high blood pressure characterize the metabolic syndrome. In an effort to explore the utility of different multivariate methods of data reduction to better understand the genetic influences on the aggregation of metabolic syndrome phenotypes, we calculated phenotypic, genetic, and genome-wide LOD score correlation matrices using five traits (total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, systolic blood pressure, and body mass index) from the Framingham Heart Study data set prepared for the Genetic Analysis Workshop 13, clinic visits 10 and 1 for the original and offspring cohorts, respectively. We next applied factor analysis to summarize the relationship between these phenotypes. RESULTS: Factors generated from the genetic correlation matrix explained the most variation. Factors extracted using the other matrices followed a different pattern and suggest distinct effects. CONCLUSIONS: Given these results, different methods of multivariate data reduction may provide unique clues on the clustering of this complex syndrome
