Bengtson and Roberts (1991) viewed intergenerational family solidarity as a comprehensive construct consisting of six components of solidarity. Affectual, Associational, and Functional solidarities, can be adapted to a gambling context. The three family solidarity dimensions of affection, association, and function are the core components to family solidarity (Hogerbrugge & Komter, 2012)

    Severe Antiretroviral Therapy-Induced Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis in a Child

    Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare and life-threatening condition characterised by extensive epidermal detachment and mucosal erosion. Adverse drug reaction is a strongly correlated causative factor and TEN is currently considered the most severe end of a spectrum of drug-induced mucocutaneous diseases, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Attaining an accurate and detailed patient history is critical for identifying potential causative agents, which can prove challenging; particularly in cultures such as that of Malawi. TEN lacks definitive management and the use of immunomodulation, such as with corticosteroids and intravenous immunoglobulin, remains controversial. We report a fascinating case of TEN associated with antiretroviral therapy. A 10-year-old female was given a combination of antiretroviral drugs (lamivudine, nevirapine and stavudine) as postexposure prophylaxis, having been raped. The child subsequently developed TEN and presented to our remote hospital in Malawi, where she was treated entirely with supportive therapy. This is an excellent example of difficult disease management in a limited-resource setting and provides reassuring evidence to clinicians of similar circumstance.     Continued Development of a Global Heat Transfer Measurement System at AEDC Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel 9

    Heat transfer rates are an extremely important consideration in the design of hypersonic vehicles such as atmospheric reentry vehicles. This paper describes the development of a data reduction methodology to evaluate global heat transfer rates using surface temperature-time histories measured with the temperature sensitive paint (TSP) system at AEDC Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel 9. As a part of this development effort, a scale model of the NASA Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) was painted with TSP and multiple sequences of high resolution images were acquired during a five run test program. Heat transfer calculation from TSP data in Tunnel 9 is challenging due to relatively long run times, high Reynolds number environment and the desire to utilize typical stainless steel wind tunnel models used for force and moment testing. An approach to reduce TSP data into convective heat flux was developed, taking into consideration the conditions listed above. Surface temperatures from high quality quantitative global temperature maps acquired with the TSP system were then used as an input into the algorithm. Preliminary comparison of the heat flux calculated using the TSP surface temperature data with the value calculated using the standard thermocouple data is reported

    Interferometric Observations of the Nuclear Region of Arp220 at Submillimeter Wavelengths

    We report the first submillimeter interferometric observations of an ultraluminous infrared galaxy. We observed Arp220 in the CO J=3-2 line and 342GHz continuum with the single baseline CSO-JCMT interferometer consisting of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). Models were fit to the measured visibilities to constrain the structure of the source. The morphologies of the CO J=3-2 line and 342GHz continuum emission are similar to those seen in published maps at 230 and 110GHz. We clearly detect a binary source separated by about 1 arcsec in the east-west direction in the 342GHz continuum. The CO J=3-2 visibility amplitudes, however, indicate a more complicated structure, with evidence for a compact binary at some velocities and rather more extended structure at others. Less than 30% of the total CO J=3-2 emission is detected by the interferometer, which implies the presence of significant quantities of extended gas. We also obtained single-dish CO J=2-1, CO J=3-2 and HCN J=4-3 spectra. The HCN J=4-3 spectrum, unlike the CO spectra, is dominated by a single redshifted peak. The HCN J=4-3/CO J=3-2, HCN J=4-3/HCN J=1-0 and CO J=3-2/2-1 line ratios are larger in the redshifted (eastern) source, which suggests that the two sources may have different physical conditions. This result might be explained by the presence of an intense starburst that has begun to deplete or disperse the densest gas in the western source, while the eastern source harbors undispersed high density gas.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 4 Tables. accepted by Ap

    Pulmonary Dysfunction in Patients with Femoral Shaft Fracture Treated with Intramedullary Nailing

    Background: This study was undertaken to determine whether alveolar dead space increases during intramedullary nailing of femoral shaft fractures and whether alveolar dead space predicts postoperative pulmonary dysfunction in patients undergoing intramedullary nailing of a femoral shaft fracture. Methods: All patients with a femoral shaft fracture were prospectively enrolled in the study unless there was evidence of acute myocardial infarction, shock, or heart failure. Arterial blood gases were measured at three consecutive time-periods after induction of general anesthesia: before intramedullary nailing and ten and thirty minutes after intramedullary nailing. The end-tidal carbon-dioxide level, minute ventilation, positive end‐expiratory pressure, and percent of inspired and expired inhalation agent were recorded simultaneously with the blood-gas measurement. Postoperatively, all subjects were monitored for evidence of pulmonary dysfunction, defined as the need for mechanical ventilation or supplemental oxygen (at a fraction of inspired oxygen of >40%) in the presence of clinical signs of a respiratory rate of >20 breaths/min or the use of accessory muscles of respiration. Results: Seventy‐four patients with a total of eighty femoral shaft fractures completed the study. Fifty fractures (62.5%) underwent nailing after reaming, and thirty fractures (37.5%) underwent nailing with minimal or no reaming. The mean alveolar dead-space measurements before canal opening and at ten and thirty minutes after canal opening were 14.5%, 15.8%, and 15.2% in the total series of seventy‐four patients (general linear model, p = 0.2) and 20.5%, 22.7%, and 24.2% in the twenty patients with postoperative pulmonary dysfunction (general linear model, p = 0.05). Of the twenty‐one patients with an alveolar dead-space measurement of >20% thirty minutes after nailing, sixteen had postoperative pulmonary dysfunction. According to univariate and multivariate analysis, the alveolar dead-space measurement was strongly associated with postoperative pulmonary dysfunction. Conclusions: According to our data, intramedullary nailing of femoral shaft fractures did not significantly increase alveolar dead space, and the amount of alveolar dead space can predict which patients will have pulmonary dysfunction postoperatively

    MSLICE Sequencing is a graphical tool for writing sequences and integrating them into RML files, as well as for producing SCMF files for uplink. When operated in a testbed environment, it also supports uplinking these SCMF files to the testbed via Chill. This software features a free-form textural sequence editor featuring syntax coloring, automatic content assistance (including command and argument completion proposals), complete with types, value ranges, unites, and descriptions from the command dictionary that appear as they are typed. The sequence editor also has a "field mode" that allows tabbing between arguments and displays type/range/units/description for each argument as it is edited. Color-coded error and warning annotations on problematic tokens are included, as well as indications of problems that are not visible in the current scroll range. "Quick Fix" suggestions are made for resolving problems, and all the features afforded by modern source editors are also included such as copy/cut/paste, undo/redo, and a sophisticated find-and-replace system optionally using regular expressions. The software offers a full XML editor for RML files, which features syntax coloring, content assistance and problem annotations as above. There is a form-based, "detail view" that allows structured editing of command arguments and sequence parameters when preferred. The "project view" shows the user s "workspace" as a tree of "resources" (projects, folders, and files) that can subsequently be opened in editors by double-clicking. Files can be added, deleted, dragged-dropped/copied-pasted between folders or projects, and these operations are undoable and redoable. A "problems view" contains a tabular list of all problems in the current workspace. Double-clicking on any row in the table opens an editor for the appropriate sequence, scrolling to the specific line with the problem, and highlighting the problematic characters. From there, one can invoke "quick fix" as described above to resolve the issue. Once resolved, saving the file causes the problem to be removed from the problem view

Evidence from genetic and clinical studies suggests that there may be a causal association between prostate cancer and the human papilloma virus (HPV). As HPV is a vaccine-preventable pathogen, the possibility of a role in prostate cancer causation may reinforce the importance of effective HPV vaccination campaigns. This is of particular relevance in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have considerable effects on HPV vaccine uptake and distribution

    Targeting and Localization for Mars Rover Operations

    A design and a partially developed application framework were presented for improving localization and targeting for surface spacecraft. The program has value for the Mars Science Laboratory mission, and has been delivered to support the Mars Exploration Rovers as part of the latest version of the Maestro science planning tool. It also has applications for future missions involving either surface-based or low-altitude atmospheric robotic vehicles. The targeting and localization solutions solve the problem of how to integrate localization estimate updates into operational planning tools, operational data product generalizations, and flight software by adding expanded flexibility to flight software, the operations data product pipeline, and operations planning tools based on coordinate frame updates during a planning cycle
