    Systematic study of effect of cross-drafts and nozzle diameter on shield gas coverage

    A shield gas flow rate of 15–20 L min21 is typically specified in metal inert gas welding, but is often adjusted to as high as 36 L min21 by welders in practice. Not only is this overuse of shield gas wasteful, but uncontrolled high gas flows can lead to significant turbulence induced porosity in the final weld. There is therefore a need to understand and control the minimum shield gas flow rate used in practical welding where cross-drafts may affect the coverage. Very low gas coverage or no shielding leads to porosity and spatter development in the weld region. A systematic study is reported of the weld quality achieved for a range of shield gas flow rates, cross-draft speeds and nozzle diameters using optical visualisation and numerical modelling to determine the shield gas coverage. As a consequence of the study, the shield gas flow has been reduced to 12 L min21 in production welding, representing a significant process cost saving and reduced environmental impact with no compromise to the final weld quality

    MIG gas shielding : Economic savings without detriment to quality

    Over the years a number of claims have been made related to potential savings of the shielding gas used in the MIG process. A number of work streams have been set up to consider such areas from a technical and economic standpoint. The use of small helium additions has particular benefits and despite an increase in unit cost, the overriding benefits are achieved in reduced manhour cost. A similar situation has been established when using a high frequency process to switch shielding gases during welding. The outcome from this was very similar to that already described. Overlaid on these has been the increasing use of a technique that visualises actual gas flow during welding by the use of laser backlighting. Some preliminary work in this area is described particularly related to the effect of drafts on the gas distribution. A recent development on the market place is a piece of equipment, which regulates the gas flow automatically and synchronously with the welding current. Gas savings in the region of 50-60% have been obtained. Data has been produced to illustrate these benefits. The potential benefit of developing a computational fluid dynamic model of the gas flow is also described, and early development stages of the model shown. However, there will always exist the very basic management need to minimise leaks from the gas delivery systems

    Negotiating the coaching landscape: Experiences of Black men and women coaches in the United Kingdom

    The current article provides a critical examination of the racialised and gendered processes that reinforce disparities in sport coaching by exploring the experiences of Black men and women coaches in the United Kingdom. The findings are based on in-depth qualitative interviews with coaches from two national governing bodies of sport. Using a Critical Race Theory approach and Black feminist lens, the coaches’ narratives illuminate the complex, multifaceted and dynamic ways in which ‘race’, ethnicity and gender are experienced and negotiated by sport coaches. The coaches’ reflections are discussed under three themes: negotiating identities; privilege and blind spots; and systemic discrimination. The narratives from the coaches’ experiences emphasise the need for key stakeholders in sport to recognise the intersectional, structural and relational experiences that facilitate, as well as constrain, the progression of Black coaches in order to challenge racialised and gendered inequalities

    Investigation of the Liverpool Bay mixing front using POLCOMS

    Liverpool Bay, northwest UK, is a region of freshwater influence and hypertidal conditions. The river inflow from the 3 large estuary systems (Dee, Mersey and Ribble) forms a coastal front that moves < 10 km in response to semi-diurnal tidal straining and < 35 km due to the spring-neap cycle. The time variability of the density gradients in this coastal region are mainly controlled by salinity. Coastal observations are used in this study to improve the numerical simulation of the exchange process occurring at this front through improved spatial structure and temporal variability. A decade of Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) sensor observations were collected during cruises across a nearshore grid of monitoring stations. These data are used in addition to fixed mooring data that are near-continuous in time to validate numerical simulations using the 1-way nested Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System (POLCOMS) at ~1.8km and 180m horizontal resolution. A downscaled simulation is used to investigate the influence of model resolution, inclusion of wetting and drying, diffusivity, turbulence advection and the influence of model boundary and initial conditions for select cruise periods in 2008. This year is chosen as a typical year with periods of calm and stormy conditions with variable river influence to investigate the seasonal frontal structure.     Prospective study of psychological morbidity and illness perceptions in young people with inflammatory bowel disease

    Background and Aims: Psychological morbidity is increased in young people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Illness perceptions may be an important factor. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and severity of psychological morbidity and examine relationships between baseline illness perceptions and anxiety, depression and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) at baseline and 12-months later in 16-21-years olds with IBD. Methods: IBD patients (n = 121) completed measures of anxiety, depression, HRQoL, and illness perceptions (IPQ-R) at baseline and follow-up (n = 100, 83%). Results: mong the 121 patients at baseline (median age 19.3 years, 40% female, 62% Crohn's disease, 73% in clinical remission), 55% reported elevated symptoms of anxiety/depression and 83% low HRQoL. Negative illness perceptions at baseline were significantly correlated with greater anxiety, depression and lower HRQoL at baseline and follow-up. In regression analysis at baseline, IPQ-R domain of greater perception of a cyclical nature of IBD was an independent predictor of anxiety, whilst a greater perceived emotional impact of IBD was an independent predictor of anxiety, depression and HRQoL. Female gender and clinical relapse were also independent predictors of lower HRQoL. After controlling for baseline measures, clinical risk factors and illness perceptions did not explain additional variance in psychological morbidity at follow-up. Conclusion: A high prevalence of psychological morbidity, stable over one year, was demonstrated in young people with IBD. Having negative illness perceptions, being female and active disease predicted those at greatest risk of psychological morbidity. Illness perceptions may be an appropriate target for psychological interventions

    A new microbothriid monogenean Dermopristis pterophilus n. sp. from the skin of the Critically Endangered green sawfish Pristis zijsron Bleeker, 1851 (Batoidea: Pristidae) in Western Australia

    A new microbothriid monogenean Dermopristis pterophilus n. sp. is described from the skin of the Critically Endangered green sawfish Pristis zijsron Bleeker, 1851 in the Ashburton River delta, northern Western Australia. Analyses of the 28S ribosomal DNA marker and the molecular barcoding markers Histone 3 and Elongation Factor 1 α confirmed position among the Microbothriidae, with close affinity to the only other sequenced representative of Dermopristis Kearn, Whittington and Evans-Groing, 2010. The new species is morphologically consistent with the concept of Dermopristis; it has two testes, lacks a male copulatory organ and has a simple haptor. It is smaller than its two congeners D. paradoxus Kearn, Whittington and Evans-Gowing, 2010 and D. cairae Whittington and Kearn, 2011 and is most similar to the former, distinguished only in that it lacks the strong, transverse, parallel ridges on the ventral body surface that characterise that species. It is more easily distinguished from D. cairae, differing in body shape, possession of a seminal receptacle, and relative position and size of the haptor. It may further differ from both species by fine details of the gut diverticula, although these details are difficult to ascertain. Spermatophores were observed in the new species, similar to those previously reported for D. cairae. The new species exhibits site attachment preference: infections were greatest on and immediately adjacent to the host pelvic fins (including male reproductive organs, i.e. claspers), moderate in proximity to the dorsal and pectoral fins, few on the caudal fin and peduncle, and infrequently, isolated worms occurred elsewhere on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the body. There was no incidence of infection on the head (including rostrum). We presume D. pterophilus is restricted to P. zijsron and thus likely faces the same threat of extinction

    Condensation energy in strongly coupled superconductors

    We consider the condensation energy in superconductors where the pairing is electronic in origin and is mediated by a collective bosonic mode. We use magnetically-mediated superconductivity as an example, and show that for large spin-fermion couplings, the physics is qualitatively different from the BCS theory as the condensation energy results from the feedback on spin excitations, while the electronic contribution to the condensation energy is positive due to an ``undressing'' feedback on the fermions. The same feedback effect accounts for the gain of the kinetic energy at strong couplings.Comment: 4 pages, revtex 4, 3 eps figure
