The aim of this research is to characterize the physical elements which shape the street character in Malaysia using the traditional street as a case study. As streets are essential public open space of a city, designing a good street is important to produce a street with great character in the city. Due to rapid urbanization, many streets are designed to meet the needs of vehicular movement. As such it reduces the functionality of the street as a place or social arena. For instance, the design of new building does not respond towards the existing context, as well as the development that interfere with local activities. To overcome this, it is worthwhile to refer to the unique quality of traditional street design as one approach to improve the street characteristic as it presents a place with local character and values. Three streets in the Melaka Historical City Centre were chosen, namely, Tukang Besi Street, Tukang Emas Street and Tokong Street for this study because the character can be used as a model for new street design. Data were gathered from mixed-methods approach. The qualitative data collections involves in-depth interview and mind mapping from user perception (n=21), in-depth interview from professional perception, field observation and document review of historical data. The data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Subsequently, quantitative data collection involving questionnaire survey (n=330) were carried out and analyzed statistically. The concluding result was determined through triangulation of all data and subsequently to relate with the established theories. The findings indicate that the uniqueness of traditional street can be characterized into three components, namely, building, landscape and street pattern where each component encompasses its own appearance and function. These unique components of traditional street character can be useful as a guide for a new street design that meets the needs of local character. Finding of this research could assist urban designers, architects and policy makers in designing new streets as public realm in Malaysia context

    Get PDF
In ensuring competitiveness and employability, architectural graduates nowadays have been observed to acquire new skills to complement their conventional architectural trainings. The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the hard and soft skills acquired by the architectural students via the architectural design project requirements, which is also categorized as project-based learning. The study utilizes mixed-mode methods through questionnaire survey and in-depth interview. As this is a preliminary study, the number of respondents for the survey is 32, while for the in-depth interview, only eight students have participated. From the findings, it can be concluded that skills such as video presentation (hard skill), teamwork and communication skills (soft skill) are essential for architecture students undertaking project-based learning. The findings of this study will be used to benefit investigations in student’s skill developments in project-based learning with larger number of respondents. It is hoped that the findings will be adopted into the architectural education field to better equip future graduate architects with skills which are necessary for the industry

This article articulates a framework suitable to use when making a decision about student seating arrangement in the classroom at school level as a research aim. The decision makers should establish what are the potential types of seating arrangement? Then evaluate them in terms of its contribution, significance, and impact to the student learning development. The problem of a seating arrangement is usually related to the seating student position selection that is usually decided by teachers or students that can freely choose their own seating. There are three (3) objectives covered in this article; objective 1: to justify the main factors influencing classroom seating arrangement at school building, objective 2: to identify the common patterns of seating arrangement applied for school level and objective 3; to determine the best practice of seating arrangement for 21st century classroom approach at school building. The article articulates a theory of seating arrangement in reference to five (5) common forms of seat arrangement, namely Traditional (columns and rows), Cluster, U-shaped, Stadium, and Runaway. The performance of students might drop especially weak students who are sitting at the back of the classroom if the students are not judiciously arranged. Thus, seating arrangements should be set properly to ensure optimal quality of learning in a classroom. The technique of comparative analysis was used in this study. The findings had shown that cluster seating arrangement is relevant with the 21st century learning approach, which provides more availability of collaborative learning, where it contributes to student-centred learning in a classroom

The objective of this paper is to determine the landscape features that contribute towards the character of the traditional street environment. The case study was conducted at three streets in Melaka, namely; Tukang Besi Street, Tukang Emas Street and Tokong Street. Mixed methods were used in this study which involved visual survey, direct observation of behaviour, user perception (questionnaires, in-depth interview and mental mapping) and an in-depth interview with policy makers. The result shows that landscape features can be characterized into two main categories, namely physical appearance and function

In a rapid urbanization, there are characters of traditional streets in old towns that still attract visitors until today. This type of street creates a sense of place or “genious loci” with a unique setting. Apart from this, the goal of this research is to determine the element(s) of traditional street in Malaysia that attracts visitors from a user point of perception. The objective of this research is to identify and investigate the element(s) that have been mentioned by users in attracting them to the street. Mix methodologies were used, namely the qualitative method as a major approach and followed by quantitative method as a supporting data. In-depth interviews, photo recognitions and observations were the techniques applied for qualitative data. 21 respondents (users) were selected for the study conducte

Anthropometry and ergonomic are the basic knowledge of design in the process of creating a functional and innovative humanistic products. The purpose of this study was to assess the nderstanding of the aspects of anthropometry and ergonomic as a fundamental knowledge of design among the first year UKM architecture students. This measure was administrated with 23 students (9 males, 14 females) on their final design project for KKSB 1116 (Architectural Design 1) course. Measurements were conducted through comparison of their understanding on both the basic knowledge of theory and its application in their shelter design. Results indicated that there were significant differences in pre- and post-test of their understanding regardless of their former educational background. Series of interventions in the learning processes boosted the level of understanding of the students. At the end of the design project, all students generally showed a high level of understanding in both aspects and achieved the course’s outcomes (COs)
