Direct Reactions with Exotic Nuclei, Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics
Intermediate energy Coulomb excitation and dissociation is a useful tool for
nuclear structure and astrophysics studies. Low-lying strength in nuclei far
from stability was discovered by this method. The effective range theory for
low-lying strength in one-neutron halo nuclei is summarized and extended to
two-neutron halo nuclei. This is of special interest in view of recent rather
accurate experimental results on the low-lying electric dipole strength in
Li. Another indirect approach to nuclear astrophysics is the Trojan
horse method. It is pointed out that it is a suitable tool to investigate
subthreshold resonances.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of the Erice School on 'Radioactive

Successful control of an outbreak of colonization by Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing K.\ua0pneumoniae sequence type 258 in a neonatal intensive care unit, Italy
This article reports an outbreak of colonization by Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) sequence type (ST) 258 in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Palermo, Italy. KPC-Kp ST258 was detected by an active surveillance culture programme. Between 18th September and 14th November 2012, KPC-Kp was isolated from 10 out of 54 neonates admitted in the outbreak period. No cases of infection were recorded. Male sex was associated with colonization, whereas administration of ampicilline-sulbactam plus gentamicin was protective. Infection control interventions interrupted the spread of KPC-Kp without the need to close the NICU to new admissions. (C) 2013 The Healthcare Infection Society. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Time Scales in Spectator Fragmentation
Proton-proton correlations and correlations of p-alpha, d-alpha, and t-alpha
from spectator decays following Au + Au collisions at 1000 AMeV have been
measured with an highly efficient detector hodoscope. The constructed
correlation functions indicate a moderate expansion and low breakup densities
similar to assumptions made in statistical multifragmentation models. In
agreement with a volume breakup rather short time scales were deduced employing
directional cuts in proton-proton correlations.

Thermal and Chemical Freeze-out in Spectator Fragmentation
Isotope temperatures from double ratios of hydrogen, helium, lithium,
beryllium, and carbon isotopic yields, and excited-state temperatures from
yield ratios of particle-unstable resonances in 4He, 5Li, and 8Be, were
determined for spectator fragmentation, following collisions of 197Au with
targets ranging from C to Au at incident energies of 600 and 1000 MeV per
nucleon. A deviation of the isotopic from the excited-state temperatures is
observed which coincides with the transition from residue formation to
multi-fragment production, suggesting a chemical freeze-out prior to thermal
freeze-out in bulk disintegrations.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. C, small changes as

Breakup Density in Spectator Fragmentation
Proton-proton correlations and correlations of protons, deuterons and tritons
with alpha particles from spectator decays following 197Au + 197Au collisions
at 1000 MeV per nucleon have been measured with two highly efficient detector
hodoscopes. The constructed correlation functions, interpreted within the
approximation of a simultaneous volume decay, indicate a moderate expansion and
low breakup densities, similar to assumptions made in statistical
multifragmentation models.

\b{eta}-delayed three-proton decay of 31Ar
The beta decay of 31Ar, produced by fragmentation of a 36Ar beam at 880
MeV/nucleon, was investigated. Identified ions of 31Ar were stopped in a
gaseous time projection chamber with optical readout allowing to record decay
events with emission of protons. In addition to \b{eta}-delayed emission of one
and two protons we have clearly observed the beta-delayed three-proton branch.
The branching ratio for this channel in 31Ar is found to be 0.07(2)%.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Rev.
Temperatures of Exploding Nuclei
Breakup temperatures in central collisions of 197Au + 197Au at bombarding
energies E/A = 50 to 200 MeV were determined with two methods. Isotope
temperatures, deduced from double ratios of hydrogen, helium, and lithium
isotopic yields, increase monotonically with bombarding energy from 5 MeV to 12
MeV, in qualitative agreement with a scenario of chemical freeze-out after
adiabatic expansion. Excited-state temperatures, derived from yield ratios of
states in 4He, 5Li, 6Li, and 8Be, are about 5 MeV, independent of the
projectile energy, and seem to reflect the internal temperature of fragments at
their final separation from the system.
