    Noise-assisted Thouless pump in elastically deformable molecular junctions

    We study a Thouless pump realized with an elastically \textit{deformable quantum dot} whose center of mass follows a non-linear stochastic dynamics. The interplay of noise, non-linear effects, dissipation and interaction with an external time-dependent driving on the pumped charge is fully analyzed. The results show that the quantum pumping mechanism not only is not destroyed by the force fluctuations, but it becomes stronger when the forcing signal frequency is tuned close to the resonance of the vibrational mode. The robustness of the quantum pump with temperature is also investigated and an exponential decay of the pumped charge is found when the coupling to the vibrational mode is present.     Technical and Economic Perspective for Repowering of Micro Hydro Power Plants: a Case Study of an Early XX Century Power Plant

    AbstractNowadays many countries have dramatically cut the incentives for solar photovoltaic and wind farms; consequently many new investors and entrepreneurs pay more attention to small and mini hydro power plants. Hydropower currently respect to other renewable sources has not negligible benefits as lower cost of installation to equal installed capacity, higher reliability, higher energy production and more intensity and consistency over time. Many aspects as well as the sensibility to environmental issues related to civil works and the introduction of incentives for the production of renewable energy from small plants (< 1 MW) drive the attention to small Hydro Power Plants (HPPs). The thousands of historic mills, water wheels, inoperative hydropower stations or unrealized potential offer an interesting opportunity for small and micro hydropower generation.This article evaluates technical and economic feasibility of the repowering of one of the oldest Sicilian hydro power plant currently abandoned and disused. The reactivation of the Catarrate hydropower plant allows producing energy from renewable source contributing to the energy independence of the local community, with an energy yearly production of about 220 MW. Moreover, this study demonstrates the attractiveness of small hydropower as a local investment vehicle and at same time an occasion to preserve the historical industrial heritage of disused hydro plants

    A geographic information method for managing urban energy use

    This paper presents a geographical information method to support urban-level energy policies. It proposes using a geographical information system to store, display, edit, share and analyse geographical information for territorial decision-making. The method was used to help develop a sustainable energy action plan for the municipality of Randazzo in Sicily, Italy, by providing an accurate representation of actual energy consumption. Based on this case study, the use of a geographical information system appears to be a suitable support tool for both developing and managing sustainable energy action plans, regardless of the geographical area or context. This method will help municipalities estimate and monitor the energy consumption of residential, commercial and industrial buildings and, by taking into account the approaches of different stakeholders, help develop more accurate models for reducing urban carbon dioxide emissions

    Development of an Equilibrium-based Model of Gasification of Biomass by Aspen Plus

    Abstract Agricultural and forestry residues are usually processed as wastes; otherwise, they can be recovered to produce electrical and thermal energy through processes of thermochemical conversion, such us torrefaction, pyrolysis and gasification. Currently, the gasification of residual biomass for producing neutral CO 2 fuel for energy production is in development stage. In this context, this study proposes anequilibrium-based model, developed by the commercial software Aspen Plus, of a co-current gasifier fueled with agriculture residual, which allows estimating the chemical composition and theheating value of the syngas produced. The prediction of such model includes the main gaseous species, the yields of char and tar and describes the gasification process through the mass and energy balances, the water-gas shift (WGS) and the methanation reaction. The model validation was carried out through the comparison with experimental data, concerning two biomass with different moisture content and different gasification conditions, for sixteen cases compared. Overall, the comparison between the results of the simulations and the experimental data have shown a good agreement

    Deploy Energy-efficient Technologies in the Restoration of a Traditional Building in the Historical Center of Catania (Italy)☆

    Abstract The policy about energy efficiency of buildings, including minimum energy requirements and energy performance certificate (EPC), have to be also applied to existing buildings in the case of energy retrofit. In this paper, the possible strategies that can be used to reduce the energy needs of traditional massive buildings, that are widespread in the old town of the Mediterranean cities, have been investigated. To this aim, this study evaluates the energy consumption of a massive building placed in Catania city, called "La Casa del Portuale", which was recently refurbished with the aim to host two local administrative centers. The energy needs of this building was evaluated through computer simulation both in the heating and cooling period, on a yearly basis. The activities research were developed analyzing different refurbishment solutions suitable to improve the thermal performance of most traditional buildings without adversely affecting their fabric and character. Therefore, the feasibility comparison has been performed between the examined refurbishment solutions. The results of the proposed research, considering the diffusion of this typology of buildings, could be assumed as reference to a significant portion of the traditional real estate

    he second phase of the virus Covid-19 is about to start a new configuration of accessibility to activities and cities. This phase, which will be able to see different restriction levels both between different countries and between successive periods, is the great challenge that the whole world is facing and which, if not managed in a planned and strategic way, risks turning into a further catastrophe. The social distancing rules imposed will necessarily lead to an escape from public transport in the cities, which could turn into total congestion of city traffic, leading the cities themselves to paralysis. We need a series of countermeasures that define new mobility capable of mitigating the effects of the mobility offer imbalance by intervening quickly, economically, and, in the short term, emergency on the whole transport chain. This article presents some possible actions to be put in place, and some mobility measures actually applied in Tuscany coastal area. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG
