    Granular components of cement: Influence of mixture composition

    Raw granular materials used in cement manufacturing are limestone grains displaying a broad size distribution, ranging from microns to a couple of inches. They are stored as pyramidal heaps and, although empirical homogenization techniques are used with good results, there are important factors like segregation and grinding conditions that produce mixtures with different poorly controlled size. For this reason, the stability of the heaps strongly depends on these factors and it is important to study the influence of the respective amounts of particles of different sizes on the properties of the mixture. In this work, we report experiments analyzing the relationship between the characteristic angles of equilibrium of the heaps and the geometry, size and chemical composition of the grains. We also look for correlations between the values of the characteristic angles and the relative amounts of grains of different sizes that make up the materials. We demonstrate that the chemical composition is correlated with the geometry of the grains and that their aspect ratio does not influence the critical angles. We also show that the critical angles mostly depend on the relative amount of fine grains in the granular mixture and on the dispersion of the sizes. The results obtained allow one to draw conclusions that may be relevant to the treatment and storage of raw materials in the cement industry.Fil: Vidales, Ana Maria.     Collagen obtaining for 3D printing to create biological substitutes for biomedical applications

    Los andamios biodegradables con estructura tridimensional porosa son la base para la regeneración tisular, siendo componentes fundamentales para la ingeniería de tejidos; sobre ellos se realizan cultivos celulares para producir sustitutos biológicos que restauren o reparen daños en tejidos u órgano. El colágeno es el principal constituyente proteico de la matriz extracelular humana y posee una estructura que favorece la unión, migración y en ciertos casos la diferenciación de las células, siendo uno de los materiales más estudiados para el desarrollo de andamios. Sin embargo, su uso para fabricar estructuras tridimensionales con porosidad controlada, diseñadas para permitir la adhesión y migración de células en su interior y una difusión de oxígeno y nutrientes adecuada, ha sido limitado debido a su difícil procesabilidad mediante tecnologías de construcción capa por capa. En el presente trabajo se propone la impresión tridimensional de andamios de colágeno altamente porosos para uso biomédico. Para ello se desarrolla un método sencillo y relativamente económico para la purificación de colágeno tipo I de piel porcina a partir de tratamientos con soluciones ácidas y sales, que preservan la estructura de las fibras a diferencia de procedimientos enzimáticos normalmente usados, que desnaturalizan la proteína. El proceso llevado a cabo permitió la purificación, caracterización y cuantificación del colágeno mediante espectrofotometría y electroforesis desnaturalizante; y a través de un estudio reométrico se analizó su viscosidad. Con el colágeno se preparó una biotinta que permitió una extrusión homogénea por la bioimpresora y presentó viscosidad y estabilidad suficientes para la impresión de andamios tridimensionales. Se hizo una caracterización mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido, ensayos de hinchamiento de agua, porosidad y difracción de rayos X; además se comprobó la citocompatibilidad mediante un ensayo de citotoxicidad sugerido por Norma ISO 10993, parte 5-2009, y se realizaron cultivos celulares sobre los andamios para analizar el crecimiento y migración de las células en los mismos.Biodegradable scaffolds with three-dimensional porous structure are fundamental components for tissue engineering, on which cell cultures are grown to create biological substitutes that restore or repair tissue or organ damage. Collagen is the main protein of the human extracellular matrix, its structure allows the union, migration and in several cases, cell differentiation; leading it to be one of the most studied material for the development of biomedical scaffolds. However, its use to fabricate reproducible and pore-structure-controlled 3D structures, which are designed to stimulate cell adhesion and subsequent migration, and the easy diffusion of nutrients, has been limited due to its low processability by the means of layer-bylayer technologies. In the present, we propose three-dimensional impression for obtaining highly porous collagen scaffolds for biomedical use. A simple and economical method is developed for collagen purification starting from porcine skin through treatments with acidic and salt solutions, which preserve the structure of the fibers unlike normally used enzymatic procedures which denature the protein. Characterization and quantification through spectrophotometry and denaturing electrophoresis allowed to verify the effectiveness of this method for obtaining highly pure type I collagen; and rheometric studies indicated the viscosity of the material was suitable for 3D printing applications. A collagen bioink was prepared, which presented appropriated viscosity and stability for printing complex-structured 3D scaffolds with an extrusion bioprinter. A physical characterization of the printed scaffolds was performed through porosity and water swelling assays and cytocompatibility according to the ISO Standard 10993, part 5-2009, indicating that they aren’t cytotoxic, as it is show in this work.     Supporting central nervous system neuroprotection and remyelination by specific TLR4 antagonism

    ApTOLL is an aptamer specifically designed to antagonize toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which is involved in the innate immunity that promotes inflammatory responses in several diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a chronic, immune, demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system that represents the second most important cause of neurological disability in young adults. The drugs currently available to treat this disease are immunomodulators and, to date, there are no therapeutic remyelinating drugs available to manage MS. In this study, we show that TLR4 is located in post-mortem cortical lesions of MS patients and as a result, we evaluated the effect of its inhibition by ApTOLL in two different animal models of MS, that of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and the cuprizone model. ApTOLL administration ameliorated the clinical symptomatology of the affected mice, which was associated with better preservation and restoration of myelin and oligodendrocytes in the demyelinated lesions of these animals. This revealed not only an immunomodulatory but also a remyelinating effect of the treatment with ApTOLL which was corroborated on purified cultures of rodent and adult human oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs).     International consensus conference recommendations on ultrasound education for undergraduate medical students

    Objectives: The purpose of this study is to provide expert consensus recommendations to establish a global ultrasound curriculum for undergraduate medical students. Methods: 64 multi-disciplinary ultrasound experts from 16 countries, 50 multi-disciplinary ultrasound consultants, and 21 medical students and residents contributed to these recommendations. A modified Delphi consensus method was used that included a systematic literature search, evaluation of the quality of literature by the GRADE system, and the RAND appropriateness method for panel judgment and consensus decisions. The process included four in-person international discussion sessions and two rounds of online voting. Results: A total of 332 consensus conference statements in four curricular domains were considered: (1) curricular scope (4 statements), (2) curricular rationale (10 statements), (3) curricular characteristics (14 statements), and (4) curricular content (304 statements). Of these 332 statements, 145 were recommended, 126 were strongly recommended, and 61 were not recommended. Important aspects of an undergraduate ultrasound curriculum identified include curricular integration across the basic and clinical sciences and a competency and entrustable professional activity-based model. The curriculum should form the foundation of a life-long continuum of ultrasound education that prepares students for advanced training and patient care. In addition, the curriculum should complement and support the medical school curriculum as a whole with enhanced understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiological processes and clinical practice without displacing other important undergraduate learning. The content of the curriculum should be appropriate for the medical student level of training, evidence and expert opinion based, and include ongoing collaborative research and development to ensure optimum educational value and patient care. Conclusions: The international consensus conference has provided the first comprehensive document of recommendations for a basic ultrasound curriculum. The document reflects the opinion of a diverse and representative group of international expert ultrasound practitioners, educators, and learners. These recommendations can standardize undergraduate medical student ultrasound education while serving as a basis for additional research in medical education and the application of ultrasound in clinical practice

    Strong Interaction Physics at the Luminosity Frontier with 22 GeV Electrons at Jefferson Lab

    This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities.     Multiorgan MRI findings after hospitalisation with COVID-19 in the UK (C-MORE): a prospective, multicentre, observational cohort study

    Introduction: The multiorgan impact of moderate to severe coronavirus infections in the post-acute phase is still poorly understood. We aimed to evaluate the excess burden of multiorgan abnormalities after hospitalisation with COVID-19, evaluate their determinants, and explore associations with patient-related outcome measures. Methods: In a prospective, UK-wide, multicentre MRI follow-up study (C-MORE), adults (aged ≥18 years) discharged from hospital following COVID-19 who were included in Tier 2 of the Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 study (PHOSP-COVID) and contemporary controls with no evidence of previous COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid antibody negative) underwent multiorgan MRI (lungs, heart, brain, liver, and kidneys) with quantitative and qualitative assessment of images and clinical adjudication when relevant. Individuals with end-stage renal failure or contraindications to MRI were excluded. Participants also underwent detailed recording of symptoms, and physiological and biochemical tests. The primary outcome was the excess burden of multiorgan abnormalities (two or more organs) relative to controls, with further adjustments for potential confounders. The C-MORE study is ongoing and is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04510025. Findings: Of 2710 participants in Tier 2 of PHOSP-COVID, 531 were recruited across 13 UK-wide C-MORE sites. After exclusions, 259 C-MORE patients (mean age 57 years [SD 12]; 158 [61%] male and 101 [39%] female) who were discharged from hospital with PCR-confirmed or clinically diagnosed COVID-19 between March 1, 2020, and Nov 1, 2021, and 52 non-COVID-19 controls from the community (mean age 49 years [SD 14]; 30 [58%] male and 22 [42%] female) were included in the analysis. Patients were assessed at a median of 5·0 months (IQR 4·2–6·3) after hospital discharge. Compared with non-COVID-19 controls, patients were older, living with more obesity, and had more comorbidities. Multiorgan abnormalities on MRI were more frequent in patients than in controls (157 [61%] of 259 vs 14 [27%] of 52; p<0·0001) and independently associated with COVID-19 status (odds ratio [OR] 2·9 [95% CI 1·5–5·8]; padjusted=0·0023) after adjusting for relevant confounders. Compared with controls, patients were more likely to have MRI evidence of lung abnormalities (p=0·0001; parenchymal abnormalities), brain abnormalities (p<0·0001; more white matter hyperintensities and regional brain volume reduction), and kidney abnormalities (p=0·014; lower medullary T1 and loss of corticomedullary differentiation), whereas cardiac and liver MRI abnormalities were similar between patients and controls. Patients with multiorgan abnormalities were older (difference in mean age 7 years [95% CI 4–10]; mean age of 59·8 years [SD 11·7] with multiorgan abnormalities vs mean age of 52·8 years [11·9] without multiorgan abnormalities; p<0·0001), more likely to have three or more comorbidities (OR 2·47 [1·32–4·82]; padjusted=0·0059), and more likely to have a more severe acute infection (acute CRP >5mg/L, OR 3·55 [1·23–11·88]; padjusted=0·025) than those without multiorgan abnormalities. Presence of lung MRI abnormalities was associated with a two-fold higher risk of chest tightness, and multiorgan MRI abnormalities were associated with severe and very severe persistent physical and mental health impairment (PHOSP-COVID symptom clusters) after hospitalisation. Interpretation: After hospitalisation for COVID-19, people are at risk of multiorgan abnormalities in the medium term. Our findings emphasise the need for proactive multidisciplinary care pathways, with the potential for imaging to guide surveillance frequency and therapeutic stratification

    Development of 3D printed fibrillar collagen scaffold for tissue engineering

    Collagen is widely used in tissue engineering because it can be extracted in large quantities, and has excellent biocompatibility, good biodegradability, and weak antigenicity. In the present study, we isolated printable collagen from bovine Achilles tendon and examined the purity of the isolated collagen using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The bands obtained corresponded to α 1 , α 2 and β chains with little contamination from other small proteins. Furthermore, rheological measurements of collagen dispersions (60 mg per ml of PBS) at pH 7 revealed values of viscosity of 35.62 ± 1.42 Pa s at shear rate of 10 s − 1 and a shear thinning behavior. Collagen gels and solutions can be used for building scaffolds by three-dimensional (3D) printing. After designing and fabricating a low-cost 3D printer we assayed the collagen printing and obtaining 3D printed scaffolds of collagen at pH 7. The porosity of the scaffold was 90.22% ± 0.88% and the swelling ratio was 1437% ± 146%. The microstructure of the scaffolds was studied using scanning electron microscopy, and a porous mesh of fibrillar collagen was observed. In addition, the 3D printed collagen scaffold was not cytotoxic with cell viability higher than 70% using Vero and NIH 3 T3 cells. In vitro evaluation using both cells lines demonstrated that the collagen scaffolds had the ability to support cell attachment and proliferation. Also a fibrillar collagen mesh was observed after two weeks of culture at 37 °C. Overall, these results are promising since they show the capability of the presented protocol to obtain printable fibrillar collagen at pH 7 and the potential of the printing technique for building low-cost biocompatible 3D plotted structures which maintained the fibrillar collagen structure after incubation in culture media without using additional strategies as crosslinking.Fil: Díaz Nocera, Aden.     From Staging to Social Protagonism: Digital Transformation Within the Experimental Theater of Cali

    This chapter shows the process of carrying out an innovation proposal at the Cali Experimental Theatre (TEC) in the context of isolation measures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Through a process of “infrastructural inversion” inspired on the canonical work work of Star and Bowker, and following Simonsen and Hertzum, we revealed the deep historical connections that not only the TEC but the entire Colombian theatre movement of the 1960s had with the activists of social change such as workers’ organizations, trade unions and revolutionary movements. We present the iterative process of how this proposal was co-created with leadership of the TEC exposing infrastructural points of resistance and opportunity in the realisation of digital innovation. Our resulting proposal to the TEC reconnects the theatre group with the equivalent current actants of social change, such as independent journalism, citizen movements and non-governmental organizations, through a digital transformation, positioning it not only as a product of artistic quality but also as a social and historical research group. All this without altering the identity and dramaturgical tradition that the group has maintained intact for 65 years of existence. We conclude the paper by discussing the disciplinary paradoxes and sociotechnical limitations faced by this type of innovation requiring a digital transformation of their performing and delivery infrastructures
