Corrections to Finite Size Scaling in Percolation

A 1/L-expansion for percolation problems is proposed, where L is the lattice finite length. The square lattice with 27 different sizes L = 18, 22 ... 1594 is considered. Certain spanning probabilities were determined by Monte Carlo simulations, as continuous functions of the site occupation probability p. We estimate the critical threshold pc by applying the quoted expansion to these data. Also, the universal spanning probability at pc for an annulus with aspect ratio r=1/2 is estimated as C = 0.876657(45)

La ordenanza de la edificación como instrumento de diseño urbano

La investigación tiene como objeto de estudio la morfología urbana de la ciudad de Recife como resultado de las ordenanzas puestas en práctica en la ciudad, particularmente aquellas de naturaleza normativa, elaboradas desde los principios del siglo XX hasta el inicio de los años de 1980. Enfoca el ideario del Movimiento Moderno traducido en la formulación de esas normativas y los modelos de ciudad previstos y resultantes de tales instrumentos. En el caso de la ciudad de Recife, las ordenanzas puestas en práctica en la década de 1950 consolidan las premisas del pensamiento moderno en la configuración de la ciudad, ya en curso en distintas ciudades durante la década de 1940, y auñan los modelos del pensamiento moderno, transformados y adaptados a las singularidades locales, resultando en un urbanismo que une las pautas del Movimiento Moderno sin perder las tradiciones urbanísticas de la ciudad. Así mismo, a partir de la década de 1950 ocurre un cambio importante en la manera de proyectar la ciudad, donde las ordenanzas de la edificación basadas en parámetros constructivos abstractos, en la cuantificación del volumen edificado, devienen protagonistas de la ordenación de las ciudades.The object of this research is the study of the urban morphology of the city of Recife as a result of its urban laws. The work focuses on how modern movement ideals translated into the formulation of the urban laws and the expected and observed results derived from it. In the case of the city of Recife, it’s urban laws from the 1950s strengthened the assumptions of modern ideals, already underway in several cities since the 1940s. However, transformed and adapted to local singularities, resulting in an urbanism that unites the principles of the modern ideals without losing sight of the urban’s traditions of Recife. Furthermore, it is after 1950 that the way to design the city changes and land usage laws based on abstract parameters and the quantification of the bucking building become protagonists in the city´s masterplanning.Peer Reviewe

IL-10 underlies distinct susceptibility of BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice to Mycobacterium avium infection and influences efficacy of antibiotic therapy

Increased production of IL-10 has been frequently associated with augmented susceptibility to infection. However, the correlation between IL-10 activity and susceptibility to mycobacterial infection is still uncertain. Although studies using transgenic mice overexpressing IL-10 consistently showed an increased susceptibility to mycobacterial infection, experimental approaches in which IL-10 activity was reduced or abrogated originated inconclusive data. We show here that this controversy might be due to the mouse strains used in the various experimental procedures. Our results show that BALB/c mice are more susceptible than C57BL/6 to Mycobacterium avium infection. This increased susceptibility of BALB/c mice is, to a great extent, due to distinct activity of IL-10 between the two mouse strains. In accordance, reduction of IL-10 activity through the administration of anti-IL-10R mAb, or the absence of IL-10 as studied in IL-10 knockout mice, clearly decreased the susceptibility of BALB/c mice to M. avium but had a less obvious effect in C57BL/6 mice. Moreover, abrogation of IL-10 activity in infected BALB/c mice increased the efficacy of antimycobacterial therapy, whereas for the C57BL/6 mice it produced no effect. These observations show that the activity of IL-10 in response to the same mycobacterial stimulus influences not only the susceptibility to infection but also the efficacy of antimycobacterial therapy. This should now be considered in the context of human response to mycobacterial infection, particularly as a possible strategy to improve treatment against infections by mycobacteria

Evaluación de cultivares locales e introducidos de (RICINUS COMMUNIS L) higuerilla para condiciones de selva del Peru Región Ucayali 2011.

El experimento se instalo en el anexo experimental “Los Incas” de la Estación Experimental Agraria Pucallpa, departamento de Ucayali, provincia de Coronel Portillo, distrito de campo verde, el suelo donde se instalo el experimento es de altura o Ultisols. El diseño empleado fue de block completo randomizado con 04 tratamientos y 04 repeticiones, teniendo un total de 16 unidades experimentales, en un área de 1,881 m2. , los tratamientos evaluados fueron: T1 = Higuerilla BRS Nordestina, T2 = Higuerilla L1-003, T3 = Higuerilla L2-004 y T4 = Higuerilla L3-007. Se obtuvo como resultado que en las evaluaciones fenológicas en los cuatro cultivares donde para los parámetros agronómicos Higuerilla L3 – 007 e Higuerilla L 2-004, obtuvieron menor altura de planta al final del ciclo con 90 y 105 cm respectivamente siendo menor también en lo que corresponde a la altura de planta a la emisión del primer racimo que fue de 27.5 y 41 cm; asimismo el ecotipo Higuerilla L1 – 003 obtuvo 84 días a la emisión del primer racimo y 124 días a la cosecha del primer racimo siendo el más precoz con respecto a Higuerilla BRS Nordestina que obtuvo 147 días a la cosecha del primer racimo. Sin embargo en el parámetro de rendimiento de grano los ecotipos Higuerilla BRS Nordestina e Higuerilla L 2-004, rindieron un total de 602 y 524.8 kilos/ha respectivamente pero no superaron los 1,500 kg/ha
