The COST action “Standardising output-based surveillance to control non-regulated diseases of cattle in the European Union (SOUND control),” aims to harmonise the results of surveillance and control programmes (CPs) for non-EU regulated cattle diseases to facilitate safe trade and improve overall control of cattle infectious diseases. In this paper we aimed to provide an overview on the diversity of control for these diseases in Europe. A non-EU regulated cattle disease was defined as an infectious disease of cattle with no or limited control at EU level, which is not included in the European Union Animal health law Categories A or B under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2002. A CP was defined as surveillance and/or intervention strategies designed to lower the incidence, prevalence, mortality or prove freedom from a specific disease in a region or country. Passive surveillance, and active surveillance of breeding bulls under Council Directive 88/407/EEC were not considered as CPs. A questionnaire was designed to obtain country-specific information about CPs for each disease. Animal health experts from 33 European countries completed the questionnaire. Overall, there are 23 diseases for which a CP exists in one or more of the countries studied. The diseases for which CPs exist in the highest number of countries are enzootic bovine leukosis, bluetongue, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine viral diarrhoea and anthrax (CPs reported by between 16 and 31 countries). Every participating country has on average, 6 CPs (min–max: 1–13) in place. Most programmes are implemented at a national level (86%) and are applied to both dairy and non-dairy cattle (75%). Approximately one-third of the CPs are voluntary, and the funding structure is divided between government and private resources. Countries that have eradicated diseases like enzootic bovine leukosis, bluetongue, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis and bovine viral diarrhoea have implemented CPs for other diseases to further improve the health status of cattle in their country. The control of non-EU regulated cattle diseases is very heterogenous in Europe. Therefore, the standardising of the outputs of these programmes to enable comparison represents a challenge.Peer reviewe

Test rig for micro gear and experimental analysis on the meshing condition and failure characteristics of steel micro involute gear and metallic glass one

    No full text
A test rig to evaluate the performance of a micro involute gear with a diameter below 1 mm has been developed. Shaft position and shaft center distance of gears have great influence on the gear performance and therefore they must be adjusted precisely. In this research, the measurement and adjustment method of gear assembly condition and an in-situ observation system of gear condition are proposed, that are appropriately designed for micro gears. The meshing condition of micro involute gears is investigated experimentally. Based on the observation of sliding marks on the tooth flank, it is clarified that the meshing condition of a micro involute gear follows the meshing theory of an involute gear. Failure modes of SK4 micro gears and metallic glass micro gears are investigated. The experimental results indicated that SK4 micro gears suffer severe wear under unlubricated conditions that generate powderlike wear particles. On the other hand, flakelike wear particles appear in the metallic glass micro gear. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Effects of pine processionary caterpillar Thaumetopoea pityocampa contact in dogs: 41 cases (2002-2006)

The pine processionary caterpillar, Thaumetopoea pityocampa, is considered an emerging pine pest in Mediterranean countries, with high medical relevance. In recent years, adverse reactions reports in humans following contact with T. pityocampa have been increasingly reported. Dogs living in pinewood areas are also frequently exposed to the caterpillar. This work consisted on a retrospective study of 41 cases of lepidopterism. All dogs presented drooling, dysphagia, submandibular lymphadenomegaly and clinical signs of pain. The animals were distributed in three groups, according to the time span from exposure to the caterpillar until presentation: up to 2 h (group 1), 2-5 h (group 2) and more than 5 h (group 3). All animals from groups 2 (n = 5) and 3 (n = 9), and eight dogs from group 1 (n = 27) developed lingual necrosis. Lepidopterism coursed through a predictable clinical pattern. The evolution was mainly dependent on the time span between exposure to the caterpillar and medical intervention, which should take place earlier than 2 h from exposure

EVALUATION OF CELLULAR IMMUNE RESPONSE DURING XENOVACCINE THERAPY OF THE PATIENTS WITH STAGE IV OF COLORECTAL CANCER

Abstract. Thirty-seven patients with stage colorectal cancer stage IV were subjected to immunotherapy using a polyantigenic vaccine, prepared, basically, from lyzed cells of murine melanoma (B16) and murine carcinoma (LLC) cells. The inducing course of xenovaccine therapy consisted of 10 subcutaneous immunizations (5 injections weekly followed by 5 bi-weekly). Consolidating treatment included monthly vaccinations. Ther xenovaccine therapy was not associated with any serious adverse effects, and did not influence the composition of blood lymphocyte subsets. Significant increase in cellular immune reactions to vaccinal carcinoma-associated antigens occurred in the patients after an inducing treatment, as determined by both skin and antigen-driven blastogenesis test. The overall 2-year survival of thirty-seven stage IV colorectal cancer patients was shown to be significantly better, than in control group (37 clinically comparable patients), with median survival rates of 17 and 7 months, respectively
