On the Practical use of Variable Elimination in Constraint Optimization Problems: 'Still-life' as a Case Study

Variable elimination is a general technique for constraint processing. It is often discarded because of its high space complexity. However, it can be extremely useful when combined with other techniques. In this paper we study the applicability of variable elimination to the challenging problem of finding still-lifes. We illustrate several alternatives: variable elimination as a stand-alone algorithm, interleaved with search, and as a source of good quality lower bounds. We show that these techniques are the best known option both theoretically and empirically. In our experiments we have been able to solve the n=20 instance, which is far beyond reach with alternative approaches

Cutaneous B and T lymphomas: review of the clinical and histological diagnostic workup and experience in the HUA

[EN] Background. The involvement of the skin in neoplastic lymphoproliferative disorders can occur either by an affectation secondary to a systemic neoplasm or by a primary affectation of the skin, which is considered a primary cutaneous lymphoma, a nonHodgkin lymphoma presenting in the skin with no evidence of extracutaneous disease at the time of diagnosis. Clinical and histological diagnosis of cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders is a challenge in dermatopathology. Objective. The aim of this paper is to review a selection of cases of cutaneous lymphoma occurred during the past three years in the Hospital Universitario Araba (HUA), focusing on the clinical and pathological diagnostic workup as a whole, to try to meet the difficulties encountered and compare them with those found in the medical literature and highlight the importance of clinical and histological correlation. Methods. Four cases occurred in the HUA during 2015-2018 were selected and compared through a systematic review of cutaneous lymphoma diagnostic workup in articles published in online medical databases and journals. Results. Each case is exposed and analyzed, emphasizing the time elapsed from the first consultation of the patient to final diagnosis, the number of biopsies that each case required, the inquiries made to external centers to confirm the diagnoses and the intervention of different departments. The information found during the bibliographic review of each case is exposed. Conclusion. Clinical and pathological correlation is crucial and should be materialized in the development of sessions and the organization of interdisciplinary committees, in which the diagnosis of cutaneous lymphoma is addressed jointly by the departments involved

During the last few years, a number of archaeological surveys have been carried out in Alegria-Dulantzi, an ancient town in the province of Álava, Spain. During these surveys, a large place of worship following the lines of a basilica emerged, and within the building a number of burials with the remains of clothing with clear North Pyrenean characteristics. In this paper, additional information about this building is set out, emphasizing its liturgical layout, its associated burials, its architecture, and its chronology and historical evolution

σ2 receptor and its role in cancer with focus on a multitarget directed ligand (Mtdl) approach

    Get PDF
Sigma-2 (σ2) is an endoplasmic receptor identified as the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) transmembrane protein TMEM97. Despite its controversial identity, which was only recently solved, this protein has gained scientific interest because of its role in the proliferative status of cells; many tumor cells from different organs overexpress the σ2 receptor, and many σ2 ligands display cytotoxic actions in (resistant) cancer cells. These properties have shed light on the σ2 receptor as a potential druggable target to be bound/activated for the diagnosis or therapy of tumors. Additionally, diverse groups have shown how the σ2 receptor can be exploited for the targeted delivery of the anticancer drugs to tumors. As the cancer disease is a multifactorial pathology with multiple cell populations, a polypharmacological approach is very often needed. Instead of the simultaneous administration of different classes of drugs, the use of one molecule that interacts with diverse pharmacological targets, namely MultiTarget Directed Ligand (MTDL), is a promising and currently pursued strategy, that may overcome the pharmacokinetic problems associated with the administration of multiple molecules. This review aims to point out the progress regarding the σ2 ligands in the oncology field, with a focus on MTDLs directed towards σ2 receptors as promising weapons against (resistant) cancer diseases

Brainstorm Pipeline Analysis of Resting-State Data From the Open MEG Archive

    Get PDF
We present a simple, reproducible analysis pipeline applied to resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from the Open MEG Archive (OMEGA). The data workflow was implemented with Brainstorm, which like OMEGA is free and openly accessible. The proposed pipeline produces group maps of ongoing brain activity decomposed in the typical frequency bands of electrophysiology. The procedure is presented as a technical proof of concept for streamlining a broader range and more sophisticated studies of resting-state electrophysiological data. It also features the recently introduced extension of the brain imaging data structure (BIDS) to MEG data, highlighting the scalability and generalizability of Brainstorm analytical pipelines to other, and potentially larger data volumes
