    This article is about how the legal issues over concubines were dealt with during the reception of modern legal system in Thailand. The family law in the Civil and Commercial Code says a marriage can be arranged only if a man or a woman is not the spouse of another person yet. However, according to the article on action for divorce, when a wife committed adultery, her husband was entitled to get a divorce from his wife, but, on the contrary, the rule did not apply vice versa. In addition, the provisions of bigamy and adultery were not specified in the Penal Code, and the action of having concubines was not considered as a crime. The Dika Court also admitted the relationship between a husband and his concubines. In conclusion, the analysis of the texts of these Codes and the judicial decisions by the Dika Court can tell us that even after the monogamous system was specified, it allowed a husband to have concubines, and concubinage co-existed with the monogamous system in modern Thailand.論

    Modulation of Gene Expression by Human Cytosolic tRNase ZL through 5′-Half-tRNA

    A long form (tRNase ZL) of tRNA 3′ processing endoribonuclease (tRNase Z, or 3′ tRNase) can cleave any target RNA at any desired site under the direction of artificial small guide RNA (sgRNA) that mimics a 5′-half portion of tRNA. Based on this enzymatic property, a gene silencing technology has been developed, in which a specific mRNA level can be downregulated by introducing into cells a synthetic 5′-half-tRNA that is designed to form a pre-tRNA-like complex with a part of the mRNA. Recently 5′-half-tRNA fragments have been reported to exist stably in various types of cells, although little is know about their physiological roles. We were curious to know if endogenous 5′-half-tRNA works as sgRNA for tRNase ZL in the cells. Here we show that human cytosolic tRNase ZL modulates gene expression through 5′-half-tRNA. We found that 5′-half-tRNAGlu, which co-immunoprecipitates with tRNase ZL, exists predominantly in the cytoplasm, functions as sgRNA in vitro, and downregulates the level of a luciferase mRNA containing its target sequence in human kidney 293 cells. We also demonstrated that the PPM1F mRNA is one of the genuine targets of tRNase ZL guided by 5′-half-tRNAGlu. Furthermore, the DNA microarray data suggested that tRNase ZL is likely to be involved in the p53 signaling pathway and apoptosis

    Myt1 protein kinase is essential for Golgi and ER assembly during mitotic exit

    Myt1 was originally identified as an inhibitory kinase for Cdc2 (Cdk1), the master engine of mitosis, and has been thought to function, together with Wee1, as a negative regulator of mitotic entry. In this study, we report an unexpected finding that Myt1 is essential for Golgi and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) assembly during telophase in mammalian cells. Our analyses reveal that both cyclin B1 and cyclin B2 serve as targets of Myt1 for proper Golgi and ER assembly to occur. Thus, our results show that Myt1-mediated suppression of Cdc2 activity is not indispensable for the regulation of a broad range of mitotic events but is specifically required for the control of intracellular membrane dynamics during mitosis

    Rat limbal epithelial side population cells exhibit a distinct expression of stem cell markers that are lacking in side population cells from the central cornea

    AbstractThe side population (SP) phenotype is shared by stem cells in various tissues and species. Here we demonstrate SP cells with Hoechst dye efflux were surprisingly collected from the epithelia of both the rat limbus and central cornea, unlike in human and rabbit eyes. Our results show that rat limbal SP cells have a significantly higher expression of the stem cell markers ABCG2, nestin, and notch 1, compared to central corneal SP cells. Immunohistochemistry also revealed that ABCG2 and the epithelial stem/progenitor cell marker p63 were expressed only in basal limbal epithelial cells. These results demonstrate that ABCG2 expression is closely linked to the stem cell phenotype of SP cells

    Proximal Vertebral Body Fracture after 4-Level Fusion Using L1 as the Upper Instrumented Vertebra for Lumbar Degenerative Disease: Report of 2 Cases with Literature Review

    Some cases with lumbar degenerative diseases require multi-level fusion surgeries. At our institute, 27 and 4 procedures of 3- and 4-level fusion were performed out of a total 672 posterior lumbar interfusions (PLIFs) on patients with lumbar degenerative disease from 2005 to 2010. We present 2 osteoporotic patients who developed proximal vertebral body fracture after 4-level fusion. Both cases presented with gait disability for leg pain by degenerative lumbar scoliosis and canal stenosis at the levels of L1/2-4/5. After 4-level fusion using L1 as the upper instrumented vertebra, proximal vertebral body fractures were found along with the right pedicle fractures of L1 in both cases. One of these patients, aged 82 years, was treated as an outpatient using a hard corset for 24 months, but the fractures were exacerbated over time. In the other patient, posterolateral fusion was extended from Th10 to L5. Both patients can walk alone and have been thoroughly followed up. In both cases, the fracture of the right L1 pedicle might be related to the subsequent fractures and fusion failure. In consideration of multi-level fusion, L1 should be avoided as an upper instrumented vertebra to prevent junctional kyphosis, especially in cases with osteoporosis and flat back posture
