Estimation of the physical release of organic matter from ice using observational data and a coupled ice-water box model

    Get PDF
In order to estimate the physical release of organic matter from sea ice and biological production in the ice, we conducted a series of field observations (samplings of water beneath the ice and of an ice core, and deployment of sediment traps) on the ice on Saroma Ko lagoon, Hokkaido, Japan in 2004 and developed a coupled ice-water box model. The observations documented the accumulation of organic matter in the ice. The box model estimates biological production in the ice at 208mgCm^day^ (Mar. 1-2) and 60mgCm^day^ (Mar. 2-11), and estimates the fluxes of the physical release at 142mgCm^day^ (Mar. 1-2) and 68mgCm^day^ (Mar. 2-11), which account for more than 70% of biological production in the ice. The physical release efficiently transports organic matter from sea ices to water column

Vitamin D and Cyclic Nucleotide Changes in Response to Calcitonin in Man

    Get PDF
Vitamin D and cyclic AMP changes in response to calcitonin injection were studies in three normal adults and one patient with osteogenesis imperfecta. Plasma 1,25-(OH)2D levels increased in one normal adult and the patient. Plasma 25-OHD levels did not change. Plasma cyclic AMP was decreased in all four subjects, but urine cyclic AMP did not change. These results suggest that calcitonin may affect plasma cyclic AMP and may have some affect on renal la-hydroxylation in humans

Fermi resonance interaction in hetero-dimer and trimer ions containing aniline+

    Get PDF
Vibrational spectra of hetero-dimer and trimer ions containing aniline+ are measured by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy. For the dimer ions, the NH2-bending overtone band gains its intensity through Fermi resonance interaction with the hydrogen-bonded NH stretching fundamental. Unperturbed frequencies of the NH2-bending overtone are calculated to be in the range of 3255-3276 cm-1, suggesting that the frequency is almost intact upon cluster formation. For the trimer ions, Fermi resonance interaction occurs mainly between the NH2-bending overtone and the stretching fundamental of the NH oscillator involved in the stronger hydrogen bond

Spectroscopy of eta'-nucleus bound states at GSI-SIS

The eta' meson mass may be reduced due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. If this is the case, an eta'-nucleus system may form a nuclear bound state. We plan to carry out a missing-mass spectroscopy with the 12C(p,d) reaction at GSI-SIS. Peak structures corresponding to such a bound state may be observed even in an inclusive measurement, if the decay width is narrow enough.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of MESON2012 (12th International Workshop on Meson Production, Properties and Interaction), Krakow, Polan

NMR and mutational identification of the collagen-binding site of the chaperone Hsp47.

Heat shock protein 47 (Hsp47) acts as a client-specific chaperone for collagen and plays a vital role in collagen maturation and the consequent embryonic development. In addition, this protein can be a potential target for the treatment of fibrosis. Despite its physiological and pathological importance, little is currently known about the collagen-binding mode of Hsp47 from a structural aspect. Here, we describe an NMR study that was conducted to identify the collagen-binding site of Hsp47. We used chicken Hsp47, which has higher solubility than its human counterpart, and applied a selective (15)N-labeling method targeting its tryptophan and histidine residues. Spectral assignments were made based on site-directed mutagenesis of the individual residues. By inspecting the spectral changes that were observed upon interaction with a trimeric collagen peptide and the mutational data, we successfully mapped the collagen-binding site in the B/C β-barrel domain and a nearby loop in a 3D-homology model based upon a serpin fold. This conclusion was confirmed by mutational analysis. Our findings provide a molecular basis for the design of compounds that target the interaction between Hsp47 and procollagen as therapeutics for fibrotic diseases

Feasibility Study of Observing eta' Mesic Nuclei with (p,d) Reaction

A novel method is proposed to measure eta'(958) meson bound states in 11C nuclei by missing mass spectroscopy of the 12C(p,d) reaction near the eta' production threshold. It is shown that peak structures will be observed experimentally in an inclusive measurement in case that the in-medium eta' mass reduction is sufficiently large and that the decay width of eta' mesic states is narrow enough. Such a measurement will be feasible with the intense proton beam supplied by the SIS synchrotron at GSI combined with the good energy resolution of the fragment separator FRS.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Progress of Theoretical Physic

In case of lingual displacement of lateral incisor, we should apply labial root torque after labial tipping movement of lateral incisor. The torque moment generated by third order bend is one of the important keys for orthodontic tooth movement. The objective of this study was to investigate the stress distribution on root surface and in surround periodontal ligament (PDL) when labial root torque is applied to lingually displaced lateral incisor by finite element (FE) analysis. The FE models of maxillary incisors and canine were developed from three-dimensional (3 D) point data sets of CT-image. The models of 0.018” slot sizes stainless steel brackets and 0.018 x 0.025-inch stainless steel (SS) wires were constructed based on 3 D CAD data. As a loading condition, 6 degrees labial root torque moment was applied to the archwire at lateral incisor. The distribution of the von Mises equivalent stresses (equivalent stress) on the root surface and in surrounding PDL of incisors and canine was evaluated using an FE analysis. When applying labial root torque at lateral incisor, greater equivalent stress was observed at the labial cervical margin and root apex. The values of equivalent stresses on the root surface of lateral incisor were less than 11.0 × 10-3 MPa, while the maximum equivalent stress of the neighboring teeth (central incisor and canine) were 4.5 × 10-3 observed at the lingual cervical margin and root apex. These results indicate the neighboring teeth are considerably affected as a reaction force when the torque moment is applied to the targeted tooth
