    Exact one-loop results for li→ljγl_i \to l_j\gamma in 3-3-1 models

    We investigate the decays li→ljγl_i\rightarrow l_j \gamma, with li=e,μ,τl_i=e,\mu,\tau in a general class of 3-3-1 models with heavy exotic leptons with arbitrary electric charges. We present full and exact analytical results keeping external lepton masses. As a by product, we perform numerical comparisons between exact results and approximate ones where the external lepton masses are neglected. As expected, we found that branching fractions can reach the current experimental limits if mixings and mass differences of the exotic leptons are large enough. We also found unexpectedly that, depending on the parameter values, there can be huge destructive interference between the gauge and Higgs contributions when the gauge bosons connecting the Standard Model leptons to the exotic leptons are light enough.     b anti-b Higgs production at the LHC: Yukawa corrections and the leading Landau singularity

    At tree-level Higgs production in association with a b-quark pair proceeds through the small Yukawa bottom coupling in the Standard Model. Even in the limit where this coupling vanishes, electroweak one-loop effects, through the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling in particular, can still trigger this reaction. This contribution is small for Higgs masses around 120GeV but it quickly picks up for higher Higgs masses especially because the one-loop amplitude develops a leading Landau singularity and new thresholds open up. These effects can be viewed as the production of a pair of top quarks which rescatter to give rise to Higgs production through WW fusion. We study the leading Landau singularity in detail. Since this singularity is not integrable when the one-loop amplitude is squared, we regulate the cross section by taking into account the width of the internal top and W particles. This requires that we extend the usual box one-loop function to the case of imaginary masses. We show how this can be implemented analytically in our case. We study in some detail the cross section at the LHC as a function of the Higgs mass and show how some distributions can be drastically affected compared to the tree-level result.Comment: 48 pages, 20 figures.     Protective effects of transforming growth factor β2 in intestinal epithelial cells by regulation of proteins associated with stress and endotoxin responses

    Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β2 is an important anti-inflammatory protein in milk and colostrum. TGF-β2 supplementation appears to reduce gut inflammatory diseases in early life, such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in young mice. However, the molecular mechanisms by which TGF-β2 protects immature intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) remain to be more clearly elucidated before interventions in infants can be considered. Porcine IECs PsIc1 were treated with TGF-β2 and/or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and changes in the cellular proteome were subsequently analyzed using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis-MS and LC-MS-based proteomics. TGF-β2 alone induced the differential expression of 13 proteins and the majority of the identified proteins were associated with stress responses, TGF-β and Toll-like receptor 4 signaling cascades. In particular, a series of heat shock proteins had similar differential trends as previously shown in the intestine of NEC-resistant preterm pigs and young mice. Furthermore, LC-MS-based proteomics and Western blot analyses revealed 20 differentially expressed proteins following treatment with TGF-β2 in LPS-challenged IECs. Thirteen of these proteins were associated with stress response pathways, among which five proteins were altered by LPS and restored by TGF-β2, whereas six were differentially expressed only by TGF-β2 in LPS-challenged IECs. Based on previously reported biological functions, these patterns indicate the anti-stress and anti-inflammatory effects of TGF-β2 in IECs. We conclude that TGF-β2 of dietary or endogenous origin may regulate the IEC responses against LPS stimuli, thereby supporting cellular homeostasis and innate immunity in response to bacterial colonization, and the first enteral feeding in early life

    D0C : A code to calculate scalar one-loop four-point integrals with complex masses

    We present a new Fortran code to calculate the scalar one-loop four-point integral with complex internal masses, based on the method of 't Hooft and Veltman. The code is applicable when the external momenta fulfill a certain physical condition. In particular it holds if one of the external momenta or a sum of them is timelike or lightlike and therefore covers all physical processes at colliders. All the special cases related to massless external particles are treated separately. Some technical issues related to numerical evaluation and Landau singularities are discussed.Comment: Version published in CP

    Same-Day Discharge after Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: An Analysis of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program Database.

    BACKGROUND:Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) has been performed with successful discharge on postoperative day 1 (POD1). There are limited studies on same-day discharge after LRYGB. The objective of this study was to examine the frequency and outcomes of same-day discharge after LRYGB. STUDY DESIGN:The 2015 Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) database was analyzed for adult patients who underwent elective LRYGB cases with same-day vs POD1 discharge. Open and revisional cases were excluded. Multivariate analysis was performed to compare risk-adjusted 30-day mortality, overall morbidity, readmission, and reoperation. RESULTS:There were 354 (0.9%) patients who were discharged on the same day as surgery after LRYGB. After exclusion criteria, 319 patients with same-day discharge and 9,402 patients with POD1 discharge were examined. For same-day vs POD1 discharge groups, mean ages were 45.0 and 44.5 years, respectively, and mean BMIs were 47.3 kg/m2 and 45.9 kg/m2, respectively. The unadjusted mortality rate was significantly higher for same-day compared with POD1 discharge (0.94% vs. 0.05%, respectively; p = 0.0017). Compared with POD1 discharge, same-day discharge had higher overall morbidity (3.76% vs 1.54%; adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 2.41; p = 0.0216), but no statistically significant differences for readmissions (3.45% vs. 3.66%; AOR 0.85; p = 0.9999) or reoperations (1.88% vs. 0.89%; AOR 2.33; p = 0.2428). CONCLUSIONS:Same-day discharge after LRYGB is associated with increased morbidity and mortality compared with POD1 discharge. The practice of same-day discharge after LRYGB should be considered experimental until further studies confirm which patient characteristics will ensure safe same-day discharge

    Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are concerning causes of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing general surgical procedures. Laparoscopic surgery has gained rapid acceptance in the past several years and is now a commonly performed procedure by most general surgeons. Multiple anecdotal reports of pulmonary embolism following laparoscopic cholecystectomy have been reported, but the true incidence of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery is not known. We present a case of pulmonary embolism following laparoscopic repair of paraesophageal hernia. The literature is then reviewed regarding the incidence of pulmonary embolism following laparoscopic surgery, the mechanism of deep venous thrombosis formation, and the recommendations for deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis in patients undergoing laparoscopic procedures
