    Prevention of AMI Induced Ventricular Remodeling: Inhibitory Effects of Heart-Protecting Musk Pill on IL-6 and TNF-Alpha

    Heart-Protecting Musk Pill (HMP) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been used for the prevention and treatment of coronary heart disease in clinic. The current study investigated the effect of HMP on the concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and observed the relationship between level changes of inflammatory cytokines and ventricular remodeling in rats with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Animal models of AMI were made by coronary artery ligation in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. AMI rats showed increased levels of IL-6 and TNF-α. Treatment with HMP decreases IL-6 and TNF-α concentrations in rats with AMI. Histopathological and transmission electron microscopic findings were also essentially in agreement with biochemical findings. The results of our study revealed that inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α induce cardiac remodeling in rats after AMI; HMP improves cardiac function and ameliorates ventricular remodeling by downregulating the expression of IL-6 and TNF-α and further suppressing the ultrastructural changes of myocardial cells

    Wear Behaviors of a Ti-Based Bulk Metallic Glass at Elevated Temperatures

    Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) often offer excellent physical, chemical, and mechanical properties such as high strength, high hardness, and good wear/corrosion resistance, stemming from their unique atomic configuration. These properties enable them to be a potential engineering material in a range of industrial applications. However, the wear behaviors must be considered in structural applications. Here, the wear tests of a TiZrNiCuBe bulk metallic glass at high temperatures were carried out. As the testing temperature increases, the wear rate of the studied BMG sample gradually decreases and the sample surface becomes smoother. Meanwhile, a higher applied normal load causes a higher wear rate. The wear mechanism evolves from the abrasive to adhesive mode with increase in the testing temperature. The results obtained here could shed more insights into the deformation mechanism of BMGs and thus extend their industrial uses in high-temperature environments

    The diagnostic agreement of sarcopenic obesity with different definitions in Chinese community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults

    BackgroundIn 2022, the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) launched a consensus on the diagnostic methods for sarcopenic obesity (SO). The study aimed to identify the prevalence and diagnostic agreement of SO using different diagnostic methods in a cohort of subjects from West China aged at least 50 years old.MethodsA large multi-ethnic sample of 4,155 participants from the West China Health and Aging Trend (WCHAT) study was analyzed. SO was defined according to the newly published consensus of the ESPEN/EASO. Furthermore, SO was diagnosed as a combination of sarcopenia and obesity. The criteria established by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS2019) were used to define sarcopenia. Obesity was defined by four widely used indicators: percent of body fat (PBF), visceral fat area (VFA), waist circumference (WC), and body mass index (BMI). Cohen’s kappa was used to analyze the diagnostic agreement of the above five diagnostic methods.ResultsA total of 4,155 participants were part of the study, including 1,499 men (63.76 ± 8.23 years) and 2,656 women (61.61 ± 8.20 years). The prevalence of SO was 0.63–7.22% with different diagnostic methods. The diagnosis agreement of five diagnostic methods was poor-to-good (κ: 0.06–0.67). The consensus by the ESPEN/EASO had the poorest agreement with other methods (κ: 0.06–0.32). AWGS+VFA had the best agreement with AWGS+WC (κ = 0.67), and consensus by the ESPEN/EASO had the best agreement with AWGS+ PBF (κ = 0.32).ConclusionThe prevalence and diagnostic agreement of SO varies considerably between different diagnostic methods. AWGS+WC has the highest diagnostic rate in the diagnosis of SO, whereas AWGS+BMI has the lowest. AWGS+VFA has a relatively good diagnostic agreement with other diagnostic methods, while the consensus of the ESPEN/EASO has a poor diagnostic agreement. AWGS+PBF may be suitable for the alternative diagnosis of the 2022 ESPEN/EASO

    Response to Pegylated Interferon Plus Ribavirin in Patients with Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 6a Infection from Guangdong and Guangxi Province of China

    Aim. Our aim is to survey the treatment effect of PEG-IFN plus ribavirin in patients infected with HCV genotype 6a in Guangdong and Guangxi province of China and investigate best course of antiviral treatment for patients with HCV-6a infection. Methods. 515 eligible patients received subcutaneous 180 μg PEG-IFNα-2a or 1.5 μg/kg PEG-IFNα-2b once weekly plus oral ribavirin. Primary outcome was SVR by intention-to-treat analysis. Secondary outcome was RVR, cEVR, ETR, and relapse rate. Results. SVR in patients with HCV-6a infection treated for 48 weeks was comparable to that in patients with HCV-2/3 infection (80.9% versus 82.5%, p=0.812) and higher than that in patients with HCV-1b infection (80.9% versus 67.2%, p=0.014). ETR (98.9% versus 90.6%, p=0.016), virological response at month 3 of end-of- treatment (88.8% versus 76.6%, p=0.044), SVR (80.9% versus 65.6%, p=0.032), and virological response at month 12 of end-of-treatment (76.4% versus 60.9%, p=0.04) in patients with HCV-6a infection treated for 48 weeks were higher than those in patients with HCV-6a infection treated for 24 weeks. Conclusion. SVR in patients with HCV-6a treated for 48 weeks was comparable to that in patients with HCV-2/3 infection and higher than that in patients with HCV-1b infection; patients with HCV-6a infection treated for 48 weeks had a superior treatment response than patients treated for 24 weeks

    ASFL-YOLOX: an adaptive spatial feature fusion and lightweight detection method for insect pests of the Papilionidae family

    IntroductionInsect pests from the family Papilionidae (IPPs) are a seasonal threat to citrus orchards, causing damage to young leaves, affecting canopy formation and fruiting. Existing pest detection models used by orchard plant protection equipment lack a balance between inference speed and accuracy.MethodsTo address this issue, we propose an adaptive spatial feature fusion and lightweight detection model for IPPs, called ASFL-YOLOX. Our model includes several optimizations, such as the use of the Tanh-Softplus activation function, integration of the efficient channel attention mechanism, adoption of the adaptive spatial feature fusion module, and implementation of the soft Dlou non-maximum suppression algorithm. We also propose a structured pruning curation technique to eliminate unnecessary connections and network parameters.ResultsExperimental results demonstrate that ASFL-YOLOX outperforms previous models in terms of inference speed and accuracy. Our model shows an increase in inference speed by 29 FPS compared to YOLOv7-x, a higher mAP of approximately 10% than YOLOv7-tiny, and a faster inference frame rate on embedded platforms compared to SSD300 and Faster R-CNN. We compressed the model parameters of ASFL-YOLOX by 88.97%, reducing the number of floating point operations per second from 141.90G to 30.87G while achieving an mAP higher than 95%.DiscussionOur model can accurately and quickly detect fruit tree pest stress in unstructured orchards and is suitable for transplantation to embedded systems. This can provide technical support for pest identification and localization systems for orchard plant protection equipment

    Magnesium thixotropic structure produced by controlled nucleation method

    [Abstract]: Controlled Nucleation Method (CNM) is applied to AZ91 magnesium alloy to produce thixotropic structure suitable for semisolid casting. Pouring temperature and cooling rate are the two important solidification conditions that can be used for microstructure control in CNM process. Both have a significant effect on the as-cast microstructure and therefore on semisolid microstructure. Low pouring temperature produces fine non-dendritic as-cast structure. After partial remelting and isothermal holding, it develops into a thixotropic structure. High pouring temperature leads to a coarse dendritic as-cast structure, which turns into an irregular solid network in semisolid state. High pouring temperature can combine with high cooling rate to achieve a thixotropic structure
