    Droplet evaporation in one-component fluids: Dynamic van der Waals theory

    In a one-component fluid, we investigate evaporation of a small axysymmetric liquid droplet in the partial wetting condition on a heated wall at T0.9TcT\sim 0.9 T_c. In the dynamic van der Waals theory (Phys. Rev. E {\bf 75}, 036304 (2007)), we take into account the latent heat transport from liquid to gas upon evaporation. Along the gas-liquid interface, the temperature is nearly equal to the equilibrium coexisting temperature away from the substrate, but it rises sharply to the wall temperature close to the substrate. On an isothermal substrate, evaporation takes place mostly on a narrow interface region near the contact line in a late stage, which is a characteristic feature in one-component fluids.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    A linked cluster expansion for the calculation of the semi-inclusive A(e,e'p)X processes using correlated Glauber wave functions

    The distorted one-body mixed density matrix, which is the basic nuclear quantity appearing in the definition of the cross section for the semi-inclusive A(e,e'p)X processes, is calculated within a linked-cluster expansion based upon correlated wave functions and the Glauber multiple scattering theory to take into account the final state interaction of the ejected nucleon. The nuclear transparency for 16O and 40Ca is calculated using realistic central and non-central correlations and the important role played by the latter is illustrated.Comment: 18 pages, RevTeX, 3 ps figures.     Сombined treatment of squamous-cell anal cancer

    Since 1974 chemoradiation scheme proposed by Nigro remains the standard of care for squamous-cell anal cancer in most countries. Improvement of treatment results can be achieved by developing new treatment schemes including different radio- and chemosensitizers.Methods. Results of treatment of 157 T1–4N0–2M0 squamous-cell anal cancer patients, which underwent treatment during 1990–2012 were analyzed. Patients were divided into 3 groups: group A received hyperfractionated radiotherapy (RT) single dose 1.2 Gy bid, total dose 40–44 Gy with 3–5 sessions of local hyperthermia (HT) during treatment; group B had similar RT + HT scheme with addition of chemotherapy (CT) with cisplatin 20 mg/m2 in days 1, 3 weeks 1–4 and bleomycin 15 mg in days 2, 4 weeks 1–4; group C had RT with single dose 2 Gy, same total dose, HT and CT as in group B and additionally received metronidazole 10 g/m2 per rectum in a polymeric composition. Two weeks after 1st treatment stage a second course of RT was carried out 20–24 Gy in 2 Gy fractions in all patient groups.Results. Sphincter-sparing treatment was carried out in 11 (50 %), 71 (80.68 %) and 44 (93.62 %) in groups A, B and C accordingly. Three year overall survival (OS) was 60.0; 82.4; 96.4 %; 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) 36.6; 69.8 and 76.3 % accordingly.Conclusions. In our study combined treatment using radiosensitization allow to improve sphincter preservation rate to 93 %, improve OS and DFS for squamous-cell anal cancer patients

    Spinodal Decomposition in Binary Gases

    We carried out three-dimensional simulations, with about 1.4 million particles, of phase segregation in a low density binary fluid mixture, described mesoscopically by energy and momentum conserving Boltzmann-Vlasov equations. Using a combination of Direct Simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) for the short range collisions and a version of Particle-In-Cell(PIC) evolution for the smooth long range interaction, we found dynamical scaling after the ratio of the interface thickness(whose shape is described approximately by a hyperbolic tangent profile) to the domain size is less than ~0.1. The scaling length R(t) grows at late times like t^alpha, with alpha=1 for critical quenches and alpha=1/3 for off-critical ones.     The work presents evaluation of influence of plant preparation «Thyreoton-forte» on endothelium of vessels and morphological structure of thyroid gland in experimental hypothyreosis. Experimental hypothyreosis in rats was induced by administration of mercazolilum (10 mg/kg, intragastric introduction) during 28 days. The course administration of «Thyreoton-forte» (50,100 mg/kg, intragastric introduction) decreases the number of circulating endothelial cells (p < 0,05) and normalizes the structure of thyroid gland. Pharmacological effect of «Thyreoton-forte» is provided by protective influence in vascular endothelium and positive action on thyroid gland

    Typical and Atypical Antipsychotic Drugs Increase Extracellular Histamine Levels in the Rat Medial Prefrontal Cortex: Contribution of Histamine H1 Receptor Blockade

    Atypical antipsychotics such as clozapine and olanzapine have been shown to enhance histamine turnover and this effect has been hypothesized to contribute to their improved therapeutic profile compared to typical antipsychotics. In the present study, we examined the effects of antipsychotic drugs on histamine (HA) efflux in the mPFC of the rat by means of in vivo microdialysis and sought to differentiate the receptor mechanisms which underlie such effects. Olanzapine and clozapine increased mPFC HA efflux in a dose related manner. Increased HA efflux was also observed after quetiapine, chlorpromazine, and perphenazine treatment. We found no effect of the selective 5-HT2A antagonist MDL100907, 5-HT2c antagonist SB242084, or the 5-HT6 antagonist Ro 04-6790 on mPFC HA efflux. HA efflux was increased following treatment with selective H1 receptor antagonists pyrilamine, diphenhydramine, and triprolidine, the H3 receptor antagonist ciproxifan and the mixed 5-HT2A/H1 receptor antagonist ketanserin. The potential novel antipsychotic drug FMPD, which has a lower affinity at H1 receptors than olanzapine, did not affect HA efflux. Similarly, other antipsychotics with lower H1 receptor affinity (risperidone, aripiprazole, and haloperidol) were also without effect on HA efflux. Finally, HA efflux after antipsychotic treatment was significantly correlated with affinity at H1 receptors whereas nine other receptors, including 5-HT2A, were not. These results demonstrate that both typical and atypical antipsychotics increase mPFC histamine efflux and this effect may be mediated via antagonism of histamine H1 receptors

    Using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of a two-component Lennard-Jones model in three dimensions, we show that the late-time dynamics of spinodal decomposition in concentrated binary fluids reaches a viscous scaling regime with a growth exponent n=1n=1, in agreement with experiments and a theoretical analysis for viscous growth.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Improving Preschoolers’ Theory of Mind Skills With Mobile Games

    This single-case research study examined whether interactive touch screen apps enriched with Theory of Mind (ToM)—enhancing language would promote ToM skills in preschoolers. Six typically developing girls between the ages of 46- and 52- months participated in multiple sessions across the three phases of the study: In baseline, participants played games without voice-overs; in the original treatment phase, participants played games with embedded voice-overs; finally, in the modified treatment phase, participants first played games with embedded voice-overs, then engaged in the researcher-led conversation. All sessions across the three phases concluded with ToM assessments: two measures based on a continuous scale. The first measure included three tasks targeting earlier-developing ToM skills (diverse desires, diverse beliefs, and knowledge access), and the other measure had two tasks that assessed a later-developing ToM competency, false belief understanding. Results showed that apps with ToM-embedded language improved children’s earlier-developing ToM skills (i.e., understanding that people can have different desires, beliefs, and knowledge access) in the phase where an adult-led conversation also followed voice-over-enriched app play. Apps with ToM-embedded language without a follow-up discussion were only marginally effective in promoting the earlier-emerging ToM skills. Across the conditions, apps were not effective in promoting children’s later-developing ToM skills—false belief understanding. Our findings indicate that incorporating ToM conducive language in mobile apps can promote ToM development in preschoolers, especially when supplemented by an adult-led conversation
