Dynamics of pollen beetle (Brassicogethes aeneus) immigration and colonization of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) in Europe
BACKGROUND
Understanding the dynamics of pest immigration into an agroecosystem enables effective and timely management strategies. The pollen beetle (Brassicogethes aeneus) is a primary pest of the inflorescence stages of oilseed rape (Brassica napus). This study investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of pollen beetle immigration into oilseed rape fields in Denmark and the UK using multiple methods, including optical sensors.
RESULTS
In all fields, pollen beetles were found to be aggregated and beetle density was related to plant growth stage, with more beetles occurring on plants after the budding stage than before inflorescence development. Optical sensors were the most efficient monitoring method, recording pollen beetles 2 and 4 days ahead of water traps and counts from plant scouting, respectively.
CONCLUSION
Optical sensors are a promising tool for early warning of insect pest immigration. The aggregation pattern of pollen beetles post immigration could be used to precisely target control in oilseed rape crops. © 2023 The Authors. Transient enhancement of photorefractive gratings in lead germanate by homogeneous pyroelectric fields
During holographic recording in pure (Pb5Ge3O11) and doped [(Pb1−xBax)5Ge3O11] lead germanate crystals, the diffraction efficiency is transiently enhanced at the initial stage. The enhancement is studied as a function of writing-beam intensity and of dark delay time between two successive recording processes and with open- or short-circuited crystal surfaces. Homogeneous pyroelectric fields that arise from heating of the crystals by cw illumination are revealed to be the main mechanism for diffraction efficiency enhancement. The combined effect of pyroelectric fields and charge compensation is analyzed and used for the explanation of the observed phenomena
Surface Plasmon Polariton Excitation in Metallic Layer Via Surface Relief Gratings in Photoactive Polymer Studied by the Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method
We performed numerical investigations of surface plasmon excitation and propagation in structures made of a photochromic polymer layer deposited over a metal surface using the finite-difference time-domain method. We investigated the process of light coupling into surface plasmon polariton excitation using surface relief gratings formed on the top of a polymer layer and compared it with the coupling via rectangular ridges grating made directly in the metal layer. We also performed preliminary studies on the influence of refractive index change of photochromic polymer on surface plasmon polariton propagation conditions
The postmastectomy pain syndrome: an epidemiological study on the prevalence of chronic pain after surgery for breast cancer
The prevalence of the postmastectomy pain syndrome (PMPS) and its clinical characteristics was assessed in a group of patients who had undergone surgery for breast cancer at the Department of Surgery, Odense University Hospital, within the period of 1 May 2003 to 30 April 2004. The study included 258 patients and a reference group of 774 women. A questionnaire was mailed to the patients 1½ year after surgery and to the women in the reference group. The PMPS was defined as pain located in the area of the surgery or ipsilateral arm, present at least 4 days per week and with an average intensity of at least 3 on a numeric rating scale from 0 to 10. The prevalence of PMPS was found to be 23.9%. The odds ratio of developing PMPS was 2.88 (95% confidence interval 1.84–4.51). Significant risk factors were as follows: having undergone breast surgery earlier (OR 8.12), tumour located in the upper lateral quarter (OR 6.48) and young age (OR 1.04). This study shows that, although recent advances in the diagnostic and surgical procedures have reduced the frequency of the more invasive surgical procedures, there still is a considerable risk of developing PMPS after treatment of breast cancer

Surface plasmon resonance-enhanced light interaction in an integrated ormocomp nanowire
An integrated ormocomp nanowire coated with gold metal layer is proposed and its optical characteristics with the effect of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) are studied. The integrated rib-like nanowire has a trapezoidal shape with sidewall angles of 75°. It is coated with 50 nm gold layer to introduce the SPR and enhance the evanescent field in the sensing region located at the dielectric/metal interface. The possible field modes, the normalized power confinement, and the SPR peak position of the nanowire are studied over the wavelength and the metal thickness by using the full-vectorial H-field FEM in quasi-TM mode. The attenuation coefficient of the nanowire, the SPR peak wavelength, and the wavelength shift is experimentally extracted for three different cladding materials. The redshift of the supermode coupling between the dielectric mode and the anti-symmetric supermode is observed with the higher cladding-index and larger metal thickness. The improvement of the power confinement in the sensing region with the SPR effect is ten times (10×) better than a previous similar study
Risk factors for moderate and severe persistent pain in patients undergoing total knee and hip arthroplasty : a prospective predictive study
Persistent post-surgical pain (PPSP) is a major clinical problem with significant individual, social and health care costs. The aim of this study was to examine the joint role of demographic, clinical and psychological risk factors in the development of moderate and severe PPSP after Total Knee and Hip Arthroplasty (TKA and THA, respectively). This was a prospective study wherein a consecutive sample of 92 patients were assessed 24 hours before (T1), 48 hours after (T2) and 4-6 months (T3) after surgery. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of moderate and severe levels of PPSP. Four to six months after TKA and THA, 54 patients (58.7%) reported none or mild pain (Numerical Rating Scale: NRS 3). In the final multivariate hierarchical logistic regression analyses, illness representations concerning the condition leading to surgery (osteoarthritis), such as a chronic timeline perception of the disease, emerged as a significant predictor of PPSP. Additionally, post-surgical anxiety also showed a predictive role in the development of PPSP. Pre-surgical pain was the most significant clinical predictive factor and, as expected, undergoing TKA was associated with greater odds of PPSP development than THA. The findings on PPSP predictors after major joint arthroplasties can guide clinical practice in terms of considering cognitive and emotional factors, together with clinical factors, in planning acute pain management before and after surgery. This work was supported by a Project grant (PTDC/SAU-NEU/108557/2008) and by a PhD grant (SFRH/BD/36368/2007) from the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology, COMPETE and FEDER.
