OJS Software Workshop Report
This report summarizes the achievements of the OJS community members from Germany and Switzerland in the OJS Workshop in Heidelberg University Library, Germany from February 20 and 21, 2020. Main goal of the workshop was to share knowledge and challenges, conceptualize and document problem solving suggestions and collectively develop software in and around OJS. Participants worked on a variety of subjects including data import/export plugins, search functionality, containerization, long-time archiving and XML workflows in and around OJS and OMP.
The workshop is a continuation of fruitful meetings within the German OJS user and developer community under auspices of OJS-de.net networ
Evaluating Microcontrollers for Automated Biodiversity Monitoring Tools in Citizen Science
Nowadays, ecosystems and their diversity of species are more threatened than ever before. Large-scale data is needed to make biodiversity loss comprehensible for society and appropriate course of action identifiable for policymakers. Obtaining such series of data requires an immense effort in terms of time, space and the resulting financial outlay for research. Novel approaches demonstrate how tools that combine multi-sensor IoT devices and AI can be used by citizen scientists to generate the required data while minimising the overall, as well as the individual effort. A crucial part of these approaches is the choice of the microcontroller, which is key for the synergy of combining the different disciplines. Based on a literature review and an evaluation of expert knowledge, we show what criteria should be considered when selecting a microcontroller for projects in this application domain.
This includes criteria related to hardware (CPU, I/O, Memory, Wireless Connectivity) and software (Libraries, Programming Language), as well as criteria associated with the microcontroller in general (Availability, Costs, Execution Time, Open Source, Power, Reliability, Size, Weather Resistance). We apply these criteria exemplary to the evaluation of microcontrollers in a bird observation use case. In this review, the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W proves to be an impressive alternative to the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 2GB RAM (chosen as the standard in previous research), with the XIAO ESP32S3 (Sense) being an attractive option likewise, depending on the specific project requirements and the use case.
The structure of this repository and its contents are explained for each directory in the README.md
Wie divers ist mein Garten? Workshop 1.
At a workshop, smart multi-sensor feeders for birds, which were developed in the scope of the project "How diverse is my garden?", were assembled by citizens. Further information concerning the project is available at https://www.wiediversistmeingarten.org.
This survey collected demographic data about the participants, information about their gardens, and interests in gardening and IoT. Additionally, participants were asked specific questions about the workshop. For this purpose, they were asked to self-assess on the System Usability Scale and to use the NASA Task Load Index to assess their workload during the workshop in three categories for assembly (wood, technology, installation). The general questions and the System Usability Scale were recorded using the survey tool ArcGIS Survey123 from esri, while the three questionnaires concerning the NASA Task Load Index were filled out by hand.
In this repository you can find the survey as PDF file (Survey.pdf) and the results collected in a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet file (Results.xlsm)
Geospatial Metadata for Discovery in Scholarly Publishing
Many scientific articles are related to specific regions of the Earth. The connection is often implicit, although geospatial metadata has been shown to have positive effects, such as detecting biases in research coverage or enhancing discovery of research. Scholarly communication platforms lack an explicit modeling of geospatial metadata. In this work, we report a novel approach to integrate well-defined geospatial metadata into Open Journal Systems (OJS). Authors can create complex geometries to represent the related location(s) or region(s) for their submission and define the relevant time period. They are assisted by an interactive map and a gazetteer to capture high quality coordinates as well as a matching textual description with high usability. The geospatial metadata is published within the article pages using semantic tags, integrated in standardized publication metadata, and shown on maps. Thereby, the geoOJS plugin facilitates indexing by search engines, can improve accessibility, and provides a foundation for more powerful map-based discovery of research articles across journals.
