    Grain Marketing in South Vietnam

    No full text
Excerpts: Vietnam has traditionally been deficit in wheat and feed grains and, since 1964, has also imported rice. Use of new, high-yielding rice varieties is dramatically increasing, however, and feed grain production is expanding to meet a growing demand. These production increases create problems for the marketing system, particularly as Vietnam works to again become an exporter rather than an importer of rice. Consequently, this study to recommend improvements in the grain marketing system was undertaken as a part of a larger U.S. Department of Agriculture project in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development. This report on recommendations for improving the grain marketing system includes: (1) a description of the system and analyses of its weaknesses, (2) recommendations for changing the current system over time so that it will meet Vietnam's projected needs, (3) suggestions on how to initiate the changes and when they might be most appropriate, and (4) cost coefficients relating to grain drying, threshing, storage, and processing which were required for a production-distribution model being developed in another phase of the USDA-USAID Vietnam project

Oil Content Analysis of Sunflower by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Solvent Extraction, and Near-Infrared Reflectance: A Cost Study

    No full text
Excerpts from the report: The Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) is in the process of evaluating the need for federal standards for sunflower. If standards are developed, oil should be considered as a factor for determining sunflower quality. The information contained in this study will be useful in determining the feasibility and cost of various methods of oil determinations. This report should also provide useful guidelines for anyone in the grain industry considering investment in oil determination apparatus. Grain producers, handlers, merchandisers, and laboratories concerned with oil content testing can use this information to plan improvement of their specific operations and their profit. Cost estimates indicate that using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and near-infrared reflectance (NIR) instruments to measure oil content of sunflower is both practical and advantageous over solvent extraction (SE) procedures in most cases. Operating procedures for both the NMR and NIR are simple and there is no use of hazardous solvents as required by SE. Previous studies have shown a high positive correlation between NMR and SE determinations

The U.S. Cash Grain Trade: Participants, Transactions, and Information Sources, 1974

The commercial cash grain market in the United States is dispersed; most sales are made to buyers located away from the traditional terminals. The market primarily involves contracts for deferred delivery entered verbally by telephone and followed by written confirmation. The typical country elevator sells to only a few buyers. It relies upon telephone contact with them along with radio and teletype reports of futures prices, as sources of information for pricing decisions. Much of the basic information needed by traders is assembled in USDA's Grain Market News and distributed to users through commercial commodity news services
