    Revolutionary Education: A Modern Synthesis of John Dewey\u27s Evolutionary Philosophy and Educational Theory

    John Dewey was one of the first philosophers who intentionally used the principles of evolution to produce his perspective. He was also the foremost educational theorist of a generation. In both fields, he was a pragmatist, and he sought to lay waste to the dualisms that prevented progress. It is therefore ironic that he erected an artificial wall between the evolutionary thought that pervaded his writings on philosophy, psychology, and even art, and his works on education. I argue in this dissertation that the true power of Dewey would come through the synthesis of his evolutionary and educational thoughts. Using Dewey’s works and the trajectory of his career as a template, I identify three key problems in education that Dewey needed to solve for his vision of education to align with his evolutionary philosophy. The first problem is that of the separation between subject and method, the second is from where education’s direction should derive, and the third seeks to achieve balance between the concrete and abstract knowledge that is taught in the classroom. Following Dewey’s model of using various disciplines to inform his reasoning, I draw upon research in fields that include cognitive ethology, neuroscience, anthropology, and archaeology in my quest solve Dewey’s aforementioned problems. In the dissertation’s final chapter, I conclude that the vehicle for the success of Dewey’s evolutionary educational philosophy will be a classroom suffused with art and science, or more broadly, invention and inquiry. This conclusion aligns with some of the recent movements in education, and that provides me with hope. It is time for John Dewey to be revisited. We need the change in education to be not just about a revolution, but also about evolution

    The Nonlinear Dynamic Conversion of Analog Signals into Excitation Patterns

    Local periodic perturbations induce frequency-dependent propagation waves in an excitable spatio-temporally chaotic system. We show how segments of noise-contaminated and chaotic perturbations induce characteristic sequences of excitations in the model system. Using a set of tuned excitable systems, it is possible to characterize signals by their spectral composition of excitation pattern.     Webteaching: sequencing of subject matter in relation to prior knowledge of pupils

    Two experiments are discussed in which the sequencing procedure of webteaching is compared with a linear sequence for the presentation of text material.\ud \ud In the first experiment variations in the level of prior knowledge of pupils were studied for their influence on the sequencing mode of text presentation. Prior knowledge greatly reduced the effect of the size of sequencing procedures.\ud \ud In the second experiment pupils with a low level of prior knowledge studied a text, following either a websequence or a linear sequence. Webteaching was superior to linear teaching on a number of dependent variables. It is concluded that webteaching is an effective sequencing procedure in those cases where substantial new learning is required

    The interpretation of mu suppression as an index of mirror neuron activity: past, present and future

    Mu suppression studies have been widely used to infer the activity of the human mirror neuron system (MNS) in a number of processes, ranging from action understanding, language, empathy and the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Although mu suppression is enjoying a resurgence of interest, it has a long history. This review aimed to revisit mu’s past, and examine its recent use to investigate MNS involvement in language, social processes and ASDs. Mu suppression studies have largely failed to produce robust evidence for the role of the MNS in these domains. Several key potential shortcomings with the use and interpretation of mu suppression, documented in the older literature and highlighted by more recent reports, are explored here

    A silent gigantic solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura: case report

    Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is a rare mesenchymal tumor, representing less than 5% of all neoplasms associated with the pleura. A 57-year-old man had general malaise without chest symptoms for 1 month. A chest roentgenogram and computed tomography showed a giant mass in the left thorax. Although the tumor compressed the descending aorta and other mediastinal structures strongly, thereby shifting them to the right side, the patient had no symptoms except malaise. The tumor was successfully resected via two separate thoracotomies. The tumor was measured (20 cm Ă— 19 cm Ă— 15 cm) and weighed (2150 g). The tumor was histologically and immunohistochemically diagnosed as benign. Although SFT is benign, a long follow-up period is essential as even patients with complete resection are at risk of recurrence many years after surgery

    Self generated randomness, defect wandering and viscous flow in stripe glasses

    We show that the competition between interactions on different length scales, as relevant for the formation of stripes in doped Mott insulators, can cause a glass transition in a system with no explicitly quenched disorder. We analytically determine a universal criterion for the emergence of an exponentially large number of metastable configurations that leads to a finite configurational entropy and a landscape dominated viscous flow. We demonstrate that glassines is unambiguously tied to a new length scale which characterizes the typical length over which defects and imperfections in the stripe pattern are allowed to wander over long times.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figure

    Hunting the eagle killer: A cyanobacterial neurotoxin causes vacuolar myelinopathy

    Vacuolar myelinopathy is a fatal neurological disease that was initially discovered during a mysterious mass mortality of bald eagles in Arkansas in the United States. The cause of this wildlife disease has eluded scientists for decades while its occurrence has continued to spread throughout freshwater reservoirs in the southeastern United States. Recent studies have demonstrated that vacuolar myelinopathy is induced by consumption of the epiphytic cyanobacterial species Aetokthonos hydrillicola growing on aquatic vegetation, primarily the invasive Hydrilla verticillata. Here, we describe the identification, biosynthetic gene cluster, and biological activity of aetokthonotoxin, a pentabrominated biindole alkaloid that is produced by the cyanobacterium A. hydrillicola. We identify this cyanobacterial neurotoxin as the causal agent of vacuolar myelinopathy and discuss environmental factors-especially bromide availability-that promote toxin production

    Mental states as macrostates emerging from brain electrical dynamics

    Psychophysiological correlations form the basis for different medical and scientific disciplines, but the nature of this relation has not yet been fully understood. One conceptual option is to understand the mental as “emerging” from neural processes in the specific sense that psychology and physiology provide two different descriptions of the same system. Stating these descriptions in terms of coarser- and finer-grained system states (macro- and microstates), the two descriptions may be equally adequate if the coarse-graining preserves the possibility to obtain a dynamical rule for the system. To test the empirical viability of our approach, we describe an algorithm to obtain a specific form of such a coarse-graining from data, and illustrate its operation using a simulated dynamical system. We then apply the method to an electroencephalographic recording, where we are able to identify macrostates from the physiological data that correspond to mental states of the subject

    The influence of methylphenidate on the power spectrum of ADHD children – an MEG study

    BACKGROUND: The present study was dedicated to investigate the influence of Methylphenidate (MPH) on cortical processing of children who were diagnosed with different subtypes of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As all of the previous studies investigating power differences in different frequency bands have been using EEG, mostly with a relatively small number of electrodes our aim was to obtain new aspects using high density magnetoencephalography (MEG). METHODS: 35 children (6 female, 29 male) participated in this study. Mean age was 11.7 years (± 1.92 years). 17 children were diagnosed of having an Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder of the combined type (ADHDcom, DSM IV code 314.01); the other 18 were diagnosed for ADHD of the predominantly inattentive type (ADHDin, DSM IV code 314.0). We measured the MEG during a 5 minute resting period with a 148-channel magnetometer system (MAGNES™ 2500 WH, 4D Neuroimaging, San Diego, USA). Power values were averaged for 5 bands: Delta (D, 1.5–3.5 Hz), Theta (T, 3.5–7.5 Hz), Alpha (A, 7.5–12.5 Hz), Beta (B, 12.5–25 Hz) and Global (GL, 1.5–25 Hz).). Additionally, attention was measured behaviourally using the D2 test of attention with and without medication. RESULTS: The global power of the frequency band from 1.5 to 25 Hz increased with MPH. Relative Theta was found to be higher in the left hemisphere after administration of MPH than before. A positive correlation was found between D2 test improvement and MPH-induced power changes in the Theta band over the left frontal region. A linear regression was computed and confirmed that the larger the improvement in D2 test performance, the larger the increase in Theta after MPH application. CONCLUSION: Main effects induced by medication were found in frontal regions. Theta band activity increased over the left hemisphere after MPH application. This finding contradicts EEG results of several groups who found lower levels of Theta power after MPH application. As relative Theta correlates with D2 test improvement we conclude that MEG provide complementary and therefore important new insights to ADHD
