Confirmation and not Revelation: The Radical Imagination and Visions for the Future

    Get PDF
The imagination is not a foil to reality, but holds potential for re-envisioning an existing one. The term “radical” in radical imagination implies action. We cannot just imagine and stop there. In order for the imagination to become a tool for (personal/ communal/ global) liberation, it needs to be paired with action. There is no such thing as the “standard” or the “conventional” because it is constructed by those in power. Because of this, the radical imagination has existed for years in the language of the oppressed. Drawing from Black and Indigenous thought and practice, personal experience and work, we can see how the radical imagination is born out of necessity. There is no one way of imagining so this is a collection of various imaginations

Fundamental Properties, Activity, and Planet-Hosting Potential of Young Suns Near Earth

In this dissertation, we conduct a census and assessment of the nearest young Sun-like stars and investigate the potential for finding giant planets orbiting spotted stars using the radial velocity (RV) method at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Based in part on new spectroscopic measurements conducted here, we have assembled a complete list of 129 young (\u3c150 \u3eMyr), nearby Sun-like stars and their fundamental parameters, including rotational and multiplicity information. We also provide a statistical analysis of their stellar parameters, including projected rotational velocity and inclination. Sixteen of these stars have no close companions and have low projected rotational velocities (vsini/s) that are ideal for precision RV planet searches. Seven of these rotate nearly edge-on and are ideal targets for upcoming transiting planet searches, assuming low obliquity. We conduct precision RV planet search of 7 young Sun-like stars using the TRES spectrograph, mounted on the 1.5-m Tillinghast Reflector at the Fred L. Whipple Observatory, and with the SOPHIE spectrograph, mounted on the 1.93-m Telescope at the Observatoire de Haute Provence; we achieve a precision of 10 m/s for both. Four stars are identified as having larger RV variations that are periodic, possibly caused by an orbiting companion. However, the RV variations are correlated with asymmetries in the spectral absorption features, which instead suggests that the variations are caused by spots. Nevertheless our observations provide new independent measures of the rotation periods of these stars. Through this analysis we tentatively confirm the planetary companion around BD+20 1790 in the presence of activity. We additionally investigate the use of comparing red orders of the optical spectrum to the blue orders in order to distinguish spots from planets; we find that this method can be effective for observations that span the full wavelength range of the optical. We also investigate our detection limits at optical wavelengths and find that we are sensitive to over 90% of short period giant planets. Next, we assemble the stellar jitter measurements of our stars with previous studies of all Sun-like stars younger than 1 Gyr to investigate how stellar jitter declines with stellar age. We find that stellar jitter decreases with stellar age as t^(0.53±0.13), similar to the relationship between stellar rotation period and stellar age. The implication is that it will be diffcult to find planets orbiting stars younger than 100 Myr without using techniques that mitigate star spot noise. Furthermore, we present a near-infrared RV search for giant planets orbiting 8 stars observed with CSHELL at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). Because of the limited wavelength coverage (29 ̊A) and older (1980s) detector technology, the achieved precision of 200 m/s inhibits finding the majority of exoplanets, but is nevertheless sufficient to identify short-period brown dwarfs for these stars. We also analyze our detection limits at IR wavelengths and find that we are only sensitive to roughly 50% of short period giant planets. Finally, we present a new orbital solution for V835 Her, a spectroscopic binary with a 3 day orbital period

A Narrative Inquiry to Explore the Connection Between Gender and Discipline in Grades Pre-K–8

Because behavioral discipline can impact children’s development, it is important to ensure that educators work in fair and unbiased ways with all children, across gender, race, and other groups. Biased disciplining of children’s behavior in classrooms can occur as micro-aggressions (McCabe, 2009), sometimes counter to what educators may believe about their own behavior. As a means of raising awareness of gender-biased treatment in classrooms, this thesis involved narrating – a dynamic activity that elicits accounts of events – and thus as a means of reflecting on behavior in everyday practices. Educators anonymously completed a questionnaire requesting narratives of various disciplinary situations they have encountered. The goal of gathering this data was to begin a database of educator-reported gender-focused events, to analyze the narratives, and, based on the analysis, create a professional development curriculum for educators to use to improve their own practice. The narrative analysis identified patterns of how the educators described problematic behaviors, student genders (via names and pronouns), student dress code violations, and student name-calling. The results indicate that educators characterized male and female students differently in disciplinary practices, in the descriptive language used, and used different disciplinary procedures. Examples of the analyzed differences were that female students were more often explained the rationale behind their discipline or negative behavior than male students and the majority of narratives about dress code included female student protagonists, in which sexuality is emphasized specifically in one narrative. Based on the research presented in Chapters 1 and 2, Chapter 3 presents a professional development program offering educators some guidance on identifying gender biases and related manifestations in classroom discipline practices

Public pension funds and community investing in New York City

Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2013.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 91-97).Public pension funds are increasingly investing in cities. On the one hand, this appears as a positive development, as an organization traditionally based on exclusionary membership shares its benefits with the larger society. On the other hand, that this is occurring in the context of a disintegrating social contract could be a troubling feature, where private citizens are subsidizing their communities in the absence of state support. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "social contract" as "an actual or hypothetical agreement among the members of an organized society.. .that defines and limits the rights and duties of each." The past thirty years in U.S. history have seen a drastic deterioration in the tacit social contract binding the State, Capital and Labor. Transformations affecting these three actors have re-shaped their interactions and bargaining power. Through a discussion of the Varieties of Capitalism and Institutional Change literatures, the first objective of this paper is to make the case that community investing by pension funds is an institution (broadly defined) that has emerged in part because of the historic-economic forces driving the disintegration of the social contract: financialization, neoliberalism, and the decline of the labor movement. The second objective of this paper is to address the following research questions at the city level: What is the relationship between community investing by pension funds and the changing roles of Capital, Labor, and the State? How, in turn, does the design and organization of these institutions impact their ability to influence this relationship? This research finds that pension fund capitalism in New York City may both blunt and obscure the impacts of the weakened social contract. The pension funds could possibly strengthen the position of labor and increase benefits to communities if they incorporated opportunities for learning and capacity building into their programs.by Nicole A. Patronage Politics and Clientelism in Housing Welfare: The Case of Gawad Kalinga (GK) Villages in Parañaque City, The Philippines

Patronage politics has become a defining charac-teristic of the Philippine political landscape. Clientelism, a form of patronage, is often studied as disadvantageous in governance and democratic consolidation. While the patron-client framework remains the most influential among schools of thought that explain Philippine politics, transforma-tions in a clientelist exchange are evident given changes in political, cultural and economic settings. Using this frame of new clientelism, we look at and revisit the structure of patronage in the provision of housing welfare in the Philippines, focusing now on the roles of three important actors— the nongov-ernmental organization, the state through the local government and the recipients or beneficiaries— in an urban setting, thus deviating from the traditional conception of patronage and clientelist politics. This relationship of clientelist exchange is presented in our Accomplice-Principal-Accessory (APA) model ofclientelism, with the local government unit of Parañaque City as accomplice, the Gawad Kalinga (GK) as the principal agent, and the recipients or beneficiaries as accessories in the provision of hous-ing welfare

Beginning with a good story is how it can start a good short film. This booklet shows how the process was to do the short film “The cosmic roulette”, beginning with the script creation, the one which is the process soul, it shows the difficulties that appeared during this invention. Likewise, it shows how the creative process for doing the characters, backgrounds, instruments development was, until it arrives to the final render and the complete short film compositing. Finally, it places the small final details, but very important, also known as postproduction, when it develops several aspects like the visual effects, sound effects, and music. On the other hand, it decided to use the 3d technic for several reasons, the first one was since a learning point of view, the objective was to create a 3d short film through investigation, and during the period to find the method for learning how to achieve each step. Another reason more commercial was that today 3d technique is very required, it is very important for an animator, if the animator wants to fallow the production area, to know at less a little bit about this technic. Therefore, in this booklet it shows how long the animation process is, and all that it must investigate in order to achieve a good result.

The objective of this thesis was to determine how Tourism Promotion is related to the Development of Tourism in the Historic Center of Rímac, Year 2020. The reason for carrying out this research is because the Historic Center of Rímac is a place that houses many tourist resources that have a transcendental history or past, but at present the tourist movement is very low, so we want the investigation to serve to help increase tourism demand, providing information that can serve as improvement strategies. Based on the deficient management of tourism promotion, we ask ourselves the following question: What is the relation between Tourism Promotion and Development of Tourism in the Historic Center of Rímac, Year 2020? The investigation is divided into five parts the first chapter, which includes the introduction, we have added information and background that can describe the problematic reality. The second chapter or Theoretical Framework, national and international antecedents were added.
