    Detecting wheels

A \emph{wheel} is a graph made of a cycle of length at least~4 together with a vertex that has at least three neighbors in the cycle. We prove that the problem whose instance is a graph GG and whose question is "does GG contains a wheel as an induced subgraph" is NP-complete. We also settle the complexity of several similar problems

Mobile phone-based joint angle measurement for functional assessment and rehabilitation of proprioception

    Get PDF
International audienceAssessment of joint functional and proprioceptive abilities is essential for balance, posture, and motor control rehabilitation. Joint functional ability refers to the capacity of movement of the joint. It may be evaluated thereby measuring the joint range of motion (ROM). Proprioception can be defined as the perception of the position and of the movement of various body parts in space. Its role is essential in sensorimotor control for movement acuity, joint stability, coordination, and balance. Its clinical evaluation is commonly based on the assessment of the joint position sense (JPS). Both ROM and JPS measurements require estimating angles through goniometer, scoliometer, laser-pointer, and bubble or digital inclinometer. With the arrival of Smartphones, these costly clinical tools tend to be replaced. Beyond evaluation, maintaining and/or improving joint functional and proprioceptive abilities by training with physical therapy is important for long-term management. This review aims to report Smartphone applications used for measuring and improving functional and proprioceptive abilities. It identifies that Smartphone applications are reliable for clinical measurements and are mainly used to assess ROM and JPS. However, there is lack of studies on Smartphone applications which can be used in an autonomous way to provide physical therapy exercises at home

Multi-Modal Framework for Subject-Specific Finite Element Modeling of the Buttocks

    No full text
International audienceIn order to produce high quality personalized FE models, it is necessary to resort to medical imaging and acquire the most relevant possible description of the modeled morphology. Yet building a FE model from a medical data set can be a challenging and time consuming task. To overcome the commonly encountered problems, this paper introduces a "mesh warping" approach chosen for its versatility. A biomechanical finite element model of the buttocks soft tissues is generated for an efficient prevention of pressure ulcers

Regularity of Center of Pressure Trajectories in Expert Gymnasts during Bipedal Closed-Eyes Quiet Standing

We compared postural control of expert gymnasts (G) to that of non-gymnasts (NG) during bipedal closed-eyes quiet standing using conventional and nonlinear dynamical measures of center of foot pressure (COP) trajectories. Earlier findings based on COP classical variables showed that gymnasts exhibited a better control of postural balance but only in demanding stances. We examined whether the effect of expertise in Gymnastic can be uncovered in less demanding stances, from the analysis of the dynamic patterns of COP trajectories. Three dependent variables were computed to describe the subject’s postural behavior: the variability of COP displacements (ACoP), the variability of the COP velocities (VCoP) and the sample entropy of COP (SEnCoP) to quantify COP regularity (i.e., predictability). Conventional analysis of COP trajectories showed that NG and G exhibited similar amount and control of postural sway, as indicated by similar ACoP and VCoP values observed in NG and G, respectively. These results suggest that the specialized balance training received by G may not transfer to less challenging balance conditions such as the bipedal eyes-closed stance condition used in the present experiment. Interestingly, nonlinear dynamical analysis of COP trajectories regarding COP regularity showed that G exhibited more irregular COP fluctuations relative to NG, as indicated by the higher SEnCoP values observed for the G than for the NG. The present results showed that a finer-grained analysis of the dynamic patterns of the COP displacements is required to uncover an effect of gymnastic expertise on postural control in nondemanding postural stance. The present findings shed light on the surplus value in the nonlinear dynamical analysis of COP trajectories to gain further insight into the mechanisms involved in the control of bipedal posture

Biomechanical Modeling to Prevent Ischial Pressure Ulcers

International audienceWith 300,000 paraplegic persons only in France, ischial pressure ulcers represent a major public health issue. They result from the buttocks' soft tissues compression by the bony prominences. Unfortunately, the current clinical techniques, with - in the best case - embedded pressure sensor mats, are insufficient to prevent them because most are due to high internal strains which can occur even with low pressures at the skin surface. Therefore, improving prevention requires using a biomechanical model to estimate internal strains from skin surface pressures. However, the buttocks' soft tissues' stiffness is still unknown. This paper provides a stiffness sensitivity analysis using a finite element model. Different layers with distinct Neo Hookean materials simulate the skin, fat and muscles. With Young moduli in the range [100 - 500 kPa], [25 - 35 kPa], and [80 - 140 kPa] for the skin, fat, and muscles respectively, maximum internal strains reach realistic 50 to 60 % values. The fat and muscle stiffnesses have an important influence on the strain variations, while skin stiffness is less influent. Simulating different sitting postures and changing the muscle thickness also result in a variation in the internal strains

    iBalance-ABF: a Smartphone-Based Audio-Biofeedback Balance System

International audienceThis article proposes an implementation of a Kalman Filter, using inertial sensors of a Smartphone, to estimate 3D angulation of the trunk. The developped system monitors the trunk angular evolution during bipedal stance and helps the user to improve balance through a configurable and integrated auditory-biofeedback loop. A proof-of-concept study was performed to assess the effectiveness of this so-called iBalance-ABF - smartphone-based audio-biofeedback system - in improving balance during bipedal standing. Results showed that young healthy individuals were able to efficiently use ABF on sagittal trunk tilt to improve their balance in the ML direction. These findings suggest that iBalance-ABF system as a Telerehabilitation system which could represent a suitable solution for Ambient Assisted Living technologies

Buttock pressure management of able-bodied people seated on a rigid surface for two hours.

International audienceIt is now well known that deep pressure ulcers are due to excessive pressure intensity (leading to soft tissues internal strains above 50 % for some minutes) and prolonged compression (leading to internal strains above 20 % for about two hours). This paper aims at better understanding why able-bodied individuals put in quite extreme conditions (i.e seated for 2 hours long on a rigid surface) do not get pressure ulcers. Thirty young healthy subjects agreed to stay seated on a rigid surface during two hours while watching a movie. The buttocks/seat interface pressures were recorded by a pressure mapping system
