The Design Studio as a Social Organism and Ecology

The design studio is at the same moment a place, a process, a concept and an ecology. It is a place of negotiation based on both visible and invisible codes of behavior. It is a delicate system at the mercy of the relationships of the inhabitants and their environment. Design teaching and learning within studio practice has been of pedagogic interests from as far back as Dewey (1958), and Schön (1985). Assistant Professor Colin M. Gray points out (2013) that while there has been some research on the role of identity and socialization in the studio (Crysler 1995; Webster 2008) more is needed in both trans-disciplinary and domain specific contexts. For our research we focused particularly on the design studio practice in a collaborative project over a very short five-week period on the Graphic and Digital Design Degree, in order to investigate the group social dynamics within the design studio experience and how that affects the work produced. Our premise is that the design studio acts as an organism and ecology. In order to observe each student group as it builds its own unique design studio through a mix of place and digitality we followed Pink’s (2007) multisensory observational strategy in which we were able to detail a fuller context, as well as what the participants found interesting/difficult and their activities (Heisley and Levy, 1991; Schensul, Schensul and LeCompte, 1999.) We have used a number of visual data collection methods, filming, photographs, diagrams and mapping; with an awareness of 1960s Situationists’ psycho-geographies. We also used more traditional qualitative data such as group meeting notes, social media transcripts, wearable tech data, student feedback and audio recordings

Laser Cooling and Trapping of Atomic Strontium for Ultracold Atoms Physics, High-Precision Spectroscopy and Quantum Sensors

This review describes the production of atomic strontium samples at ultra-low temperature and at high phase-space density, and their possible use for physical studies and applications. We describe the process of loading a magneto-optical trap from an atomic beam and preparing the sample for high precision measurements. Particular emphasis is given to the applications of ultracold Sr samples, spanning from optical frequency metrology to force sensing at micrometer scale.Comment: 34 pages, 19 figure

Modulation of the One Health Approach to Tackle Brucellosis in Buffaloes and Cattle in Two Italian Territories with Different Characteristics

The new European Union animal health law and its rule concerning brucellosis in cattle and buffaloes The authors examine the latest European Union (EU) rules concerning eradication and surveillance of brucellosis and animal infectious diseases of EU concern. The Italian rules concerning brucellosis in cattle and buffaloes Italy is included in the EU co-financed compulsory eradication and surveillance programmes for brucellosis in cattle and in buffaloes in the frame of the EU and the related Italian laws, which allowed reaching the Brucellosis Free status without vaccination (former "Officially Brucellosis Free - OBF" status) in the majority of the northern and middle Italian Regions and in some middle and southern Provinces included in Regions where the infection persists. Epidemiology of brucellosis in the EU and in Italy In the Italian Province of Caserta, the highest prevalence of brucellosis in buffaloes is reported; in 2017-2021, a total of 314 outbreaks occurred, in which 39,163 heads tested positive. Here, brucellosis is threatening not only human health and the widespread buffaloes breeding but also the important satellite activities concerning the Protected Designation of Origin (P.O.D.) cheese “Mozzarella di Bufala Campana". The authors also discuss the reemerged brucellosis in cattle in the Molise Region, which despite bordering the Province of Caserta, shows different hydrographic, orographic, and breeding characteristics. In Molise, the reemerged brucellosis had a very different epidemiological course, which allowed it to limit the adoption of One Health measures. The One Health approach to tackle brucellosis in buffaloes In order to tackle brucellosis in Campania Region and in its Province of Caserta, the One Health approach has been predisposed through strict control of animal health, human health, and the environment. Cesarean scar pregnancy treated by artery embolisation combined with diode laser: a novel approach for a rare disease

Cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy which represents a consequence of a previous cesarean section. It is associated with major maternal morbidity and mortality and has potential implications on future fertility. Because of possible serious complications, CSP should be swiftly diagnosed and treated. There is no management protocol for this rare, life-threatening condition, and each patient should be evaluated individually. Several types of conservative treatment have been used to treat cesarean scar pregnancy: dilation and curettage (D&C), excision of trophoblastic tissues, local or systemic administration of methotrexate, bilateral hypogastric artery ligation, and selective uterine artery embolization with curettage and/or methotrexate administration. In our study we present a cesarean scar pregnancy of a 40-year-old woman who was treated with angiographic uterine artery embolization (UAE) followed by hysteroscopic diode laser resection. Our combined UAE-hysteroscopic laser surgery appears to offer an effective, safe, and minimally invasive surgical treatment
