Self-consistent cluster CPA methods and the nested CPA theory
The coherent potential approximation, CPA, is a useful tool to treat systems
with disorder. Cluster theories have been proposed to go beyond the translation
invariant single-site CPA approximation and include some short range
correlations. In this framework one can also treat simultaneously diagonal
disorder (in the site-diagonal elements of the Hamiltonian) and non-diagonal
disorder (in the bond energies). It proves difficult to obtain reasonable
results, free of non-analyticities, for lattices of dimension higher than one
(D>1). We show electronic structure results obtained for a Hubbard model,
treated in mean field approximation, on a square lattice and a simple cubic
lattice, with the simultaneous inclusion of diagonal and non-diagonal disorder.
We compare the results obtained using three different methods to treat the
problem: a self-consistent 2-site cluster CPA method, the
Blackman-Esterling-Berk single-site like extension of the CPA and a nested CPA
approach.Comment: 5 pages + 2 figures, to appear in Physica B. Presented at the SCES'99

Critical structure factor in Ising systems
We perform a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation of the three-dimensional
Ising model on simple cubic lattices of size L^3 with L=128 and 256. We
determine the corresponding structure factor (Fourier transform of the
two-point function) and compare it with several approximations and with
experimental results. We also compute the turbidity as a function of the
momentum of the incoming radiation, focusing in particular on the deviations
from the Ornstein-Zernicke expression of Puglielli and Ford.Comment: 16 page
Critical behavior of the two-dimensional N-component Landau-Ginzburg Hamiltonian with cubic anisotropy
We study the two-dimensional N-component Landau-Ginzburg Hamiltonian with
cubic anisotropy. We compute and analyze the fixed-dimension perturbative
expansion of the renormalization-group functions to four loops. The relations
of these models with N-color Ashkin-Teller models, discrete cubic models,
planar model with fourth order anisotropy, and structural phase transition in
adsorbed monolayers are discussed. Our results for N=2 (XY model with cubic
anisotropy) are compatible with the existence of a line of fixed points joining
the Ising and the O(2) fixed points. Along this line the exponent has
the constant value 1/4, while the exponent runs in a continuous and
monotonic way from 1 to (from Ising to O(2)). For N\geq 3 we find a
cubic fixed point in the region , which is marginally stable or
unstable according to the sign of the perturbation. For the physical relevant
case of N=3 we find the exponents and at the cubic
transition.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure
Organic Superconductors: when correlations and magnetism walk in
This survey provides a brief account for the start of organic
superconductivity motivated by the quest for high Tc superconductors and its
development since the eighties'. Besides superconductivity found in 1D organics
in 1980, progresses in this field of research have contributed to better
understand the physics of low dimensional conductors highlighted by the wealth
of new remarkable properties. Correlations conspire to govern the low
temperature properties of the metallic phase. The contribution of
antiferromagnetic fluctuations to the interchain Cooper pairing proposed by the
theory is borne out by experimental investigations and supports
supercondutivity emerging from a non Fermi liquid background. Quasi one
dimensional organic superconductors can therefore be considered as simple
prototype systems for the more complex high Tc materials.Comment: 41 pages, 21 figures to be published in Journal of Superconductivity

Macroscopic description of the external and middle ear of paca (Cuniculus paca Linnaeus, 1766)
Abstract: Paca (Cuniculus paca), one of the largest rodents of the Brazilian fauna, has inherent characteristics of its species which can conribute as a new option for animal experimantation. As there is a growing demand for suitable experimental models in audiologic and otologic surgical research, the gross anatomy and ultrastructural ear of this rodent have been analyzed and described in detail. Fifteen adult pacas from the Wild Animals Sector herd of Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, Unesp-Jaboticabal, were used in this study. After anesthesia and euthanasia, we evaluated the entire composition of the external ear, registering and ddescribing the details; the temporal region was often dissected for a better view and detailing of the tympanic bulla which was removed and opened to expose the ear structures analyzed mascroscopically and ultrastructurally. The ear pinna has a triangular and concave shape with irregular ridges and sharp apex. The external auditory canal is winding in its path to the tympanic mebrane. The tympanic bulla is is on the back-bottom of the skull. The middle ear is formed by a cavity region filled with bone and membranous structures bounded by the tympanic membrane and the oval and round windows. The tympanic membrane is flat and seals the ear canal. The anatomy of the paca ear is similar to the guinea pig and from the viewpoint of experimental model has major advantages compared with the mouse ear
Measurement of the νe and total 8B solar neutrino fluxes with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory phase-III data set
This paper details the solar neutrino analysis of the 385.17-day phase-III data set acquired by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). An array of 3He proportional counters was installed in the heavy-water target to measure precisely the rate of neutrino-deuteron neutral-current interactions. This technique to determine the total active 8B solar neutrino flux was largely independent of the methods employed in previous phases. The total flux of active neutrinos was measured to be 5.54-0.31+0.33(stat.)-0.34+0.36(syst.)×106 cm-2 s-1, consistent with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of solar and reactor neutrino mixing parameters yielded the best-fit values of Δm2=7.59-0.21+0.19×10 -5eV2 and θ=34.4-1.2+1.3degrees
