The influence of sport participation on youth binge drinking.

This dissertation is an examination of the influence of sport participation on binge drinking among African-American youth. The dissertation is divided into five chapters, covering introduction, literature review, methodology, results, and conclusion. Chapter one describes the problem of binge drinking among African-American youth, focusing on the many deleterious consequences and rates of use. It also examines the problem theoretically through the criminological theories of social bond theory and social learning theory to argue for an understanding of binge drinking by African-American youth. Chapter two examines similar work by previous authors and further details our theoretical premises and their relation to substance use and sports participation by youth. Chapter three describes the data, sample, coding of variables, and, analytic techniques that will be carried out. Specifically, a nationally representative sample of African-Americans were surveyed regarding their participation in various sports, demographic characteristics, and their experiences with school disciplinary practices. Through logistic regression analysis, these variables are expected to predict variation in binge drinking behaviors among African-American youth. Chapter four will describe the anticipated results of the data analysis. Chapter five links these anticipated findings to our theoretical premises and provides policy implications

Police Deception: A Survey of EKU Students

Abstract Police deception has been both good and bad for society. Deceptive interrogation is an effective method of gaining confessions and convictions. It is also dangerous in that it raises the potential for false confessions, damages police-citizen relationships, damages case strength, and encourages lying in other aspects of policing. The purpose of the study was to gauge the opinions of students regarding deceptive interrogation by police. A survey was administered to a purposive sample of undergraduates at Eastern Kentucky University. The survey asked questions regarding the students\u27 level of approval toward different scenarios of police deception. It also asked some general questions regarding the police and lying. The sample\u27s average responses indicated negative to neutral feelings of police use of deception. In no circumstance did the sample\u27s average responses approve of deception by police

Prevalence and Trends of Depression among Cyberbullied Adolescents - Youth Risk Behavior Survey, United States, 2011 – 2019

The difference in depression between non-cyberbullied and cyberbullied youth is not well understood. To describe the prevalence and trends in depression among cyberbullied adolescents. Using cross-sectional, nationally-representative data from the YRBS 2011 - 2019, we estimated the prevalence and trends of depression across the total years and within cyberbullied groups that include biological sex and race and ethnicity among adolescents. The results indicated the prevalence of depression was higher among those that were cyberbullied. Within the cyberbullied groups the total trend was higher than the non-cyberbullied, females had a higher prevalence of depression than males, and Hispanics had a higher prevalence of depression than blacks. Further, the results showed the trends for cyberbullied, males, females, whites, and blacks had significant linear increases, but Hispanics remained stable. Further, the non-cyberbullied trend was quadratic where there was no change from 2011-2015, but an increase occurred between 2015-2019. Depression is high among adolescents. It appears to be increasing among individuals that are cyberbullied, with the exception of Hispanics. These results are discussed with programming recommendations

Evidence of Titan's Climate History from Evaporite Distribution

Water-ice-poor, 5-μ\mum-bright material on Saturn's moon Titan has previously been geomorphologically identified as evaporitic. Here we present a global distribution of the occurrences of the 5-μ\mum-bright spectral unit, identified with Cassini's Visual Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) and examined with RADAR when possible. We explore the possibility that each of these occurrences are evaporite deposits. The 5-μ\mum-bright material covers 1\% of Titan's surface and is not limited to the poles (the only regions with extensive, long-lived surface liquid). We find the greatest areal concentration to be in the equatorial basins Tui Regio and Hotei Regio. Our interpretations, based on the correlation between 5-μ\mum-bright material and lakebeds, imply that there was enough liquid present at some time to create the observed 5-μ\mum-bright material. We address the climate implications surrounding a lack of evaporitic material at the south polar basins: if the south pole basins were filled at some point in the past, then where is the evaporite
