    The development of a prototype intelligent user interface subsystem for NASA's scientific database systems

    The National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) has initiated an Intelligent Data Management (IDM) research effort which has as one of its components the development of an Intelligent User Interface (IUI).The intent of the latter is to develop a friendly and intelligent user interface service that is based on expert systems and natural language processing technologies. The purpose is to support the large number of potential scientific and engineering users presently having need of space and land related research and technical data but who have little or no experience in query languages or understanding of the information content or architecture of the databases involved. This technical memorandum presents prototype Intelligent User Interface Subsystem (IUIS) using the Crustal Dynamics Project Database as a test bed for the implementation of the CRUDDES (Crustal Dynamics Expert System). The knowledge base has more than 200 rules and represents a single application view and the architectural view. Operational performance using CRUDDES has allowed nondatabase users to obtain useful information from the database previously accessible only to an expert database user or the database designer

    On the Amplitude of Burst Oscillations in 4U 1636-54: Evidence for Nuclear Powered Pulsars

    We present a study of 581 Hz oscillations observed during a thermonuclear X-ray burst from the low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1636-54 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We argue that the combination of large pulsed amplitudes near burst onset and the spectral evidence for localized emission during the rise strongly supports rotational modulation as the mechanism for the oscillations. We discuss how theoretical interpretation of spin modulation amplitudes, pulse profiles and pulse phase spectroscopy can provide constraints on the masses and radii of neutron stars. We also discuss the implication of these findings for the beat frequency models of kHz X-ray variability in LMXB.Comment: AASTEX Latex, 13 pages including 5 figures.     Seasonal Sediment Migration and Sediment Dynamics on Sandy Point Beach, San Salvador Island, Bahamas

    A study of the dynamics of Sandy Point Beach along the southwestern corner of San Salvador Island over an eighteen-month period, beginning in June, 1990, has revealed that two seasonal phases of sediment transport are operative. Based primarily on analyses of the grain-size parameters of sand samples collected from the beach in June, 1990, a northerly direction of sediment transport was detected. This is herein termed the Spring/Summer phase of transport, and it results from the energy of waves generated by the prevailing easterly trade winds. Continued profiling of the beach in December, 1990, and January, 1992, revealed that a strong southerly transport direction is dominant during the fall/winter months.The energy for this phase of sediment transport comes from northwesterly storms. It appears that during such events, large amounts of sediment can be moved rapidly toward the southern end of the beach

    Multi-level mapping: Real-time dense monocular SLAM

    We present a method for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) using a monocular camera that is capable of reconstructing dense 3D geometry online without the aid of a graphics processing unit (GPU). Our key contribution is a multi-resolution depth estimation and spatial smoothing process that exploits the correlation between low-texture image regions and simple planar structure to adaptively scale the complexity of the generated keyframe depthmaps to the texture of the input imagery. High-texture image regions are represented at higher resolutions to capture fine detail, while low-texture regions are represented at coarser resolutions for smooth surfaces. The computational savings enabled by this approach allow for significantly increased reconstruction density and quality when compared to the state-of-the-art. The increased depthmap density also improves tracking performance as more constraints can contribute to the pose estimation.
