Parallel Algorithms for Constrained Tensor Factorization via the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers
Tensor factorization has proven useful in a wide range of applications, from
sensor array processing to communications, speech and audio signal processing,
and machine learning. With few recent exceptions, all tensor factorization
algorithms were originally developed for centralized, in-memory computation on
a single machine; and the few that break away from this mold do not easily
incorporate practically important constraints, such as nonnegativity. A new
constrained tensor factorization framework is proposed in this paper, building
upon the Alternating Direction method of Multipliers (ADMoM). It is shown that
this simplifies computations, bypassing the need to solve constrained
optimization problems in each iteration; and it naturally leads to distributed
algorithms suitable for parallel implementation on regular high-performance
computing (e.g., mesh) architectures. This opens the door for many emerging big
data-enabled applications. The methodology is exemplified using nonnegativity
as a baseline constraint, but the proposed framework can more-or-less readily
incorporate many other types of constraints. Numerical experiments are very
encouraging, indicating that the ADMoM-based nonnegative tensor factorization

What do faculty and students really think about e-books?
Purpose - The purpose of this article is to report on a large-scale survey that was carried Out to assess academic users' awareness, perceptions and existing levels of use of e-books. The survey also seeks to find out about the purposes to which electronic books were put, and to obtain an understanding of the most effective library marketing and communication channels.Design/methodology/approach - An e-mail invitation to participate in the survey was distributed to all UCL staff and students (approximately 27,000) in November 2006, and 1,818 completions were received, an effective response rate of at least 6.7 per cent. Statistical analyses were carried out on the data using Software Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).Findings - The survey findings point to various ways in which user uptake and acceptance of e-books may be encouraged. Book discovery behaviour, a key issue for publishers and librarians in both print and electronic environments, emerges as a critical focus for service delivery and enhancement.Originality/value - The survey is part of an action research project, CIBER's SuperBook, that will further investigate the issues raised in this initial benchmarking survey using deep log analysis and qualitative methods. The paper partly fills the gap in the literature on e-books which has mainly focused on usage and not the users
Intrusion Detection Systems for Community Wireless Mesh Networks
Wireless mesh networks are being increasingly used to provide affordable network connectivity to communities where wired deployment strategies are either not possible or are prohibitively expensive. Unfortunately, computer networks (including mesh networks) are frequently being exploited by increasingly profit-driven and insidious attackers, which can affect their utility for legitimate use. In response to this, a number of countermeasures have been developed, including intrusion detection systems that aim to detect anomalous behaviour caused by attacks. We present a set of socio-technical challenges associated with developing an intrusion detection system for a community wireless mesh network. The attack space on a mesh network is particularly large; we motivate the need for and describe the challenges of adopting an asset-driven approach to managing this space. Finally, we present an initial design of a modular architecture for intrusion detection, highlighting how it addresses the identified challenges

Medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy: A retrospective review of patient outcomes over 10 years
Objectives: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) has become a well-established treatment for unicompartmental osteoarthritis of the knee. Over the last 30 years, various techniques have been introduced to advance this procedure. The purpose of this study is to review the outcomes of patients who received medial opening wedge HTO over the last ten years (2002-2012) using a modern, low profile, medially based fixation device. In addition, we sought to determine if obese patients had a less favorable outcome than their non-obese counterparts. Methods: Ninety-three patients were identified from a surgical database as having undergone a HTO for medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee with varus mal-alignment. All procedures were performed by one of two fellowship trained orthopedic surgeons from 2002-2012 utilizing a low profile fixation device and identical surgical technique. Minimum follow-up was one year for inclusion in the study. Outcomes were measured using Lysholm and WOMAC scores. Radiographs were evaluated to determine delayed union or non-union at the osteotomy site and surveillance was undertaken to evaluate post operative complications. Results: 93 patients were identified from the database, 63 (70%) were available for follow-up and are included in this analysis. Average follow-up time was 48 months (range 17 to 137). There were 44 males and 19 females. The average age was 45 years old. The average final Lysholm and WOMAC scores were 66.4 (range: 13-100) and 18.6 (range: 0-86) respectively. There was no significant difference in reported Lysholm or WOMAC scores between obese (BMI \u3e30) and non-obese patients (p=.31;p=.69). Complications were as follows: 3 patients required a surgical lysis of adhesions, 2 patients developed an infection, and 1 patient experienced a delayed union. At final follow-up, 18 patients received additional treatment on the affected knee: 11 required removal of symptomatic hardware, 5 received viscosupplementation, 2 underwent a total knee replacement. Conclusion: Low profile, medial based devices used in the setting of HTO is an accepted treatment for unicompartmental osteoarthritis of the knee. At final follow-up, a majority of patients reported positive outcomes and few complications. 18 patients required additional treatment for osteoarthritis. In our analysis, obese patients faired equally as well as their non-obese counterparts, with no significant difference in outcomes scores or complication rate. Survivorship of high tibial osteotomy was excellent in this series, with only 2 patients having undergone total knee replacement at last follow-up. © The Author(s) 2015
Colloids with key-lock interactions: non-exponential relaxation, aging and anomalous diffusion
The dynamics of particles interacting by key-lock binding of attached
biomolecules are studied theoretically. Experimental realizations of such
systems include colloids grafted with complementary single-stranded DNA
(ssDNA), and particles grafted with antibodies to cell-membrane proteins.
Depending on the coverage of the functional groups, we predict two distinct
regimes. In the low coverage localized regime, there is an exponential
distribution of departure times. As the coverage is increased the system enters
a diffusive regime resulting from the interplay of particle desorption and
diffusion. This interplay leads to much longer bound state lifetimes, a
phenomenon qualitatively similar to aging in glassy systems. The diffusion
behavior is analogous to dispersive transport in disordered semiconductors:
depending on the interaction parameters it may range from a finite
renormalization of the diffusion coefficient to anomalous, subdiffusive
behavior. We make connections to recent experiments and discuss the

Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries, Millisecond Radio Pulsars, and the Cosmic Star Formation Rate
We report on the implications of the peak in the cosmic star-formation rate
(SFR) at redshift z ~ 1.5 for the resulting population of low-mass X-ray
binaries(LMXB) and for that of their descendants, the millisecond radio pulsars
(MRP). Since the evolutionary timescales of LMXBs, their progenitors, and their
descendants are thought be significant fractions of the time-interval between
the SFR peak and the present epoch, there is a lag in the turn-on of the LMXB
population, with the peak activity occurring at z ~ 0.5 - 1.0. The peak in the
MRP population is delayed further, occurring at z < 0.5. We show that the
discrepancy between the birthrate of LMXBs and MRPs, found under the assumption
of a stead-state SFR, can be resolved for the population as a whole when the
effects of a time-variable SFR are included. A discrepancy may persist for
LMXBs with short orbital periods, although a detailed population synthesis will
be required to confirm this. Further, since the integrated X-ray luminosity
distribution of normal galaxies is dominated by X-ray binaries, it should show
strong luminosity evolution with redshift. In addition to an enhancement near
the peak (z ~ 1.5) of the SFR due to the prompt turn-on of the relatively
short-lived massive X-ray binaries and young supernova remnants, we predict a
second enhancement by a factor ~10 at a redshift between ~ 0.5 and ~ 1 due to
the delayed turn-on of the LMXB population. Deep X-ray observations of galaxies
out to z ~ 1 by AXAF will be able to observe this enhancement, and, by
determining its shape as a function of redshift, will provide an important new

An AGN Identification for 3EG J2006-2321
We present a multiwavelength analysis of the high-energy gamma-ray source 3EG
J2006-2321. The flux of this source above 100 MeV is shown to be variable on
time scales of days and months. Optical observations and careful examination of
archived radio data indicate that its radio counterpart is PMN J2005-2310, a
flat-spectrum radio quasar with a 5-GHz flux density of 260 mJy. Study of the
optical counterpart indicates a redshift of 0.833 and variable linear
polarization. No X-ray source has been detected near the position of PMN
J2005-2310, but an X-ray upper limit is derived from ROSAT data. This upper
limit provides for a spectral energy distribution with global characteristics
similar to those of known gamma-ray blazars. Taken together, these data
indicate that 3EG J2006-2321, listed as unidentified in the 3rd EGRET Catalog,
is a member of the blazar class of AGN. The 5-GHz radio flux density of this
blazar is the lowest of the 68 EGRET-detected AGN. The fact that EGRET has
detected such a source has implications for unidentified EGRET sources,
particularly those at high latitudes (), many of which may be
