    The articles in this volume originate from papers delivered at the 9th International Conference on Catholic Social Thought and Management Education at De La Salle and Ateneo Universities in Manila, Philippines (February 26–28, 2015). The theme of the conference was “Poverty, Prosperity and the Purpose of Business” within the Catholic social tradition. In attendance were approximately 300 participants representing 22 countries from 80 Catholic colleges and universities. They came from disciplines in management, philosophy, finance, accounting, theology, marketing, economics, and others. There were also leaders from business, many of whom were from the Philippines, who brought their experiences to bear on the conversations. Along with this diversity of education and experience were people of different faith traditions whose moral and spiritual commitments run deep on the importance of mission and identity of Catholic universitie

    Shareholder Engagement and Chevron’s Policy 520 on Human Rights: The Role Played by the United States Jesuit Conference’s “National Jesuit Committee on Investment Responsibility”

    Purpose To demonstrate how the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in the United States through the “National Jesuit Committee on Investment Responsibility” played a significant role as a socially conscious institutional and religious investor in influencing Chevron’s Human Rights Policy 520 and to analyze the factors that contributed to a successful shareholder engagement with the company. Methodology/approach Case study based on firsthand information. Findings Our conclusion offers support for Allen et al.’s (2012) conclusion of legitimacy (credibility) being the dominant force in a successful engagement. We found that coalition-building is a significant moderating variable in increasing shareholder salience. This finding contradicts the study by Gifford (2010). Originality/value of chapter The chapter is based on the actual process of shareholder engagement with Chevron Corporation that led to the human rights policy and is written mainly based on firsthand information

    Coupling of sedimentation and liquid structure: influence on hard sphere nucleation

    The discrepancy in nucleation rate densities between simulated and experimental hard spheres remains staggering and unexplained. Suggestively, more strongly sedimenting colloidal suspensions of hard spheres nucleate much faster than weakly sedimenting systems. In this work we consider firstly the effect of sedimentation on the structure of colloidal hard spheres, by tuning the density mismatch between solvent and colloidal particles. In particular we investigate the effect on the degree of five fold symmetry present. Secondly we study the size of density fluctuations in these experimental systems in comparison to simulations. The density fluctuations are measured by assigning each particle a local density, which is related to the number of particles within a distance of 3.25 particle diameters. The standard deviation of these local densities gives an indication of the fluctuations present in the system. Five fold symmetry is suppressed by a factor of two when sedimentation is induced in our system. Density fluctuations are also increased by a factor of two in experiments compared to simulations. The change in five fold symmetry makes a difference to the expected nucleation rates, but we demonstrate that it is ultimately too small to resolve the discrepancy between experiment and simulation, while the fluctuations are shown to be an artefact of 3d particle tracking.Comment: 8 page

    Tilting Pad Bearing Design.

    Tutorialpg. 179-194The basics of tilting pad bearing design are discussed to include limits of operation for load, speed, and metal temperature. Optimum temperature sensor locations are recommended for self-aligning and nonaligning tilting pads. Tilting pad bearing geometric properties and their influence on bearing and rotordynamics are addressed including the advantages and disadvantages of zero preloaded pads. Also, the advantages of increasing the pad axial length are shown. Example calculations are presented for the tilting pad pivot film thickness which is necessary to determine if the top pads are loaded or unloaded. Tilting pad static shaft sink and clearance measurement techniques are addressed. The equations to calculate normal force and break away torque are derived including an example calculation comparing a tilting pad bearing to a two axial groove bearing. Tilting pad bearing oil flow and temperature rise are included along with a discussion of reduced temperature tilting pad designs

    The Impact of Vascular Complications on Survival of Patients on Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.

    BACKGROUND: There are various factors that can influence the survival of patients receiving venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO). Vascular complications from femoral cannulation are common and are potentially serious. We analyzed the impact of vascular complications on survival of patients receiving VA ECMO. METHODS: Patients supported with VA ECMO by means of femoral cannulation from October 2010 to November 2014 were enrolled in this study. Data were gathered retrospectively by reviewing our institutional database. Patients were separated into two groups depending on the presence of major vascular complications, defined as patients who required surgical intervention. We evaluated predisposing factors for vascular complications and compared survival of patients in each group. RESULTS: There were 84 patients enrolled in the study. The rates of overall ECMO survival and survival to hospital discharge were 60% and 43%, respectively. Major vascular complications requiring surgical intervention were seen in 17 (20%) patients. Ten patients (12%) had compartment syndrome requiring prophylactic fasciotomy, and 10 patients (12%) had bleeding or hematoma requiring surgical exploration. The only significant predisposing factor for vascular complications was the absence of a distal perfusion catheter (odds ratio, 14.8; p = 0.03). The rate of survival to discharge was 18% and 49% in patients with and without vascular complications, respectively (p = 0.02). Vascular complications were an independent factor of significantly worse survival in patients receiving VA ECMO by multivariate analysis (hazard ratio, 2.17; p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Vascular complications negatively affect survival in patients receiving VA ECMO support by means of femoral cannulation. The utilization of a distal perfusion catheter can decrease the incidence of complications

    Complete Enumeration and Properties of Binary Pseudo-Youden Designs PYD(9, 6, 6)

    A binary pseudo -Youden design PYD(9, 6, 6) is a 6 Ă— 6 array in which each cell contains one element from the set V = {1, 2, . . ., 9}, and each element from V occurs 4 times. Every row of the array contains distinct elements and every column contains distinct elements. The rows and columns, when taken together, are pairwise balanced and form a (9, 12, 8, 6, 5)-BIBD. In Preece (1968) and (1976) a total of 345 species of binary PYD(9, 6, 6) were found. Here we complete this enumeration and find 348 species of binary PYD(9, 6, 6). We give a complete set of invariants for these species based upon the numbers of intercalates and anti-intercalates that they contain; and discuss some of their properties. We also show that there are 696 non-isomorphic binary PYD(9, 6, 6), and give a complete set of invariants for these arrays

    Genetic markers in s. Paratyphi c reveal primary adaptation to pigs

    Salmonella enterica with the identical antigenic formula 6,7:c:1,5 can be differentiated biochemically and by disease syndrome. One grouping, Salmonella Paratyphi C, is currently considered a typhoidal serovar, responsible for enteric fever in humans. The human-restricted typhoidal serovars (S. Typhi and Paratyphi A, B and C) typically display high levels of genome degradation and are cited as an example of convergent evolution for host adaptation in humans. However, S. Paratyphi C presents a different clinical picture to S. Typhi/Paratyphi A, in a patient group with predisposition, raising the possibility that its natural history is different, and that infection is invasive salmonellosis rather than enteric fever. Using whole genome sequencing and metabolic pathway analysis, we compared the genomes of 17 S. Paratyphi C strains to other members of the 6,7:c:1,5 group and to two typhoidal serovars: S. Typhi and Paratyphi A. The genome degradation observed in S. Paratyphi C was much lower than S. Typhi/Paratyphi A, but similar to the other 6,7:c:1,5 strains. Genomic and metabolic comparisons revealed little to no overlap between S. Paratyphi C and the other typhoidal serovars, arguing against convergent evolution and instead providing evidence of a primary adaptation to pigs in accordance with the 6,7:c:1.5 strains
