A marine heat wave of unprecedented severity, areal extent and duration occurred in the Northeast Pacific Ocean during 2014-2016. This event, known as the “Blob,” had a wide variety of far- ranging effects on physical, chemical, and biological ocean properties. Because the Blob was such a massive perturbation, it represents an attractively large signal for inquiry in the Salish Sea. It represents a dress rehearsal for typical conditions in future decades due to global climate change
Specific Sport Training Effect on FMS and Y Balance Scores
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and Y-Balance Test (YBT) are functional measurement tools utilized for injury prevention, performance predictability, and as return to sport criteria. The FMS is comprised of 7 standardized tests of movement patterns that are rated from 0-3 and includes: Deep Squat, Hurdle Step, In-Line Lunge, Shoulder Mobility, Active Straight Leg Raise, Trunk Stability Push-Up, and Rotary Stability. The YBT is a measurement of single leg stance in the anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral directions that is advocated for assessing dynamic balance. High Resolution STIS/HST and HIRES/Keck Spectra of Three Weak MgII Absorbers Toward PG 1634+706
High resolution optical (HIRES/Keck) and UV (STIS/HST) spectra, covering a
large range of chemical transitions, are analyzed for three single-cloud weak
MgII absorption systems along the line of sight toward the quasar PG 1634+706.
Weak MgII absorption lines in quasar spectra trace metal-enriched environments
that are rarely closely associated with the most luminous galaxies (>0.05L^*).
The two weak MgII systems at z=0.81 and z=0.90 are constrained to have >=solar
metallicity, while the metallicity of the z=0.65 system is not as
well-constrained, but is consistent with >1/10th solar. These weak MgII clouds
are likely to be local pockets of high metallicity in a lower metallicity
environment. All three systems have two phases of gas, a higher density region
that produces narrower absorption lines for low ionization transitions, such as
MgII, and a lower density region that produces broader absorption lines for
high ionization transitions, such as CIV. The CIV profile for one system (at
z=0.81) can be fit with a single broad component (b~10 km/s), but those for the
other two systems require one or two additional offset high ionization clouds.
Two possible physical pictures for the phase structure are discussed: one with
a low-ionization, denser phase embedded in a lower density surrounding medium,

Spreading in Social Systems: Reflections
In this final chapter, we consider the state-of-the-art for spreading in
social systems and discuss the future of the field. As part of this reflection,
we identify a set of key challenges ahead. The challenges include the following
questions: how can we improve the quality, quantity, extent, and accessibility
of datasets? How can we extract more information from limited datasets? How can
we take individual cognition and decision making processes into account? How
can we incorporate other complexity of the real contagion processes? Finally,
how can we translate research into positive real-world impact? In the

Global megatrends and their implications for environmental assessment practice
This paper addresses the future of environmental assessment (EA) practice in light of a rapidly changing world. We apply a literature review-based methodology to firstly identify key global megatrends and then reflect upon the implications for EA practice based on some known challenges. The key megatrends identified are synthesised into six categories: i) demographics, ii) urbanization, iii) technological innovation, iv) power shifts, v) resource scarcity and vi) climate change. We then discuss the implications of these megatrends for EA practice against four known EA challenges namely: dealing with i) complexity and uncertainty, ii) efficiency, iii) significance and iv) communication and participation. Our analysis suggests important implications for EA practice such as: increased difficulties with accuracy of prediction; the need for facilitative adaptation; an increase in the occurrence of unexpected events; higher expectations for procedural efficiency; challenges with information and communication management; dealing with significance judgements; and mitigation amidst resource scarcity and increasing pressures on earth systems. The megatrends underscore the need for continued evolution of EA thinking and practice, especially moving away from seeking a predictable single future or outcome towards the possibility of multiple scenarios with associated adaptability and enhanced system resilience capable of responding to rapid change
