Background: A decline in fertility rate and expansion in life span has resulted in the growth in the percentage of aged populations in the whole world. India and Odisha are no exceptions. Objectives: The objective of the present paper is to find out the incidence of functional ability/inability among the aged people of the rural areas of western Odisha of India. Materials and Methods: Katz Scale of ADL was used to assess the functional ability of elderly people. Six activities of daily living such as (Bathing, Dressing, Toilet, Mobility, Continence, and Feeding) were analyzed as per age and sex of the samples. Results: Of all the samples (1992), 98.5 percent are physically independent and only 1.4 percent are physically dependent. Out of 945 female elderly people, 931 (98.1%) are independent and out of 1047 male elderly people 1033 (98.6%) are independent. The physical dependency of females is more with a ?2 – value of 0.075 and p – value of 0.466. The age group wise ?2 – value is 20.899 (3) and p – value of 0.001. Conclusion: Lesser physical dependency is found among the elderly people in rural areas. An increase in dependency is seen with the increase in age

Uterine fibroid, a noncancerous growth of the uterus that often appear during childbearing age of female and it is one such gynecological disorder which is posing a major health problem. Regardless of benign neoplastic character, uterine fibroids are responsible for significant morbidity in a large segment of the female population. Ayurvedic texts have described Mamsaja granthi which perfectly correlates with benign neoplasm on modern lines. The present study was carried out to evaluate the role of Jalakumbhi Churna in the treatment of uterine fibroid. 30 female patients in reproductive age group who were suffering from uterine fibroid were registered for the present research work. 30 patients were divided equally into 2 groups, 15 patients were treated with Trail group drug i.e. by Jalakumbhi churna 6gm BD for 2 months and 15 patients were treated with Control group drug i.e. Nagakesar churna 6gm BD for 2 months. The diagnoses of uterine fibroids of patients were confirmed by clinical as well as investigation findings. After conducting clinical trial on 30 patients, observation and results were obtained. Statistical analysis shows that both trail and control drug were significantly effective to reduce the cardinal symptoms. As compared to Control drug the effect of Trail drug is better to reduce subjective and objective parameters. Results shows 20% patients were cured and 80% patients were improved after second follow up in trial group, while 26.66% patients were improved and 73.33% patients were not cured after second follow up in control group. Present study concludes that trail drug can definitely be used as adjuvant drug in the management of uterine fibroids.

Amlapitta is a disease prevalent all over the world. The increasing prevalence rate is a constant challenge to the research workers. The disease Amlapitta is a common functional disease of Annavaha srotas. Materialistic life style provokes people to run behind a busy, stressful life with least concern towards proper food habit. The aim of the present study was to find out efficacy of Chhinnodbhavadi Ghanavati in comparison to modern PPI. In present study total 40 patients were taken, divided into 2 equal groups. In group-I: 20 patients were treated with oral administration of trial drug that is Chhinnodbhavadi ghanavati 500mg 2 tab twice a day for 45 days and in group-II: 20 patients were treated with control drug that is Pantaprazole 40mg 1 tab once a day orally for 45 days. After conducting clinical trial on 40 patients, observation and results were obtained. Statistical analysis shows that both trail and control drug were significantly effective to reduce the cardinal symptoms. As compared to trail drug the effect of control drug is better to reduce symptoms. However as compared to side effects and contra-indications of the control drug, it is advisable to use Chhinnodbhavadi Ghanavati for the treatment of Amlapitta for a long period

Itraconazole is now being used as the first line drug for dermatophytosis. Complete clinical and mycological cure are not achieved in some cases. The Super Bioavailable (SB) formulation is being marketed as a better formulation of drug in terms of bioavailability. To compare the efficacy and safety of SB and conventional Itraconazole in treatment of dermatophytosis. We compared the efficacy and safety of conventional itraconazole 100 mg twice daily with SB itraconazole 50 mg twice daily in dermatophytosis for two weeks. A convenient sample size of 30 was taken in each group. There was no significant difference in clinical parameters like erythema, scaling, number of papules between the two groups. Change in mean haemoglobin, total leucocyte count, platelet count, liver enzymes SGOT and SGPT and ALP did not differ significantly between the groups. There was no significant difference in the change in KOH status between the groups. There was no significant difference in clinical and mycological clearance between the conventional and the Super Bioavailable itraconazole at the end of two weeks in case of dermatophytosis of glabrous skin

Erythrokeratodermas are a rare group of genetic disorders presenting early in childhood as erythematous, hyperkeratotic plaques on the skin. There may be associated neurological involvement. A 12-year-old boy presented with symmetric keratotic plaques on the body since infancy. Psoriasis and pityriasis rubra pilaris were ruled out after histopathological examination of the skin. We are reporting a case of progressive symmetric erythrokeratoderma with classical lesions but can be missed due to unawareness

A molecular model of artificial photosynthesis: Mn-Ca binuclear complex for photosynthetic oxidation of water

    No full text
246-249The redox active component of oxygenic photosynthetic reaction center II contains metal cluster Mn4-Ca, where two H2O are oxidized to O2 and four H+ ions are liberated. A binuclear Mn-Ca metal center binding one substrate H2O on each ion is proposed to be the minimal unit of the redox center. A model for the water oxidizing metal cluster is built with molecular modeling software (HyperChem 8.0 Pro). Mn, being a transitional metal with variable valency is redox active, while Ca is redox inert. Formation and deprotonation of H2O˙+ on MnIII may be favorable compared to Ca. Deprotonation of H2O˙+ yields a stable species HOˉ on MnIV by transfer of one electron from MnIII as a consequence of first photoact. Similarly, during second photoact, it may lead to formation of MnV = O. The O-O bond may be formed in the third photoact between O on Mn and H2O on Ca. Subsequently, HO2˙ˉ may be formed, leading to formation of O2. Molecular models are built for each transition states
