Evolution of structure of SiO2 nanoparticles upon cooling from the melt
Evolution of structure of spherical SiO2 nanoparticles upon cooling from the
melt has been investigated via molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations under
non-periodic boundary conditions (NPBC). We use the pair interatomic potentials
which have weak Coulomb interaction and Morse type short-range interaction. The
change in structure of SiO2 nanoparticles upon cooling process has been studied
through the partial radial distribution functions (PRDFs), coordination number
and bond-angle distributions at different temperatures. The core and surface
structures of nanoparticles have been studied in details. Our results show
significant temperature dependence of structure of nanoparticles. Moreover,
temperature dependence of concentration of structural defects in nanoparticles
upon cooling from the melt toward glassy state has been found and discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

Morphological characteristics and genetic diversity of <em>Terapon jarbua</em> (Forrskäl, 1775) in Central, Vietnam
Many environmental factors affect the morphology of migratory fish species, such as salinity, water flow rate, and temperature. However, studies on changes in fish morphology under environmental variations from salt water to brackish water are still limited in many fish species, especially in *Terapon jarbua*. This study aims to investigate the differences in the morphological parameters of *T. jarbua* between the coastal sea (seawater) and lagoon (brackish water); and between male and female fish based on a landmark morphological approach. Additionally, the genetic diversity of *T. jarbua* populations in Central Vietnam was elucidated using the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I (mtDNA COI) sequence as a molecular marker. The analytical results indicated no sexual dimorphism in the *T. jarbua* population, yet conformational differences exist between the two studied aquatic species. The analysis of 42 mtDNA COI sequences collected from Central Vietnam identified 13 haplotypes with medium genetic diversity and low genetic differentiation between the Tam Giang lagoon and Thua Thien Hue coastal (Fst = 0.028) and not significant (p = 0.126). Most haplotypes obtained are present in reference populations, indicating a high genetic exchange between populations. We proposed that the *T. jarbua* population in Central Vietnam has a stable connection with neighboring populations (China, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan)
Negative Magnetoresistance in the Nearest-neighbor Hopping Conduction
We propose a size effect which leads to the negative magnetoresistance in
granular metal-insulator materials in which the hopping between two nearest
neighbor clusters is the main transport mechanism. We show that the hopping
probability increases with magnetic field. This is originated from the level
crossing in a few-electron cluster. Thus, the overlap of electronic states of
two neighboring clusters increases, and the negative magnetoresistance is

Multiscale theory of nonlinear wavepacket propagation in a planar optical waveguide
In this paper, the multiscale expansion formalism is applied for the first time, to our knowledge, in nonlinear planar optical waveguides. This formalism permits us to describe the linear and nonlinear propagation for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes. The modal field distributions and the nonlinear coefficient in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are highlighted
Polarization switching in a planar optical waveguide
The multiscale expansion formalism is applied to the study of nonlinear planar optical waveguides. It allows us to describe the linear and nonlinear propagation for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes, and the interaction between them. An accurate computation of the nonlinear self- and cross-phase modulation coefficients allows one to give account of the polarization switching which has been observed experimentally
Sound-Dr: Reliable Sound Dataset and Baseline Artificial Intelligence System for Respiratory Illnesses
As the burden of respiratory diseases continues to fall on society worldwide,
this paper proposes a high-quality and reliable dataset of human sounds for
studying respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia and COVID-19. It consists
of coughing, mouth breathing, and nose breathing sounds together with metadata
on related clinical characteristics. We also develop a proof-of-concept system
for establishing baselines and benchmarking against multiple datasets, such as
Coswara and COUGHVID. Our comprehensive experiments show that the Sound-Dr
dataset has richer features, better performance, and is more robust to dataset
shifts in various machine learning tasks. It is promising for a wide range of
real-time applications on mobile devices. The proposed dataset and system will
serve as practical tools to support healthcare professionals in diagnosing
