    Encouraging Dialogue around Social Issues with Latinx Students Through Literature Discussion and Culturally Relevant Literature

    This teacher research study examines literature discussions with fourth and fifth grade Latinx students about books that reflect Latinx experiences. For this study, the following questions are explored (1) What social issues do students discuss in literature groups? (2) How do literary response strategies influence student dialogue? And (3) How does my theoretical frame influence my decision making as a teacher? Theories that informed the construction of the literature discussions and the decision making occurring throughout the study are examined closely. The theories intertwine and bridge education and students’ experiences as a resource in learning more about the educational setting. In this study, the discussions of students and the literature response strategies are explored as the data is analyzed to examine the student discussions around issues of immigration, family separation, borders, and so much more. The findings in this study indicate that the experiences of Latinx students are integral to the educational setting and an education that invites who they are enhances their learning experiences. Latinx students are eager for learning opportunities that invite their voices and stories. It is through the construction and assessment of the educational setting that educators can promote culturally responsive, relevant, and sustaining teaching experiences that go beyond the classroom setting. Latinx students build relationships with each other and their teachers as they engage in discussions that allow them to share and learn with each other. This study is a reminder of the crucial role teachers play in creating such powerful spaces and the value that Latinx students bring into the classroom when invited to discuss, engage, and create powerful learning experiences

    Fungal diversity notes 253–366: taxonomic and phylogenetic contributions to fungal taxa

    Notes on 113 fungal taxa are compiled in this paper, including 11 new genera, 89 new species, one new subspecies, three new combinations and seven reference specimens. A wide geographic and taxonomic range of fungal taxa are detailed. In the Ascomycota the new genera Angustospora (Testudinaceae), Camporesia (Xylariaceae), Clematidis, Crassiparies (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), Farasanispora, Longiostiolum (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), Multilocularia (Parabambusicolaceae), Neophaeocryptopus (Dothideaceae), Parameliola (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), and Towyspora (Lentitheciaceae) are introduced. Newly introduced species are Angustospora nilensis, Aniptodera aquibella, Annulohypoxylon albidiscum, Astrocystis thailandica, Camporesia sambuci, Clematidis italica, Colletotrichum menispermi, C. quinquefoliae, Comoclathris pimpinellae, Crassiparies quadrisporus, Cytospora salicicola, Diatrype thailandica, Dothiorella rhamni, Durotheca macrostroma, Farasanispora avicenniae, Halorosellinia rhizophorae, Humicola koreana, Hypoxylon lilloi, Kirschsteiniothelia tectonae, Lindgomyces okinawaensis, Longiostiolum tectonae, Lophiostoma pseudoarmatisporum, Moelleriella phukhiaoensis, M. pongdueatensis, Mucoharknessia anthoxanthi, Multilocularia bambusae, Multiseptospora thysanolaenae, Neophaeocryptopus cytisi, Ocellularia arachchigei, O. ratnapurensis, Ochronectria thailandica, Ophiocordyceps karstii, Parameliola acaciae, P. dimocarpi, Parastagonospora cumpignensis, Pseudodidymosphaeria phlei, Polyplosphaeria thailandica, Pseudolachnella brevifusiformis, Psiloglonium macrosporum, Rhabdodiscus albodenticulatus, Rosellinia chiangmaiensis, Saccothecium rubi, Seimatosporium pseudocornii, S. pseudorosae, Sigarispora ononidis and Towyspora aestuari. Descriptions, illustrations and / or reference specimens are designated for Aposphaeria corallinolutea, Cryptovalsa ampelina, Dothiorella vidmadera, Ophiocordyceps formosana, Petrakia echinata, Phragmoporthe conformis and Pseudocamarosporium pini. The new species of Basidiomycota are Agaricus coccyginus, A. luteofibrillosus, Amanita atrobrunnea, A. digitosa, A. gleocystidiosa, A. pyriformis, A. strobilipes, Bondarzewia tibetica, Cortinarius albosericeus, C. badioflavidus, C. dentigratus, C. duboisensis, C. fragrantissimus, C. roseobasilis, C. vinaceobrunneus, C. vinaceogrisescens, C. wahkiacus, Cyanoboletus hymenoglutinosus, Fomitiporia atlantica, F. subtilissima, Ganoderma wuzhishanensis, Inonotus shoreicola, Lactifluus armeniacus, L. ramipilosus, Leccinum indoaurantiacum, Musumecia alpina, M. sardoa, Russula amethystina subp. tengii and R. wangii are introduced. Descriptions, illustrations, notes and / or reference specimens are designated for Clarkeinda trachodes, Dentocorticium ussuricum, Galzinia longibasidia, Lentinus stuppeus and Leptocorticium tenellum. The other new genera, species new combinations are Anaeromyces robustus, Neocallimastix californiae and Piromyces finnis from Neocallimastigomycota, Phytophthora estuarina, P. rhizophorae, Salispina, S. intermedia, S. lobata and S. spinosa from Oomycota, and Absidia stercoraria, Gongronella orasabula, Mortierella calciphila, Mucor caatinguensis, M. koreanus, M. merdicola and Rhizopus koreanus in Zygomycota

    Quantifying the Nongeminate Recombination Dynamics in Nonfullerene Bulk Heterojunction Organic Solar Cells

    In this study, a comprehensive analytical model to quantify the total nongeminate recombination losses, originating from bimolecular as well as bulk and surface trap-assisted recombination mechanisms in nonfullerene-based bulk heterojunction organic solar cells is developed. This proposed model is successfully employed to obtain the different contributions to the recombination current of the investigated solar cells under different illumination intensities. Additionally, the model quantitatively describes the experimentally measured open-circuit voltage versus light intensity dependence. Most importantly, it is possible to calculate the experimental results with the same fitting parameter values from the presented model. The validity of this model is also proven by a combination of other independent, steady-state, and transient experimental techniques. This new powerful analytical tool will enable researchers in the photovoltaic community to take into account the synergetic contribution from all relevant types of nongeminate recombination losses in different optoelectronic systems and target their analysis of recombination dynamics at any operating voltage.11Nsciescopu

    The influence of INK4 proteins on growth and self-renewal kinetics of hematopoietic progenitor cells

    This study investigated the influence of expression of proteins of the INK4 family, particularly p16, on the growth and self-renewal kinetics of hematopoietic cells. First, retrovirus-mediated gene transfer (RMGT) was used to restore p16(INK4a) expression in the p16(INK4a)-deficient lymphoid and myeloid cell lines BV173 and K562, and it was confirmed that this inhibited their growth. Second, to sequester p16(INK4a) and related INK4 proteins, cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) was retrovirally transduced into normal human CD34(+) bone marrow cells and then cultured in myeloid colony-forming cell (CFC) assays. The growth of CDK4-transduced colonies was more rapid; the cell-doubling time was reduced; and, upon replating, the colonies produced greater yields of secondary colonies than mock-untransduced controls. Third, colony formation was compared by marrow cells from p16(INK4a-/-) mice and wild-type mice. The results from p16(INK4a-/-) marrow were similar to those from CDK4-transduced human CFCs, in terms of growth rate and replating ability, and were partially reversed by RMGT of p16(INK4a). Lines of immature granulocytic cells were raised from 15 individual colonies grown from the marrow of p16(INK4a-/-) mice. These had a high colony-forming ability (15%) and replating efficiency (96.7%). The p16(INK4a-/-) cell lines readily became growth factor-independent upon cytokine deprivation. Taken together, these results demonstrate that loss of INK4 proteins, in particular p16(INK4a), increases the growth rate of myeloid colonies in vitro and, more importantly, confers an increased ability for clonal expansion on hematopoietic progenitor cells

    A High-Performance Solution-Processed Organic Photodetector for Near-Infrared Sensing

    Sensitive detection of near-infrared (NIR) light enables many important applications in both research and industry. Current organic photodetectors suffer from low NIR sensitivity typically due to early absorption cutoff, low responsivity, and/or large dark/noise current under bias. Herein, organic photodetectors based on a novel ultranarrow-bandgap nonfullerene acceptor, CO1-4Cl, are presented, showcasing a remarkable responsivity over 0.5 A W-1 in the NIR spectral region (920-960 nm), which is the highest among organic photodiodes. By effectively delaying the onset of the space charge limited current and suppressing the shunt leakage current, the optimized devices show a large specific detectivity around 10(12) Jones for NIR spectral region up to 1010 nm, close to that of a commercial Si photodiode. The presented photodetectors can also be integrated in photoplethysmography for real-time heart-rate monitoring, suggesting its potential for practical applications.11Nsciescopu
