\u3cem\u3eTenues Grandia\u3c/em\u3e: Lyric Performance in Horace and Marvell

    Get PDF
Poetic performance does not just refer to the public recitation of a prepared work of poetry. Poems bear witness to and construct acts of social performance and contribute to the creation of personae. Because it commonly draws attention to its audiences and speakers, lyric poetry is particularly suitable for such performances. In their respective lyric poetry, Horace and Marvell explore constructions of private lyric spaces withdrawn from their socio-historical contexts, the public sphere. While these spaces therefore seem separate from this public sphere, the two spheres are intertwined: these private spaces are shaped by, but also shape the public

UNIVERSITY STUDENTSโ€™ CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS: TEACHERSโ€™ PERCEPTIONS AND PRACTICES IN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS

    Get PDF
Research into critical thinking has witnessed its role in studentsโ€™ foreign language learning, including English. Of components contributing to studentsโ€™ critical thinking development, teachers are the ones who engage students in thinking about or making judgment of what they are doing in their learning process. As critical thinking and language skills are known as intertwined, argumentative essays allow students to reflect on their own writing. However, research on teachersโ€™ perceptions and practices of the interplay between studentsโ€™ critical thinking and argumentative essays is still meagre. This paper, therefore, examines this area of interest. Data collected in this study include a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Participants were 85 teachers at a university in the Mekong delta, and six participated in the interview process. The findings reveal that teachersโ€™ perceptions of studentsโ€™ critical thinking regarding interpreting, analysing, inferencing, evaluating and self-regulating were at a high level. Debates and group discussions were the two activities teachers used most in writing classes. Recommendations from this study may offer some pedagogical implications for ย the implementation of critical thinking to hone studentsโ€™ argumentative essay writing.ย  Article visualizations

Hydrocotyle bonariensis, growing in the Mekong-delta, is used as vegetable and has not yet been chemically studied. From the aerial parts of H. bonariensis, three compounds had been isolated: a triterpene squalene (1) and a mixture of two lignans: hinokinin (2) and ฮฑ-[3,4-methylendioxy phenylmethylidene]-ฮฒ-[3,4-methylendioxyphenylmethyl]-ฮณ-butyrolactone (3). The fresh plant was divided into stem-leaf and flower and each part was distilled with steam to afford essential oils. The major components of stem-leaf are: (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, trans-caryophyllene, ฮฑ-farnesene, copaene while the major components of flower are: ฮฑ-pinene, 2-ฮฒ-pinene, ฮฒ-myrcene, limonene, ฮฑ-caryophyllene, epibicyclosesquiphellandrene. The essential oil of the stem-leaf showed cytotoxic activities in vitro on RD and Hep-G2 cancer cells with the IC50 values of 16.1 and 19.9ยตg/ml, respectively. The study on the plant is being continued

Another goal was to explain the factors that caused changes in Vietnam-North Korea relations at each time. Lastly, evaluating the role that North Korea and Vietnam are seeing each other which is considered the prospects in relation of the two countries. In order to achieve these objectives, historical methods, primary and secondary sources were used to analyze international relations theory or linking theory. This paper 110 looked into internal factors and external factors which affect relation between the two countries. In this study, facts that occurred between the two countries were classified into five specific periods. The first period was 1975~1978. I called it 'falling from blood allies to the level of maintaining traditional relationships', and the second period was 1979~1993 - Deteriorating real relationships, political vigilance due to Doi Moi, increased economic trade', the third period was 1994~1999 - Continuous uncomfortable relations, the fourth period was 2000~2011 - Stable relationship recovery, active cooperation and finally 2012 ~ Present: defined as Escape from solidarity based on ideology to a pragmatic route'.I.

An Extended RFM Model for Customer Behaviour and Demographic Analysis in Retail Industry

    Get PDF
Background: Customer segmentation has become one of the most innovative ways which help businesses adopt appropriate marketing campaigns and reach targeted customers. The RFM model and machine learning combination have been widely applied in various areas. Motivations: With the rapid increase of transactional data, the RFM model can accurately segment customers and provide deeper insights into customersโ€™ purchasing behaviour. However, the traditional RFM model is limited to 3 variables, Recency, Frequency and Monetary, without revealing segments based on demographic features. Meanwhile, the contribution of demographic characteristics to marketing strategies is extremely important. Methods/Approach: The article proposed an extended RFMD model (D-Demographic) with a combination of behavioural and demographic variables. Customer segmentation can be performed effectively using the RFMD model, K-Means, and K-Prototype algorithms. Results: The extended model is applied to the retail dataset, and the experimental result shows 5 clusters with different features. The effectiveness of the new model is measured by the Adjusted Rand Index and Adjusted Mutual Information. Furthermore, we use Cohort analysis to analyse customer retention rates and recommend marketing strategies for each segment. Conclusions: According to the evaluation, the proposed RMFD model was deployed with stable results created by two clustering algorithms. Businesses can apply this model to deeply understand customer behaviour with their demographics and launch efficient campaigns

Maturation and substrate processing topography of the Plasmodium falciparum invasion/egress protease plasmepsin X

    Get PDF
The malaria parasite Plasmodium invades a host erythrocyte, multiplies within a parasitophorous vacuole (PV) and then ruptures the PV and erythrocyte membranes in a process known as egress. Both egress and invasion are controlled by effector proteins discharged from specialized secretory organelles. The aspartic protease plasmepsin X (PM X) regulates activity for many of these effectors, but it is unclear how PM X accesses its diverse substrates that reside in different organelles. PM X also autoprocesses to generate different isoforms. The function of this processing is not understood. We have mapped the self-cleavage sites and have constructed parasites with cleavage site mutations. Surprisingly, a quadruple mutant that remains full-length retains in vitro activity, is trafficked normally, and supports normal egress, invasion and parasite growth. The N-terminal half of the prodomain stays bound to the catalytic domain even after processing and is required for proper intracellular trafficking of PM X. We find that this enzyme cleaves microneme and exoneme substrates before discharge, while the rhoptry substrates that are dependent on PM X activity are cleaved after exoneme discharge into the PV. The data give insight into the temporal, spatial and biochemical control of this unusual but important aspartic protease

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stressful relationship between parents and children

    Get PDF
The stressful relationship between children and parents is the pain both go through when they find themselves unable to cope as a parent or a child. In order to find out the status, causes, and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and suggest some solutions to reduce stress between parents and children, we surveyed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stressful relationships between parents and children at high school age in Da Nang city. The findings of a survey conducted on 550 randomly selected parents and 550 high school students using the Perceived Stress Scale reveal a high rate of tension between parents and their children, particularly up to 51.1% and 38.5%, respectively. In reality, many factors are affecting the stressful relationship between parents and their children at this age, in which psychological fear about health; social distancing policy; closed schools; students staying at home 24 hours a day and learning online; the disruption in children's daily routine; excessive use of electronic devices are major causes of stress in the relationship between parents and their children. From this practice, our research team has proposed such solutions as participating in creative activities and consulting the handbook instructing parents' behaviour rules toward children and vice versa, designing extra-curricular activities, and organizing training courses on life values for both parents and children to increase happiness and reduce stress in the parent-child relationship
