Investigating Local Studentsâ Support for Inbound Tourism and its Relationship with Place Attachment in Hue City/Vietnam
This study, situated in the touristy city of Huáşż in Central Vietnam, takes the case of the young Vietnamese, particularly University students, in order to investigate the localsâ support for inbound tourism. It also measured a multidimensional construct of place attachment and determined the influence of this concept on their support levels. Findings have shown that the overall level of support is relatively high, wherein indicators related to pride and identity have generally scored higher than the ones related to economic factors. Female respondents have been indicated to show higher support for tourism inbound to Vietnam and students majoring in tourism have been found to be more supportive of inbound tourism than their counterparts from other faculties. In addition, place attachment was specified to have a significant impact on the respondentsâ levels of support for inbound tourism
The Long Memory of Equity Volatility and the Macroeconomy: International Evidence
This paper examines long memory volatility in international stock markets. We show that long memory volatility is widespread in a panel dataset of eighty-two countries and that the degree of memory in the panel can be related to macroeconomic variables such as short- and long-run interest rates and unemployment. Moreover, we find that developed economies possess longer memory in volatility than emerging and frontier countries and that stock market jumps are negatively correlated with long memory of volatility. Overall, our results provide some evidence of a link between stock market uncertainty and macroeconomic conditions, which is prevalent across a large range of countries
Cell type-selective disease-association of genes under high regulatory load
We previously showed that disease-linked metabolic genes are often under combinatorial regulation. Using the genome-wide ChIP-Seq binding profiles for 93 transcription factors in nine different cell lines, we show that genes under high regulatory load are significantly enriched for disease-association across cell types. We find that transcription factor load correlates with the enhancer load of the genes and thereby allows the identification of genes under high regulatory load by epigenomic mapping of active enhancers. Identification of the high enhancer load genes across 139 samples from 96 different cell and tissue types reveals a consistent enrichment for disease-associated genes in a cell type-selective manner. The underlying genes are not limited to super-enhancer genes and show several types of disease-association evidence beyond genetic variation (such as biomarkers). Interestingly, the high regulatory load genes are involved in more KEGG pathways than expected by chance, exhibit increased betweenness centrality in the interaction network of liver disease genes, and carry longer 3ⲠUTRs with more microRNA (miRNA) binding sites than genes on average, suggesting a role as hubs integrating signals within regulatory networks. In summary, epigenetic mapping of active enhancers presents a promising and unbiased approach for identification of novel disease genes in a cell type-selective manne
Quantitative transcript analysis of the inducible expression system pSIP: comparison of the overexpression of Lactobacillus spp. β-galactosidases in Lactobacillus plantarum
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Two sets of overlapping genes, <it>lacLMReu </it>and <it>lacLMAci</it>, encoding heterodimeric β-galactosidases from <it>Lactobacillus reuteri </it>and <it>Lactobacillus acidophilus</it>, respectively, have previously been cloned and expressed using the pSIP vector system and <it>Lactobacillus plantarum </it>WCSF1 as host. Despite the high similarity between these <it>lacLM </it>genes and the use of identical cloning and expression strategies, strains harboring <it>lacLMReu </it>produced about twenty-fold more β-galactosidase than strains containing <it>lacLMAci</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study, the plasmid copy numbers (PCN) of expression vectors pEH9R (<it>lacLMReu</it>) and pEH9A (<it>lacLMAci</it>) as well as the transcription levels of both <it>lacLM </it>genes were compared using quantitative PCR methods. Analyses of parallel fermentations of <it>L. plantarum </it>harboring either pEH9R or pEH9A showed that the expression plasmids were present in similar copy numbers. However, transcript levels of <it>lacLM </it>from <it>L. reuteri </it>(pEH9R) were up to 18 times higher than those of <it>lacLM </it>from <it>L. acidophilus </it>(pEH9A). As a control, it was shown that the expression levels of regulatory genes involved in pheromone-induced promoter activation were similar in both strains.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The use of identical expression strategies for highly similar genes led to very different mRNA levels. The data indicate that this difference is primarily caused by translational effects that are likely to affect both mRNA synthesis rates and mRNA stability. These translational effects thus seem to be a dominant determinant for the success of gene expression efforts in lactobacilli.</p
Smartwatches : accessory or tool? The driving force of visibility and usefulness
Although still in the early stages of diffusion, smartwatches represent the most popular type of wearable devices. Yet, little is known why some people are more likely to adopt smartwatches than others. To deepen the understanding of underlying factors prompting adoption behavior, the authors develop a theoretical model grounded in technology acceptance and social psychology literature. Empirical results reveal perceived usefulness and visibility as important factors that drive intention. The magnitude of these antecedents is influenced by an individualâs perception of viewing smartwatches as a technology and/or as a fashion accessory. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed
How to Search the Internet Archive Without Indexing It
Significant parts of cultural heritage are produced on the web during the
last decades. While easy accessibility to the current web is a good baseline,
optimal access to the past web faces several challenges. This includes dealing
with large-scale web archive collections and lacking of usage logs that contain
implicit human feedback most relevant for today's web search. In this paper, we
propose an entity-oriented search system to support retrieval and analytics on
the Internet Archive. We use Bing to retrieve a ranked list of results from the
current web. In addition, we link retrieved results to the WayBack Machine;
thus allowing keyword search on the Internet Archive without processing and
indexing its raw archived content. Our search system complements existing web
archive search tools through a user-friendly interface, which comes close to
the functionalities of modern web search engines (e.g., keyword search, query
auto-completion and related query suggestion), and provides a great benefit of
taking user feedback on the current web into account also for web archive
search. Through extensive experiments, we conduct quantitative and qualitative
analyses in order to provide insights that enable further research on and
practical applications of web archives
