    The A-decomposability of the Singer construction

    Let RsMR_s M denote the Singer construction on an unstable module MM over the Steenrod algebra AA at the prime two; RsMR_s M is canonically a subobject of Ps⊗MP_s\otimes M, where PsP_s is the polynomial algebra on s generators of degree one. Passage to AA-indecomposables gives the natural transformation RsM→F⊗A(Ps⊗M)R_s M \rightarrow F \otimes_A (P_s \otimes M), which identifies with the dual of the composition of the Singer transfer and the Lannes-Zarati homomorphism. The main result of the paper proves the weak generalized algebraic spherical class conjecture, which was proposed by the first named author. Namely, this morphism is trivial on elements of positive degree when s>2. The condition s>2 is necessary, as exhibited by the spherical classes of Hopf invariant one and those of Kervaire invariant one.Comment: v2 15 pages.     Bayesian Nonparametric Multilevel Clustering with Group-Level Contexts

    We present a Bayesian nonparametric framework for multilevel clustering which utilizes group-level context information to simultaneously discover low-dimensional structures of the group contents and partitions groups into clusters. Using the Dirichlet process as the building block, our model constructs a product base-measure with a nested structure to accommodate content and context observations at multiple levels. The proposed model possesses properties that link the nested Dirichlet processes (nDP) and the Dirichlet process mixture models (DPM) in an interesting way: integrating out all contents results in the DPM over contexts, whereas integrating out group-specific contexts results in the nDP mixture over content variables. We provide a Polya-urn view of the model and an efficient collapsed Gibbs inference procedure. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the advantage of utilizing context information via our model in both text and image domains.Comment: Full version of ICML 201

    Design and Implementation of Welding Mobile Robot Using a Proposed Control Scheme Based On Its Developed Dynamic Modeling for Tracking Desired Welding Trajectory

    This paper presents a proposed control scheme that makes the combination of a kinematic controller (KC) and an integral sliding mode controller (ISMC) for a welding mobile robot (WMR) to track a desired welding path. First, a posture tracking error vector is defined and a kinematic controller is designed based on kinematic modeling to make the tracking error vector go to zero asymptotically. Second, a sliding surface vector is defined based on the velocity tracking error vector and its integral term. And then, an integral sliding mode dynamic controller is designed based on developed dynamic modeling to make velocity tracking error vector also go to zero asymptotically. The above controllers are obtained by backstepping method. The stability of system is proved based on the Lyapunov stability theory. To implement the designed tracking controller, a control system is developed based on DSP F28355 and ATmega328. A scheme for measuring the posture tracking error vector using torch sensor is presented. The simulation and experiment results are shown to illustrate effectiveness and the applicability to the welding industry field of the proposed controller

    Application of Random Walk Model for Timing Recovery in Modern Mobile SATCOM Systems

    In a modern mobile satellite communication (SATCOM) system, a ground terminal receiver receives a radio frequency signal that is demodulated to generate a baseband digital signal waveform containing a self-clocking bit stream of digital data. The received baseband digital signal waveform is recovered and tracked using a timing recovery loop (TRL). The traditional TRLs use early-and-late gates, digital transition tracking, filter-and-square, and delay-and-multiply functions. In bit timing detection, the bit stream is self-clocking and the timing differential dithers about correct bit timing in the TRLs. For mobile satellite communication environments, the traditional TRLs drop lock when the loop signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is smaller than a threshold value or the residual Doppler frequency is larger than the operating loop bandwidth. After dropping lock, the traditional TRLs experience long hang up time due to the need to reacquire the timing pulses. Recently, random walk filters (RWF) have been adapted to improve the bit clock locking stability and are applied to recover bit timing information of a digital data stream. This chapter describes random walk model for timing jitter and discusses how RWF solution can address the timing recovery challenges in mobile satellite communication environments

    Fiber-Optic Network Architectures for Onboard Avionics Applications Investigated

    This project is part of a study within the Advanced Air Transportation Technologies program undertaken at the NASA Glenn Research Center. The main focus of the program is the improvement of air transportation, with particular emphasis on air transportation safety. Current and future advances in digital data communications between an aircraft and the outside world will require high-bandwidth onboard communication networks. Radiofrequency (RF) systems, with their interconnection network based on coaxial cables and waveguides, increase the complexity of communication systems onboard modern civil and military aircraft with respect to weight, power consumption, and safety. In addition, safety and reliability concerns from electromagnetic interference between the RF components embedded in these communication systems exist. A simple, reliable, and lightweight network that is free from the effects of electromagnetic interference and capable of supporting the broadband communications needs of future onboard digital avionics systems cannot be easily implemented using existing coaxial cable-based systems. Fiber-optical communication systems can meet all these challenges of modern avionics applications in an efficient, cost-effective manner. The objective of this project is to present a number of optical network architectures for onboard RF signal distribution. Because of the emergence of a number of digital avionics devices requiring high-bandwidth connectivity, fiber-optic RF networks onboard modern aircraft will play a vital role in ensuring a low-noise, highly reliable RF communication system.     Etching suspended superconducting hybrid junctions from a multilayer

    A novel method to fabricate large-area superconducting hybrid tunnel junctions with a suspended central normal metal part is presented. The samples are fabricated by combining photo-lithography and chemical etch of a superconductor - insulator - normal metal multilayer. The process involves few fabrication steps, is reliable and produces extremely high-quality tunnel junctions. Under an appropriate voltage bias, a significant electronic cooling is demonstrated
