    INVESTIGATING TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH ADVERTISING SLOGANS INTO VIETNAMESE

    Advertising slogans can be seen everywhere in this world, from smaller cities to bigger ones and as more and more businesses have been run, a plethora of brands have been introduced. However, many companies in the world now have found their way out of their host countries and wish to do business in other potential countries. When they do this, they need language assistance to advertise their products. Due to this language importance to promote sales, this study aimed to explore twelve advertising slogans related to skin, hair protection, food, beverages and other common brands that are prevalent in Vietnam to see how the English slogans of the brands were translated into Vietnamese. The authors used the translation perspectives proposed by Nida (1991) to help direct the analysis. The result uncovered that the majority of the translated texts did not apply the philological and linguistic perspectives, but instead they were translated based on the Skopos theory, meaning they translated the slogans to purposefully persuade people to purchase the products. This study ignored the communicative perspective as the authors could not record extra-linguistic features such as sounds to insert the effect on buyers. Some proposed suggestions for further studies were also included.   Article visualizations

    RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SEAFOOD EXPORT AND VIETNAM'S ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THE PERIOD OF 2005 – 2022

    This article studies the relationship between seafood exports and Vietnam's economic growth in the period 2005 - 2022.  To conduct the research, the authors collected data on seafood export turnover and economic growth rate - represented by real gross domestic product (GDPr) in the period from 2005 to 2022. Data is collected from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) and international financial statistics sites (IFS, IMF).  After synthesizing and cleaning the data, the research team used Eviews 8 software to analyze the data series to examine the relationship between seafood export turnover and economic growth during the research period. Model results show that when seafood export turnover increases by 1%, economic growth increases by 1.041382%, so it can be confirmed that seafood export has a positive relationship with Vietnam's economic growth during the research period. From the research results, the authors have several proposals to promote the growth of Vietnamese seafood exports to the international market in the post-pandemic context and the volatile world seafood market situation

    Optimization of Design Procedure for Column-base Connections according to EN 1993-1-8:2006

    The stiffness and the strength of a column-base connection have significant impacts on the behavior of a steel frame. The paper develops an interaction curve between moment and axial force for the column-base connections according to EN 1993-1-8:2006 with the variation of the base plate thickness and the bolt diameter. This is the fundamental base to determine the ultimate strength of a column-base plate that allows the designers to estimate the strength of column-base connections. This research investigates the relationship between the base plate thickness, the bolt diameter, and the moment strength of the column-base plate with a specific axial force to select an optimum solution. Also, the initial rotational stiffness is determined under a specific axial load and varied moments that satisfy the ultimate limit state. The relationship between moment–rotation is subsequently performed with the variation of the base plate thickness or the bolt diameter. The design procedure is proposed based on moment-axial force interaction curves and moment-rotation curves. This allows for optimizing the column-base connection from proper selections of base plate dimensions and bolt diameters

    A Review of Occupational Stress among Certain Jobs in Vietnam

    Background: Stress in the modern workplace is globally considered a risk factor for workers’ health and safety. However, a review of the prevalence and associated factors of occupational stress in developing countries like Vietnam was largely lacking. This review aimed to describe the situation of occupational stress among certain jobs from studies carried out in Vietnam. Methods: The review was implemented by using key words to search on online and offline, international and national database. After going through 2 stages of selections, total 25 eligible articles were chosen and used for this review. Results: The results showed the prevalence of occupational stress was varied and ranged from 6.4% to 90.4%. The study population focused on health workers, factory workers, students, academic staff and officers. The prevalence of each occupation ranged from 6.4% to 90.4% in health workers; 20.7% to 89.6% in factory workers; and 22.8% to 68.3% in students. Conclusions: In conclusion, the prevalence of occupational stress was very varied between and within each occupation. Therefore, a new way to develop in enhancing the occupational stress data, particularly in developing countries, is urgently needed

    Vietnam's visa policy for tourists

    States employ travel visa as an instrument to leverage on visitor arrivals for various reasons. In tourism, visa plays a crucial role in facilitating potential and last-minute tourists’ decision making process. This paper focuses on the Vietnamese government’s visa policy in the context of tourism development. Adopting an economic approach, this paper reviews key achievements in tourist immigration policies and examines the challenges that deter tourists from visiting the country.     Comparative study of the analgesic effects of Bungarus fasciatus snake venom from Vinh Phuc and Tien Giang Provinces of Vietnam

    Purpose: To determine the analgesic activity of Bungarus fasciatus venoms and their fractions from two Vietnamese Provinces. Methods: Male Swiss Albino mice were randomly divided into three groups containing 8 to 10 mice each. Control group was injected subcutaneously with normal saline, standard group received aspirin solution (50 mg/kg) perorally, and study group received a solution of crude venom or isolated fractions in physiological saline. To determine analgesic activity, acetic acid writhing and tail immersion tests were used. The venoms were separated by liquid chromatography and the analgesic activity of the fractions was analyzed. Results: Both venoms showed analgesic effect in the acetic acid writhing test, but only the venom from Tien Giang showed analgesic effect in the tail immersion test. The bioactive fractions of Vinh Phuc and Tien Giang venoms were significantly different, with most of Vinh Phuc venom fractions being more active (p < 0.05). Thus, 35 min after the injection, the number of writhings decreased from 15 - 16 in the control to 0.85 ± 0.34 for the BF-4VS (Vinh Phuc) fraction compared to 2.67 ± 1.20 (p < 0.05) for the BF-4DT (Thien Giang) fraction. Two proteins with analgesic activity were isolated from Vinh Phuc venom, and one with greater activity matched the known B. fasciatus phospholipase A2. Conclusion: The analgesic activity of two samples of B. fasciatus venom from two different provinces in Vietnam reveal that their pharmacological profiles differ. The isolates can be explored as leads in the development of new analgesic agents

    Forest fire is one of the disasters causing threats to the forests and the ecosystem and socio-economic aspects throught out the world. Forest fire also leads to an increase in green house gases emisstions. Air pollution due to smoke causes prolonged effects on human health such as respiratory and cardiovascular problems. Knowledge of flammable materials and their potential fire behavior in different forest types is essential in forest fire management. Remote Sensing and GIS can play an important role in detecting burnt forest and developing the spatial models to predict potential forest for fire risk. This study demonstrates the effective use of remote sensing imagery and geographic information system for establishing the forest fire hazard map at scale of 1:100.000 for Daklak province. Landsat ETM image captured in 2011 and Weighted Overlay tool in ArcGIS software were used in this study. Eight parameters of forest types, daily average temperature during  dry  season, daily average precipitation in dry season, daily average  wind  speed,  slope, terrain direction, distant  between  burned  field to forest  and  distant from  resident to forest  were  used  as main inputs in  GIS model. The study result shown that, the total fire area at low fire risk is 219,344 ha (accounting for 35.9% of total area of forest in Daklak province), medium fire risk is 130,207 ha (21.3%), high fire risk is 220,565 ha (36.1%) and very high fire risk is 41,488 ha (6.8%).ReferencesAmparo, A.B., Oscar, F.R., 2003.     Does exporting spur firm productivity and promote inclusive growth? : evidence from Vietnam

    Are exporting firms superior because only superior firms choose to become exporters or do they become superior by virtue of being exporters and having to face greater competition and to specialize in core activities? Findings show that the decision to export induces a gain in capital productivity for the new exporters, but no significant effect is observed for labour productivity and Total Factor Productivity (TFP). This result offers some support for the learning-by-exporting effect that occurs within a sector. Entry of Vietnamese firms into the world market can spur inclusive economic growth of the country
