    Borel-fixed ideals and reduction number

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between reduction numbers and Borel-fixed ideals in all characteristics. By definition, Borel-fixed ideals are closed under certain specializations which is similar to the strong stability. We will estimate the number of monomials which can be specialized to a given monomial. As a consequence, we obtain a combinatorial version of the well-known Eakin-Sathaye's theorem which bounds the reduction number in terms of the Hilbert function. Furthermore, we show that the bound of Eakin-Sathaye's theorem is attained by the reduction number of a lex-segment monomial ideal. This result answers a question of Conca in the affirmative. We will also show that the reduction number of the lex-segment ideal is bounded exponentially by the reduction number of the given ideal.Comment: 11 page

The importance of awareness of nonverbal communication in leadership success: focus on American culture

Objectives This study aims to explore relevant leadership models that factor in the impact of nonverbal cues on perception of good leadership, to find which leadership qualities are perceived from which nonverbal behaviors, to and to propose what changes should be done to make recommendations for leadership development practice. Summary This empirical study was conducted with qualitative interview. The interview was administered to five participants who are U.S employees working in different industries, and who answered all of fifteen questions, which are mostly open ended questions. All fifteen questions are developed based on theories in literature review, and formulated with the structure of the theoretical framework in mind. Conclusions Nonverbal behaviors influence the way employees judge their leaders’ leadership qualities. Specifically, employees actively look for top qualities, which can be shown through several specific nonverbal cues. Overall, leaders’ ability to decode nonverbal signals is to some extent important for both their performance and ratings from employees, and it is suggested that there seems to be a connection between that ability and leaders’ chance of being promoted. Regarding current situation of firms in the interview, there seems to be a lack of training in nonverbal communication for leaders

Design bio-inspired composite structure subjected to blast loading

This paper investigates the behaviour of a bio-inspired finite element composite model (that mimics the structure of nacre, the inner layer of molluscan shells) under blast loading. Nacre, which has attracted the attention of researchers over the past few decades, comprises 95% aragonite, brittle voronoi-like polygonal tablets that are joined by an organic matrix and arranged in a brick and mortar type structure. The best attempt made thus far in mimicking such complex geometry involved rebuilding the tablet contours via optical imaging. This method, which practically copies the nacreous structure, offers no control over the geometry, making it difficult, if not impossible to eventually develop composites that mimic nacre. To this end, the finite element model developed herein was constructed using voronoi diagrams and geometric algorithms capable of automatically generating staggered layers of voronoi-like aluminium tablets bonded together by a vinylester adhesive layer. Many studies have led to the belief that the magnificent toughness of nacre is mainly attributed to the inter-platelet adhesive bonds. Results obtained from the finite element analysis show that this is indeed true, and it is imperative that the adhesive bond exhibits adequate toughness in order to be able to spread damage across the entire composite, thereby delaying localised failure
