Multi-correlation between nematode communities and environmental variables in mangrove-shrimp ponds, Ca Mau Province, Southern Vietnam
Multi-correlation between bio-indices of nematode communities and ecological parameters in mangrove-shrimp farming ponds in Tam Giang commune, Nam Can District, Ca Mau Province, Vietnam were investigated. In which, diversities of nematode communities and several environmental variables in eight ponds were considered to process. Our findings underlined the high diversity of nematode communities in mangrove-shrimp farming ponds compared to other mangrove habitats. Nematode diversities provided more oppotunity in natural food for shrimp. Single correlation analyses showed that the species richness index correlated significantly to three variables (salinity, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen), the Margalef diversity index correlated to two variables (salinity, total organic carbon), and the expected number of species for 50 individuals index correlated with one variable (salinity). Results of multi-correlation analyses between the nematode bio-indices and the environmental variables were completely different from those of single-correlation analyses. In multi-correlation analyses, the species richness and the Margalef diversity index correlated to two variables (salinity, total organic carbon), Pielouâs evenness index and Hill indices correlated with dissolved oxygen, also the Hurlbert index correlated to total organic carbon. Hence, it is necessary to pay attention to the impact of complex interactions between the multi-environmental variables and nematode communities. This research aims to explain the differences between single- and multi-correlation for evaluation of the effects of environmental factors on nematodes as well as aquatic organisms.
Board Independence and Financial Performance: Empirical Evidence on Mediating Role of Market Competition From the Vietnamese Market
Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the effect of board independence on the financial performance of companies listed on the Vietnamese stock exchanges with the mediating role of market competition.

Theoretical framework: The topic is based on agency theory, resource dependency theory and stewardship theory. The independence of the board of directors (BOD) is measured in two aspects: the duality and the non-executive members of BOD. This study approaches the measurement of market competition according to the Herfindahl-Hirschman index (HHI). After calculating the HHI, the study will classify companies in a highly competitive market or a low competitive market.

Design/methodology/approach: The study uses secondary data from the financial statements of companies listed on the Vietnamese stock market with the collection period from 2016 to 2020. The data analysis methods comprise of Pooled ordinary least squares (OLS), Fixed effects model (FEM), Random effects model (REM) and Generalized method of moments estimation (GMM).

Findings: The results of GMM showed that CEO duality is found to have a negative effect on the financial performance of listed firms. Meanwhile, the statistical evidence shows that the percentage of non-executive board members and market competition positively affect the financial performance. In addition, the evidence showed that market competition could reduce the positive influence of the percentage of non-executive board members on financial performance of listed companies.

Research, Practical & Social implications: The study has proposed some governance implications to improve the financial performance of listed firms such as limiting CEO duality, increasing the percentage of non-executive board members and empower the management board in a highly competitive market and choosing the appropriate size of the board.

Originality/value: The value of the study is to provide more scientific basis for policy makers in Vietnam and help listed companies choose and make decisions related to BOD to improve financial efficiency
BIODIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION PATTERNS OF FREE-LIVING NEMATODES COMMUNITIES IN BALAI RIVER, BENTRE PROVINCE
Nematodes communities in Ba Lai river, Ben Tre province were investigated in September of 2015 (eight stations from estuary to upstream). The results showed that the nematodes communities have characterized by high density and biodiversity, providing useful information of nematodes assemblages in freshwater habitas, in particular inland river. Also the results indicated that the distribution of nematodes communities in Ba Lai river was strongly discriminated between in and outside of dam with two groups. The Ba Lai dam may be reasons for cause  the nematodes distribution discontinuity. Present study is a pioneering attempt to record the impact of the dam on benthic-invertebrate in Vietnam
Sample descriptors linked to metagenomic sequencing data from human and animal enteric samples from Vietnam.
There is still limited information on the diversity of viruses co-circulating in humans and animals. Here, we report data obtained from a large field collection of enteric samples taken from humans, pigs, rodents and other mammal hosts in Vietnam between 2012 and 2016. Each of 2100 stool or rectal swab samples was subjected to virally-enriched agnostic metagenomic sequencing; the short read sequence data are accessible from the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA). We link the sequence data to metadata on host type and demography and geographic location, distinguishing hospital patients, members of a cohort identified as a high risk of zoonotic infections (e.g. abattoir workers, rat traders) and animals. These data are suitable for further studies of virus diversity and virus discovery in humans and animals from Vietnam and to identify viruses found in multiple hosts that are potentially zoonotic
The effect of a dam construction on subtidal nematode communities in the Ba Lai Estuary, Vietnam
Nematode communities and relevant environmental variables were investigated to assess how the presence of a dam affects the Ba Lai estuary benthic ecosystem, in comparison to the adjacent dam-free estuary Ham Luong. Both estuaries are part of the Mekong delta system in Vietnam. This study has shown that the dam's construction had an effect on the biochemical components of the Ba Lai estuary, as observed by the local increase in total suspended solids and heavy metal concentrations (Hg and Pb) and by a significant oxygen depletion compared to the natural river of Ham Luong. The nematode communities were also different between the two estuaries in terms of density, genus richness, Shannon-Wiener diversity, and dominant genera. The Ba Lai estuary exhibited lower nematode densities but a higher diversity, while the genus composition only slightly differed between estuaries. The results indicate that the present nematode communities may be well adapted to the natural organic load, to the heavy metal accumulation and to the oxygen stress in both estuaries, but the dam presence may potentially continue to drive the Ba Lai's ecosystem to its tipping point
Synthesis of cuprous oxide nanocubes combined with chitosan nanoparticles and its application to p-nitrophenol degradation
For the first time, cuprous oxide nanocubes (Cu2O NCBs) were successfully combined with chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs) to generate Cu2O NCBs/CS NPs composites material with highly optical property and photocatalytic activity using a simple and eco-friendly synthetic approach at room temperature for 30 min. The synthesized Cu2O NCBs NPs/CS NPs were determined characterizations by Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X â ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Results show that the Cu2O NCBs/CS NPs composites have an average particle size of ~3-5 nm; in which, Cu2O has the form of nanocubes (Cu2O NCBs) with size ~3-4 nm and chitosan nanoparticles with spherical shape (CS NPs) with size ~4-5 nm. In addition, the percent (%) composition of elements present in Cu2O NCBs/CS NPs composites material have been obtained respective: Cu (23.99%), O (38.18%), and C (33.61%). Moreover, Cu2O NCBs/CS NPs composites material was also investigated for photocatalytic activity applied in p-nitrophenol degradation. The obtained results showed that the catalytic capability of Cu2O NCBs/CS NPs for p-nitrophenol reduction reached the highest efficiency >55% in the treatment time of 25 min, and this efficiency was higher than that result of using ZnO@chitosan nanoparticles (ZnO@CS NPs) catalyst under the same conditions for comparison
Does exporting spur firm productivity and promote inclusive growth? : evidence from Vietnam
Are exporting firms superior because only superior firms choose to become exporters or do they become superior by virtue of being exporters and having to face greater competition and to specialize in core activities? Findings show that the decision to export induces a gain in capital productivity for the new exporters, but no significant effect is observed for labour productivity and Total Factor Productivity (TFP). This result offers some support for the learning-by-exporting effect that occurs within a sector. Entry of Vietnamese firms into the world market can spur inclusive economic growth of the country
Epidemiological and molecular characteristics of Infectious bursal disease virus naturally infected in the broiler flocks in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam during 2015 and 2018
Infectious bursal disease is a highly contagious and economically devastating disease in the poultry industry worldwide caused by Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). However, the data on epidemiological and molecular characteristics of the IBDV outbreak in broiler flocks in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam is unclear. Herein, the epidemiological data of IBDVâpositive flocks over a period of 2015â2018 were recorded and the hypervariable region of the VP2 gene of IBDV was amplified to analyze the local phylogeny. The current investigation showed that the overall morbidity and mortality rates of IBDVâpositive flocks were 45% and 4.81%, respectively. The IBDVâpositive birds occurred clinical signs and macroscopic findings involved with the very virulent (vv) IBDV outbreak. Epidemiological results revealed that IBDV was frequently infected in broiler flocks at 12â42 days, and birds belonging to Tau Vang and Binh Dinh breeds were more sensitive to IBDV. Also, the morbidity rate of IBDV was dramatically decreased in the open farming system. Flocks with complete vaccination significantly dropped morbidity in comparison with other groups. Regarding phylogenetic analysis, all identified IBDV sequences clustered in the same branch of vv phenotype and closely homology with prior strains circulated in Vietnam and other countries. These findings first indicated the epidemiological characteristics of the IBDVâpositive broiler flocks in the Mekong Delta and highlighted the IBDV strain circulating in this region
Hydrogen production by newly isolated Clostridium species from cow rumen in pure- and co-cultures on a broad range of carbon sources
Three novel hydrogen-generating strains, ST1, ST4, and ST5, were isolated from the rumen of cow in Vietnam, and respectively identified as Clostridium beijerinckii ST1, Clostridium bifermentans ST4, and Clostridium butyricum ST5, based on 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis and physiobiochemical characteristics. The dark fermentative hydrogen production of these isolated Clostridium strains was performed and characterized in both pure- and co-cultures from various carbon sources including sucrose, glucose, lactose, xylose, molasses, cassava stumps, and rice distillers wet grains with soluble. The highest hydrogen production was achieved from a co-culture with three Clostridium strains. To optimize the operational conditions of temperature, time, and substrate concentration for the high-level production of hydrogen, response surface methodology in a Box-Behnken design was used. The results revealed a maximum hydrogen production of 1.13 ± 0.015 L H2/L medium by the three-strain co-culture under the following fermentation conditions: 11.63 g/L sucrose, 36.1 °C, in 51.13 h
