Numerical solution of steady-state groundwater flow and solute transport problems: Discontinuous Galerkin based methods compared to the Streamline Diffusion approach
In this study, we consider the simulation of subsurface flow and solute
transport processes in the stationary limit. In the convection-dominant case,
the numerical solution of the transport problem may exhibit non-physical
diffusion and under- and overshoots. For an interior penalty discontinuous
Galerkin (DG) discretization, we present a -adaptive refinement strategy
and, alternatively, a new efficient approach for reducing numerical under- and
overshoots using a diffusive -projection. Furthermore, we illustrate an
efficient way of solving the linear system arising from the DG discretization.
In -D and -D examples, we compare the DG-based methods to the streamline
diffusion approach with respect to computing time and their ability to resolve
steep fronts
Arabidopsis GLAUCE promotes fertilization-independent endosperm development and expression of paternally inherited alleles
Early seed development of sexually reproducing plants requires both maternal and paternal genomes but is prominently maternally influenced. A novel gametophytic maternal-effect mutant defective in early embryo and endosperm development, glauce ( glc), has been isolated from a population of Arabidopsis Ds transposon insertion lines. The glc mutation results from a deletion at the Ds insertion site, and the molecular identity of GLC is not known. glc embryos can develop up to the globular stage in the absence of endosperm and glc central cells appear to be unfertilized. glc suppresses autonomous endosperm development observed in the fertilization-independent seed ( fis) class mutants. glc is also epistatic to mea, one of the fis class mutants, in fertilized seeds, and is essential for the biparental embryonic expression of PHE1, a repressed downstream target of MEA. In addition, maternal GLC function is required for the paternal embryonic expression of the ribosome protein gene RPS5a and the AMP deaminase gene FAC1, both of which are essential for early embryo and endosperm development. These results indicate that factors derived from the female gametophyte activate a subset of the paternal genome of fertilized seeds
Measurement of the full distribution of the persistent current in normal-metal rings
We have measured the persistent current in individual normal metal rings over
a wide range of magnetic fields. From this data, we extract the first six
cumulants of the single-ring persistent current distribution. Our results are
consistent with the theoretical prediction that this distribution should be
nearly Gaussian (i.e., that these cumulants should be nearly zero) for
diffusive metallic rings. This measurement highlights the particular
sensitivity of persistent current to the mesoscopic fluctuations within a

Ontology based Approach for Precision Agriculture
In this paper, we propose a framework of knowledge for an agriculture
ontology which can be used for the purpose of smart agriculture systems. This
ontology not only includes basic concepts in the agricultural domain but also
contains geographical, IoT, business subdomains, and other knowledge extracted
from various datasets. With this ontology, any users can easily understand
agricultural data links between them collected from many different data
resources. In our experiment, we also import country, sub-country and disease
entities into this ontology as basic entities for building agricultural linked
datasets later
Crosstalk analysis of carbon nanotube bundle interconnects
Carbon nanotube (CNT) has been considered as an ideal interconnect material for replacing copper for future nanoscale IC technology due to its outstanding current carrying capability, thermal conductivity, and mechanical robustness. In this paper, crosstalk problems for single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) bundle interconnects are investigated; the interconnect parameters for SWCNT bundle are calculated first, and then the equivalent circuit has been developed to perform the crosstalk analysis. Based on the simulation results using SPICE simulator, the voltage of the crosstalk-induced glitch can be reduced by decreasing the line length, increasing the spacing between adjacent lines, or increasing the diameter of SWCNT
Providing High-Quality Care for Limited English Proficient Patients: The Importance of Language Concordance and Interpreter Use
Background: Provider–patient language discordance is related to worse quality care for limited English proficient (LEP) patients who speak Spanish. However, little is known about language barriers among LEP Asian-American patients. Objective: We examined the effects of language discordance on the degree of health education and the quality of interpersonal care that patients received, and examined its effect on patient satisfaction. We also evaluated how the presence/absence of a clinic interpreter affected these outcomes. Design: Cross-sectional survey, response rate 74%. Participants: A total of 2,746 Chinese and Vietnamese patients receiving care at 11 health centers in 8 cities. Measurements: Provider–patient language concordance, health education received, quality of interpersonal care, patient ratings of providers, and the presence/absence of a clinic interpreter. Regression analyses were used to adjust for potential confounding. Results: Patients with language-discordant providers reported receiving less health education (β = 0.17, p < 0.05) compared to those with language-concordant providers. This effect was mitigated with the use of a clinic interpreter. Patients with language-discordant providers also reported worse interpersonal care (β = 0.28, p < 0.05), and were more likely to give low ratings to their providers (odds ratio [OR] = 1.61; CI = 0.97–2.67). Using a clinic interpreter did not mitigate these effects and in fact exacerbated disparities in patients’ perceptions of their providers. Conclusion: Language barriers are associated with less health education, worse interpersonal care, and lower patient satisfaction. Having access to a clinic interpreter can facilitate the transmission of health education. However, in terms of patients’ ratings of their providers and the quality of interpersonal care, having an interpreter present does not serve as a substitute for language concordance between patient and provider
Experiences of refugees and asylum seekers in general practice: a qualitative study
Background: There has been much debate regarding the refugee health situation in the UK. However most of the existing literature fails to take account of the opinions of refugees themselves. This study was established to determine the views of asylum seekers and refugees on their overall experiences in primary care and to suggest improvements to their care. Methods: Qualitative study of adult asylum seekers and refugees who had entered the UK in the last 10 years. The study was set in Barnet Refugee Walk in Service, London. 11 Semi structured interviews were conducted and analysed using framework analysis. Results: Access to GPs may be more difficult for failed asylum seekers and those without support from refugee agencies or family. There may be concerns amongst some in the refugee community regarding the access to and confidentiality of professional interpreters. Most participants stated their preference for GPs who offered advice rather than prescriptions. The stigma associated with refugee status in the UK may have led to some refugees altering their help seeking behaviour. Conclusion: The problem of poor access for those with inadequate support may be improved by better education and support for GPs in how to provide for refugees. Primary Care Trusts could also supply information to newly arrived refugees on how to access services. GPs should be aware that, in some situations, professional interpreters may not always be desired and that instead, it may be advisable to reach a consensus as to who should be used as an interpreter. A better doctor-patient experience resulting from improvements in access and communication may help to reduce the stigma associated with refugee status and lead to more appropriate help seeking behaviour. Given the small nature of our investigation, larger studies need to be conducted to confirm and to quantify these results
Probing the isospin dependent mean field and nucleon nucleon cross section in the medium by the nucleon emissions
We study the isospin effects of the mean field and two-body collision on the
nucleon emissions at the intermediate energy heavy ion collisions by using an
isospin dependent transport theory. The calculated results show that the
nucleon emission number depends sensitively the isospin effect of
nucleon nucleon cross section and weakly on the isospin dependent mean field
for neutron-poor system in higher beam energy region . In particular, the
correlation between the medium correction of two-body collision and the
momentum dependent interaction enhances the dependence of nucleon emission
number on the isospin effect of nucleon nucleon cross section.
On the contrary, the ratio of the neutron proton ratio of the gas phase to
the neutron proton ratio of the liquid phase, i.e., the degree of isospin
fractionation depends sensitively on the
isospin dependent mean field and weakly on the isospin effect of two-body
collision for neutron-rich system in the lower beam energy region. In this
case, and are the probes for
extracting the information about the isospin dependent nucleon nucleon cross
