Hamiltonian approach to slip-stacking dynamics
Hamiltonian dynamics has been applied to study the slip-stacking dynamics.
The canonical-perturbation method is employed to obtain the second-harmonic
correction term in the slip-stacking Hamiltonian. The Hamiltonian approach
provides a clear optimal method for choosing the slip-stacking parameter and
improving stacking efficiency. The dynamics are applied specifically to the
Fermilab Booster-Recycler complex. The dynamics can also be applied to other

An underground cosmic ray muon telescope for observation of cosmic ray anisotropy
A telescope housed in a tunnel laboratory has an overburden of 573 hg cm(-2) and is located under the center of a saddle-shaped landscape. It is composed of triple layers of proportional counters, each layer of area approx. 4m x 2m and their separation 0.5m. Events are selected by triple coincidence and software track identification. The telescope is in operation for over a year and the overall count rate is 1280 hr(-1). The structure and operation of the system is reported
Chiral symmetry breaking in a uniform external magnetic field II. Symmetry restoration at high temperatures and chemical potentials
Chiral symmetry is dynamically broken in quenched, ladder QED at weak gauge
couplings when an external magnetic field is present. In this paper, we show
that chiral symmetry is restored above a critical chemical potential and the
corresponding phase transition is of first order. In contrast, the chiral
symmetry restoration at high temperatures (and at zero chemical potential) is a

Hormonal regulation of endometrial olfactomedin expression and its suppressive effect on spheroid attachment onto endometrial epithelial cells
Background Olfactomedin (Olfm) is a member of a diverse group of extracellular matrix proteins important for neuronal growth. Recent microarray studies identified Olfm as one of the down-regulated transcripts in receptive endometrium at the time of embryo attachment and implantation. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms that govern Olfm expression and its effect on embryo attachment and implantation remain unknown. Methods The expression of Olfm in the human endometrium was investigated by real-time PCR, western blotting and immunohistochemistry on human endometrial biopsies from natural and ovarian stimulated cycles. To investigate the function of Olfm in trophoblastendometrial cell attachment, an in vitro spheroid-endometrial cell co-culture study was performed. Results Human endometrial Olfactomedin-1 and -2(Olfm-1 and -2) transcripts decreased significantly from the proliferative to the secretory phases of the menstrual cycle. Olfm protein was strongly expressed in the luminal and glandular epithelium and moderately in the stromal cells of human endometria. Ovarian stimulation significantly decreased (P < 0.05) the expression of endometrial Olfm-1 and -2 transcripts in patients receiving IVF treatment when compared with those in the natural cycle. Importantly, recombinant Olfm-1 suppressed JAr spheroid attachment onto Ishikawa cells and this was not associated with changes of β-catenin and E-cadherin expression in trophoblast and endometrial cells. Conclusions Decreased expression of Olfm during the receptive phase of the endometrium may allow successful trophoblast attachment for implantation. © 2010 The Author.postprin
Chromium (VI) sorption on quaternized rice hulls
The sorption of Cr(VI) from synthetic solution and electroplating waste by quaternized rice hulls was investigated under laboratory conditions to assess its potential in removing Cr(VI). The results show that quaternized rice hulls provided higher sorption capacity and a more workable pH range as compared to the untreated rice hulls. From the Langmuir isotherm the maximum sorption capacity of Cr(VI) was 32.3 mg/g at pH 4.82 at 25°C. Column studies showed that Cr(VI) and Cu(ll) from electroplating waste could be successfully removed or reduced using a combination of untreated and quaternized rice hulls. New heat treatment to prepare high quality polycrystalline and single crystal MgB2 in single process
We report here on a new heat treatment to prepare both dense polycrystalline
and single crystal MgB2 high quality samples in one single process. Resistivity
measurements for polycrystalline part of the sample gives a residual
resistivity ratio RRR=16.6 and a very low normal state resistivity rho(40K)=
0.28 microOhmcm. Both SEM and SQUID study on polycrystals reveal the high
quality, dense character and well coupling of grain boundaries. On the other
hand, the high quality single crystals have a unique shape that resembles the
hexagonal crystal structure. SQUID measurements reveals very weak flux pinning
character implying our single crystals to be very clean. In this study, we
conclude that heat treatment is playing a major rule on the characteristics of
both polycrystalline and single crystal MgB2. Samples are thoroughly
characterized by x-ray, resistivity, dc SQUID and SEM
