Between concrete and abstract: the Malaysian Chinese way of naming dishes
The Chinese pay considerable attention to the naming of dishes. While coming up with a well-prepared cuisine is considered as an artwork, giving it a suitable name is no different from adding the touch that brings a work of art to life. In naming a dish, the community utilizes its linguistic and non-linguistic resources. Dish names are hence a group of living fossils supporting the notion of language reflecting society. Using 1077 samples of dish names collected from Malaysian Chinese weddings and the lunar new year celebration, the present paper aims to investigate the concrete and abstract naming of Chinese dishes, and discuss the common cultural considerations underlying them. It was found that concrete naming deals with the tangible aspects of a dish by incorporating method of preparation, taste/aroma, appearance of dish, as well as container used; while abstract naming draws support from four-character idioms, legends/historical events, auspicious words, Chinese auspicious objects and legendary animals, and homophones, with cultural considerations playing a major if not the sole role in it
Enhancing a Fuzzy Failure Mode and Effect Analysis methodology with an Analogical Reasoning Technique
In this paper, a fuzzy Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) methodology incorporating an analogical reasoning technique is presented. FMEA methodology was introduced as a formal and systematic procedure for evaluation of risk associated with potential failure modes in the 1960s. Bowles and Pel´aez [1] proposed a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS)-based Risk Priority Number (RPN) model as an alternative to the conventional RPN model. For an FIS-based RPN (a three-input FIS model), a large set of fuzzy rules are required, and it is tedious to collect the full set of rules. With the grid partition strategy, the number of fuzzy rules required increases in an exponential manner, and this phenomenon is known as the “curse of dimensionality” or the combinatorial rule explosion problem. Hence, a rule selection and similarity reasoning technique, i.e., Approximate Analogical Reasoning Schema (AARS) technique are implemented in a fuzzy FMEA in order to solve the problem. The experiment was conducted using a set of data collected from a semiconductor manufacturing line, i.e., underfill dispensing process, and promising results were obtained
Anti–hypercholesterolemic effect of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) seed on high–fat diet Sprague dawley rats
AbstractObjectiveTo determine the antihypercholesterolemic effects of kenaf seed samples and compare with the commercial hypocholesterolemic drug on serum lipids profiles and malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the rat.MethodsKenaf seed oil (KSO), microencapsulated kenaf seed oil (MKSO), kenaf seed extract (KSE) and defatted kenaf seed meal (DKSM) were prepared and phytochemicals screening on these samples were done prior in vivo study. Phenolic compounds in KSE were quantified using high performance liquid chromatography. There were 40 (divided in eight diet groups of 5) male Sprague dawley rats adapted to normal standard diet or hypercholesterolemic diet (HD) with or without the treatment of these kenaf samples for 32 days.ResultsAll the kenaf samples exhibited to contain most of the major phytochemicals. KSE possessed gallic acid, tannic acid, catechin, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, syringic acid, sinapic acid, ferulic acid, naringin acid, and protocatechuic acid. The significant higher (P<0.05) serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and MDA levels in HD group without treatment than the normal control group suggested the hypercholesterolemia was induced by the incorporation of cholesterol into diet. KSE exhibited higher cholesterol–lowering properties due to the significant lower (P<0.05) in serum triglycerides, total cholesterol and MDA levels. KSE showed the highest efficiency of cholesterol–lowering activity, followed by KSO, MKSO and DKSM.ConclusionsDKSM, MKSO, KSO and KSE appeared to have comparable anti–hypercholesterolemic effect with the commercial hypocholesterolemic drug. Hence, kenaf seed could be used as an alternative natural source to replace the synthetic hypocholesterolemic drugs
Direct Evidence of the Exfoliation Efficiency and Graphene Dispersibility of Green Solvents toward Sustainable Graphene Production
Achieving a sustainable production of pristine high-quality graphene and other layered materials at a low cost is one of the bottlenecks that needs to be overcome for reaching 2D material applications at a large scale. Liquid phase exfoliation in conjunction with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is recognized as the most efficient method for both the exfoliation and dispersion of graphene. Unfortunately, NMP is neither sustainable nor suitable for up-scaling production due to its adverse impact on the environment. Here, we show the real potential of green solvents by revealing the independent contributions of their exfoliation efficiency and graphene dispersibility to the graphene yield. By experimentally separating these two factors, we demonstrate that the exfoliation efficiency of a given solvent is independent of its dispersibility. Our studies revealed that isopropanol can be used to exfoliate graphite as efficiently as NMP. Our finding is corroborated by the matching ratio between the polar and dispersive energies of graphite and that of the solvent surface tension. This direct evidence of exfoliation efficiency and dispersibility of solvents paves the way to developing a deeper understanding of the real potential of sustainable graphene manufacturing at a large scale

Aberrant Transferrin and Ferritin Upregulation Elicits Iron Accumulation and Oxidative Inflammaging Causing Ferroptosis and Undermines Estradiol Biosynthesis in Aging Rat Ovaries by Upregulating NF-Κb-Activated Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase: First Demonstration of an Intricate Mechanism
We report herein a novel mechanism, unraveled by proteomics and validated by in vitro and in vivo studies, of the aberrant aging-associated upregulation of ovarian transferrin and ferritin in rat ovaries. The ovarian mass and serum estradiol titer plummeted while the ovarian labile ferrous iron and total iron levels escalated with age in rats. Oxidative stress markers, such as nitrite/nitrate, 3-nitrotyrosine, and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, accumulated in the aging ovaries due to an aberrant upregulation of the ovarian transferrin, ferritin light/heavy chains, and iron regulatory protein 2(IRP2)-mediated transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1). Ferritin inhibited estradiol biosynthesis in ovarian granulosa cells in vitro via the upregulation of a nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) and p65/p50-induced oxidative and inflammatory factor inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). An in vivo study demonstrated how the age-associated activation of NF-κB induced the upregulation of iNOS and the tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα). The downregulation of the keap1-mediated nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), that induced a decrease in glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), was observed. The aberrant transferrin and ferritin upregulation triggered an iron accumulation via the upregulation of an IRP2-induced TfR1. This culminates in NF-κB-iNOS-mediated ovarian oxi-inflamm-aging and serum estradiol decrement in naturally aging rats. The iron accumulation and the effect on ferroptosis-related proteins including the GPX4, TfR1, Nrf2, Keap1, and ferritin heavy chain, as in testicular ferroptosis, indicated the triggering of ferroptosis. In young rats, an intraovarian injection of an adenovirus, which expressed iron regulatory proteins, upregulated the ovarian NF-κB/iNOS and downregulated the GPX4. These novel findings have contributed to a prompt translational research on the ovarian aging-associated iron metabolism and aging-associated ovarian diseases

Direct evidence of exfoliation efficiency and graphene dispersibility of green solvents towards sustainable graphene production
Achieving sustainable production of pristine high-quality graphene and other layered materials at low cost is one of the bottlenecks that needs to be overcome for reaching 2D materials applications at scale. Liquid Phase Exfoliation (LPE) in conjunction with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is recognised as the most efficient method for both the exfoliation and dispersion of graphene. Unfortunately, NMP is neither sustainable nor suitable for up-scaling production due to its adverse impact on the environment. Here we show the real potential of green solvents by revealing the independent contributions of their exfoliation efficiency and graphene dispersibility to the graphene yield.
