    Human System Engineering Applications from Distracted Driving Simulations

    Most of the studies to explore the impact of distracted driving have been descriptive in nature; i.e. the research is conducted in naturalistic settings to evaluate the performance of the driver with and without distracters. However simulation models can also be used that predict the workload for driving tasks. Using concepts from process modeling, baseline models of driving tasks can be created for different driving sequences that include the associated fine motor, visual and cognitive human resources. These models can then be used to evaluate incidents of workload overload caused by different distracters, from both the internal and external vehicle environment. Identifying specific overloaded resources can lead to mitigation strategies to reduce workload and minimize distracted driving. Lessons learned from distracted driving research can then be applied to evaluation other types of manual, visual, and cognitive intensive tasks. Identifying combinations of tasks that contribute to peak workload of operators, and then simulating the impact of multi-tasking using personal devices (i.e. cell phones) can lead to management insights for other types of work environments. Additionally, iterative modeling can also include the impact of sensors and alerts, as well as enhanced workstation displays. Individual component overload can help understand causes for performance detriments during different task sequences, and the impact of additional types of technologies and activities. Using the simulation analysis, the impact on overall workload, identification of peak workload occurrences, and specific overloaded resources can lead to mitigation strategies to reduce workload and improve operator performance

    Guided wave-based characterisation of cracks in pipes utilising approximate Bayesian computation

    Available online 29 August 2023This paper proposed a probabilistic framework of damage characterisation to detect and identify early-state cracks in pipe-like structures using ultrasonic guided waves. The crack location, crack sizes (e.g., depth and width of the crack), and Young’s modulus are considered as unknown parameters in the model updating using a Bayesian approach, by which their values and the associated uncertainties are quantified. The proposed framework is developed based on approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) by subset simulation, which is a likelihood-free Bayesian approach. This algorithm estimates the posterior distributions of unknown parameters by directly accessing the similarity between the measured signals from experiments and the simulated guided wave (GW) signals from the numerical model. In this case, the evaluation of likelihood functions can be smartly circumvented during Bayesian inference. A time-domain spectral finite element (SFE) method with a cracked finite element model is employed to model the pipes to enhance the computational efficiency of the simulation and model updating. Numerical and experimental case studies are carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed likelihood-free approach. Numerical results show the accuracy and robustness of the proposed approach in identifying unknown parameters under different scenarios. The associated uncertainties of each parameter are also quantified by analysing the statistical properties of the sample set, such as mean and coefficient of variation (COV) values. Experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately identify the unknown parameters, which further verifies the accuracy and practicability of the probabilistic damage characterisation framework.Zijie Zeng, Min Gao, Ching Tai Ng, Abdul Hamid Sheik

    "quasi-particles" in bosonization theory of interacting fermion liquids at arbitrary dimensions

    Within bosonization theory we introduce in this paper a new definition of "quasi-particles" for interacting fermions at arbitrary space dimenions. In dimensions higher than one we show that the constructed quasi-particles are consistent with quasi-particle descriptions in Landau Fermi liquid theory whereas in one-dimension the quasi-particles" are non-perturbative objects (spinons and holons) obeying fractional statistics.     Whole blood transcriptional responses of very preterm infants during late-onset sepsis

    Background Host immune responses during late-onset sepsis (LOS) in very preterm infants are poorly characterised due to a complex and dynamic pathophysiology and challenges in working with small available blood volumes. We present here an unbiased transcriptomic analysis of whole peripheral blood from very preterm infants at the time of LOS. Methods RNA-Seq was performed on peripheral blood samples (6–29 days postnatal age) taken at the time of suspected LOS from very preterm infants <30 weeks gestational age. Infants were classified based on blood culture positivity and elevated C-reactive protein concentrations as having confirmed LOS (n = 5), possible LOS (n = 4) or no LOS (n = 9). Bioinformatics and statistical analyses performed included pathway over-representation and protein-protein interaction network analyses. Plasma cytokine immunoassays were performed to validate differentially expressed cytokine pathways. Results The blood leukocyte transcriptional responses of infants with confirmed LOS differed significantly from infants without LOS (1,317 differentially expressed genes). However, infants with possible LOS could not be distinguished from infants with no LOS or confirmed LOS. Transcriptional alterations associated with LOS included genes involved in pathogen recognition (mainly TLR pathways), cytokine signalling (both pro-inflammatory and inhibitory responses), immune and haematological regulation (including cell death pathways), and metabolism (altered cholesterol biosynthesis). At the transcriptional-level cytokine responses during LOS were characterised by over-representation of IFN-α/β, IFN-γ, IL-1 and IL-6 signalling pathways and up-regulation of genes for inflammatory responses. Infants with confirmed LOS had significantly higher levels of IL-1α and IL-6 in their plasma. Conclusions Blood responses in very preterm infants with LOS are characterised by altered host immune responses that appear to reflect unbalanced immuno-metabolic homeostasis

    Analysis of CMB polarization on an incomplete sky

    The full sky cosmic microwave background polarization field can be decomposed into 'electric' and 'magnetic' components. Working in harmonic space we construct window functions that allow clean separation of the electric and magnetic modes from observations over only a portion of the sky. Our construction is exact for azimuthally symmetric patches, but should continue to perform well for arbitrary patches. From the window functions we obtain variables that allow for robust estimation of the magnetic component without risk of contamination from the probably much larger electric signal. For isotropic, uncorrelated noise the variables have a very simple diagonal noise correlation, and further analysis using them should be no harder than analysing the temperature field. For an azimuthally-symmetric patch, such as that obtained from survey missions when the galactic region is removed, the exactly-separated variables are fast to compute allowing us to estimate the magnetic signal that could be detected by the Planck satellite in the absence of non-galactic foregrounds. We also discuss the sensitivity of future experiments to tensor modes in the presence of a magnetic signal generated by weak lensing, and give lossless methods for analysing the electric polarization field in the case that the magnetic component is negligible.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures.     The Effect of Nicotine Dependence on Psychopathology in Patients with Schizophrenia

    Introduction. Our study aims to determine the prevalence of nicotine dependence and investigate the effect of nicotine dependence on psychopathology among schizophrenia patients. Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out in an outpatient psychiatric clinic at a general hospital in Malaysia. 180 recruited subjects were administered the Malay version of Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS), and the Malay version of Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND-M) questionnaires. Results. The prevalence of nicotine dependence among the subjects was 38.1% () and they were mainly composed of male gender, Malay ethnicity, being treated with atypical antipsychotics, and taking other illicit drugs or alcohol. Subjects with severe nicotine dependence scored less in the negative subscale of PANSS compared with the nonsmokers (). On performing the hierarchy multiple regressions, dependence status still significantly predicted negative scores after adjusting the confounders (, ). Conclusion. The rate of nicotine use disorder among schizophrenia patients in this study is higher than that of the general population in Malaysia. The significant association between nicotine dependence and negative psychopathology symptoms will help the healthcare practitioners in their management of nicotine dependence among schizophrenia patients

    Hawking Temperature in Taub-NUT (A)dS spaces via the Generalized Uncertainty Principle

    Using the extended forms of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle from string theory and the quantum gravity theory, we drived Hawking temperature of a Taub-Nut-(A)dS black hole. In spite of their distinctive natures such as asymptotically locally flat and breakdown of the area theorem of the horizon for the black holes, we show that the corrections to Hawking temperature by the generalized versions of the the Heisenberg uncertainty principle increases like the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole and give the reason why the Taub-Nut-(A)dS metric may have AdS/CFT dual picture.Comment: version published in General Relativity and Gravitatio
