    Father-daughter Incest: Comparison of Treated Cases to Untreated Control Subjects

    Treatment of father daughter incest (FDI) survivors using the victim advocacy/child welfare approach to FDI that predominates today in the US has never been compared to results in untreated control subjects in any published report. In the present study, thirty-two survivors of FDI who received treatment based on the victim advocacy/child welfare approach to FDI were compared to 32 control subjects who did not receive treatment. No significant differences were found using analysis of variance on 21 scales and subscales. Statistical analysis of the data from all 64 of the FDI survivors showed that items reflecting a poor self-image and a history of maternal depression predicted more problematic scores on the depression scale. Those who scored higher on religiosity were less likely to be depressed. Redesigned therapy for FDI aimed, first and foremost, at healing the survivors and validated by prospective randomized trials is needed

    Stable isotope analysis provides new information on winter habitat use of declining avian migrants that is relevant to their conservation

    Winter habitat use and the magnitude of migratory connectivity are important parameters when assessing drivers of the marked declines in avian migrants. Such information is unavailable for most species. We use a stable isotope approach to assess these factors for three declining African-Eurasian migrants whose winter ecology is poorly known: wood warbler Phylloscopus sibilatrix, house martin Delichon urbicum and common swift Apus apus. Spatially segregated breeding wood warbler populations (sampled across a 800 km transect), house martins and common swifts (sampled across a 3,500 km transect) exhibited statistically identical intra-specific carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios in winter grown feathers. Such patterns are compatible with a high degree of migratory connectivity, but could arise if species use isotopically similar resources at different locations. Wood warbler carbon isotope ratios are more depleted than typical for African-Eurasian migrants and are compatible with use of moist lowland forest. The very limited variance in these ratios indicates specialisation on isotopically restricted resources, which may drive the similarity in wood warbler populations' stable isotope ratios and increase susceptibility to environmental change within its wintering grounds. House martins were previously considered to primarily use moist montane forest during the winter, but this seems unlikely given the enriched nature of their carbon isotope ratios. House martins use a narrower isotopic range of resources than the common swift, indicative of increased specialisation or a relatively limited wintering range; both factors could increase house martins' vulnerability to environmental change. The marked variance in isotope ratios within each common swift population contributes to the lack of population specific signatures and indicates that the species is less vulnerable to environmental change in sub-Saharan Africa than our other focal species. Our findings demonstrate how stable isotope research can contribute to understanding avian migrants' winter ecology and conservation status

    SN 2022crv: IIb, Or Not IIb: That is the Question

    We present optical and near-infrared observations of SN~2022crv, a stripped envelope supernova in NGC~3054, discovered within 12 hrs of explosion by the Distance Less Than 40 Mpc Survey. We suggest SN~2022crv is a transitional object on the continuum between SNe Ib and SNe IIb. A high-velocity hydrogen feature (∼\sim−-20,000 -- −-16,000 km s−1\rm km\,s^{-1}) was conspicuous in SN~2022crv at early phases, and then quickly disappeared around maximum light. By comparing with hydrodynamic modeling, we find that a hydrogen envelope of ∼10−3\sim 10^{-3} \msun{} can reproduce the behaviour of the hydrogen feature observed in SN~2022crv. The early light curve of SN~2022crv did not show envelope cooling emission, implying that SN~2022crv had a compact progenitor with extremely low amount of hydrogen. The analysis of the nebular spectra shows that SN~2022crv is consistent with the explosion of a He star with a final mass of ∼\sim4.5 -- 5.6 \msun{} that has evolved from a ∼\sim16 -- 22 \msun{} zero-age main sequence star in a binary system with about 1.0 -- 1.7 \msun{} of oxygen finally synthesized in the core. The high metallicity at the supernova site indicates that the progenitor experienced a strong stellar wind mass loss. In order to retain a small amount of residual hydrogen at such a high metallicity, the initial orbital separation of the binary system is likely larger than ∼\sim1000~R⊙\rm R_{\odot}. The near-infrared spectra of SN~2022crv show a unique absorption feature on the blue side of He I line at ∼\sim1.005~μ\mum. This is the first time that such a feature has been observed in a Type Ib/IIb, and could be due to \ion{Sr}{2}. Further detailed modelling on SN~2022crv can shed light on the progenitor and the origin of the mysterious absorption feature in the near infrared.Comment: 33 pages, 23 figures, submitted to Ap

    Strong Carbon Features and a Red Early Color in the Underluminous Type Ia SN 2022xkq

    We present optical, infrared, ultraviolet, and radio observations of SN 2022xkq, an underluminous fast-declining type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in NGC 1784 (D≈31\mathrm{D}\approx31 Mpc), from <1<1 to 180 days after explosion. The high-cadence observations of SN 2022xkq, a photometrically transitional and spectroscopically 91bg-like SN Ia, cover the first days and weeks following explosion which are critical to distinguishing between explosion scenarios. The early light curve of SN 2022xkq has a red early color and exhibits a flux excess which is more prominent in redder bands; this is the first time such a feature has been seen in a transitional/91bg-like SN Ia. We also present 92 optical and 19 near-infrared (NIR) spectra, beginning 0.4 days after explosion in the optical and 2.6 days after explosion in the NIR. SN 2022xkq exhibits a long-lived C I 1.0693 μ\mum feature which persists until 5 days post-maximum. We also detect C II λ\lambda6580 in the pre-maximum optical spectra. These lines are evidence for unburnt carbon that is difficult to reconcile with the double detonation of a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf. No existing explosion model can fully explain the photometric and spectroscopic dataset of SN 2022xkq, but the considerable breadth of the observations is ideal for furthering our understanding of the processes which produce faint SNe Ia.Comment: 38 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, the figure 15 input models and synthetic spectra are now available at https://zenodo.org/record/837925

    A Multicenter Observational Cohort Study of Angiotensin II in Shock

    © The Author(s) 2020. Introduction: Angiotensin II (Ang-2) is a non-catecholamine vasopressor that targets the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system by agonism of the angiotensin type 1 receptor. Its utility as a vasopressor and a catecholamine-sparing agent was demonstrated in the pivotal ATHOS-3 trial, and numerous post-hoc analyses have shown reduced mortality in certain subsets of the population. Methods: Consecutive adult patients at 5 centers who received Ang-2 from 2017-2020 were included in this multicenter, retrospective observational cohort study. Patient demographics, hemodynamics, and adverse events were collected. The primary outcomes of the study were the mean difference in MAP and norepinephrine (NEpi)-equivalent dose at hours 0 and 3 following initiation of Ang-2 therapy. Results: One hundred and sixty-two patients were included in this study. The primary outcomes of an increase in MAP (mean difference 9.3 mmHg, 95% CI 6.4-12.1, p \u3c 0.001) and a reduction in NEpi equivalent dose (mean difference 0.16 µg/kg/min, 95% CI 0.10-0.22, p \u3c 0.001) between hours 0 and 3 were statistically significant. The median time to reach a MAP ≥65 was 16 minutes (IQR 5-60 min). After stratifying patients by the NED dose and number of vasopressors administered prior to the initiation of Ang-2, those with a NED dose \u3c 0.2 µg/kg/min, NED dose \u3c 0.3 µg/kg/min, or those on ≤ 3 vasopressors had a significantly greater reduction in NED by hour 3 than those patients above these thresholds. Conclusion: Ang-2 is an effective vasopressor and reduces catecholamine dose significantly. Its effect is rapid, with target MAP obtained within 30 minutes in most patients. Given the critical importance of adequate blood pressure to organ perfusion, Ang-2 should be considered when target MAP cannot be achieved with conventional vasopressors. Ang-2 should be utilized early in the course of shock, before the NED dose exceeds 0.2-0.3 µg/kg/min and before the initiation of the fourth-line vasopressor
