    Observations on the vibration of axially-tensioned elastomeric pipes conveying fluids

    A study of the effect of axial tension on the vibration of a single-span elastomeric pipe clamped at both ends conveying fluid has been carried out both experimentally and theoretically. A new mathematical model using a penalty function technique and the method of kinematic correction and fictitious loads has been developed. The influence of flowing fluid and axial tension on natural frequencies and mode shapes of the system has been described using this model and compared with experimental observations. Linear and non-linear dynamic response of the harmonically excited pipe has also been investigated for varying flow velocities and initial axial tensions

    Legal and biotic boundaries of western North American national parks: A problem of congruence

    The boundaries of a national park may be defined in terms of its legal and biotic boundaries. The legal boundaries are the boundaries established by the highest legislative authority of a country. The biotic boundaries are hypothetical boundaries which would be necessary to maintain existing ecological processes and a given assemblage of species within a national park. Practically, the biotic boundaries are defined as those hypothetical boundaries encompassing the entire watershed of a park and an area of sufficient size to maintain a minimum viable population (MVP) for the terrestrial non-volant species with the largest home range found within the current legal boundaries. The legal and biotic boundaries for eight of the largest continental national parks and park assemblages in western North America were examined for congruence. The legal boundaries for seven of the eight parks/park assemblages were found to be larger than the biotic boundaries by a factor of 1[middle dot]2-9[middle dot]6 for a MVP=50 and 6[middle dot]0-96[middle dot]0 for a MVP=500. One to seven percent of all the mammals, excluding chiropterans, found currently in seven of the eight national parks/park assemblages have an area requirement (MVP=50 x home range) exceeding the legal boundaries. It is urgent while an opportunity exists that an active effort be made to enhance the congruence of the legal and biotic boundaries of these parks and park assemblages through the cooperative management of adjacent public and private lands so as to minimize the potential loss of wildlife.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/25863/1/0000426.pd

    Evolution along the Great Rift Valley: phenotypic and genetic differentiation of East African white-eyes (Aves, Zosteropidae)

    The moist and cool cloud forests of East Africa represent a network of isolated habitats that are separated by dry and warm lowland savannah, offering an opportunity to investigate how strikingly different selective regimes affect species diversification. Here, we used the passerine genus Zosterops (white-eyes) from this region as our model system. Species of the genus occur in contrasting distribution settings, with geographical mountain isolation driving diversification, and savannah interconnectivity preventing differentiation. We analyze (1) patterns of phenotypic and genetic differentiation in high- and lowland species (different distribution settings), (2) investigate the potential effects of natural selection and temporal and spatial isolation (evolutionary drivers), and (3) critically review the taxonomy of this species complex. We found strong phenotypic and genetic differentiation among and within the three focal species, both in the highland species complex and in the lowland taxa. Altitude was a stronger predictor of phenotypic patterns than the current taxonomic classification. We found longitudinal and latitudinal phenotypic gradients for all three species. Furthermore, wing length and body weight were significantly correlated with altitude and habitat type in the highland species Z.poliogaster. Genetic and phenotypic divergence showed contrasting inter- and intraspecific structures. We suggest that the evolution of phenotypic characters is mainly driven by natural selection due to differences in the two macro-habitats, cloud forest and savannah. In contrast, patterns of neutral genetic variation appear to be rather driven by geographical isolation of the respective mountain massifs. Populations of the Z.poliogaster complex, as well as Z.senegalensis and Z.abyssinicus, are not monophyletic based on microsatellite data and have higher levels of intraspecific differentiation compared to the currently accepted species

    mwr Xer site-specific recombination is hypersensitive to DNA supercoiling

    The multiresistance plasmid pJHCMW1, first identified in a Klebsiella pneumoniae strain isolated from a neonate with meningitis, includes a Xer recombination site, mwr, with unique characteristics. Efficiency of resolution of mwr-containing plasmid dimers is strongly dependent on the osmotic pressure of the growth medium. An increase in supercoiling density of plasmid DNA was observed as the osmotic pressure of the growth culture decreased. Reporter plasmids containing directly repeated mwr, or the related cer sites were used to test if DNA topological changes were correlated with significant changes in efficiency of Xer recombination. Quantification of Holliday junctions showed that while recombination at cer was efficient at all levels of negative supercoiling, recombination at mwr became markedly less efficient as the level of supercoiling was reduced. These results support a model in which modifications at the level of supercoiling density caused by changes in the osmotic pressure of the culture medium affects resolution of mwr-containing plasmid dimers, a property that separates mwr from other Xer recombination target sites

    Neutral-current neutrino cross section and expected supernova signals for 40^{40}Ar from a three-fold increase in the magnetic dipole strength

    In view of the great interest in liquid argon neutrino detectors, the 40^{40}Ar(γ,γ\gamma,\gamma')40^{40}Ar^{*} reaction was revisited to guide a calculation of the neutral current neutrino cross section at supernova energies. Using the nuclear resonance fluorescence technique with a monoenergetic, 99% linearly polarized photon beam, we report a three-fold increase in magnetic dipole strength at around 10 MeV in 40^{40}Ar. Based on shell-model calculations, and using the experimentally identified transitions, the neutral current neutrino cross sections for low-energy reactions on 40^{40}Ar are calculated

    Two major theories of community assembly - based on the assumption of limiting similarity' or 'habitat filtering', respectively - predict contrasting patterns in the spatial arrangement of functional traits. Previous analyses have made progress in testing these predictions and identifying underlying processes, but have also pointed to theoretical as well as methodological shortcomings. Here we applied a recently developed methodology for spatially explicit analysis of phylogenetic meta-community structure to study the pattern of co-occurrence of functional traits in Afrotropical and Neotropical bird species inhabiting forest fragments. Focusing separately on locomotory, dietary, and dispersal traits, we tested whether environmental filtering causes spatial clustering, or competition leads to spatial segregation as predicted by limiting similarity theory. We detected significant segregation of species co-occurrences in African fragments, but not in the Neotropical ones. Interspecific competition had a higher impact on trait co-occurrence than filter effects, yet no single functional trait was able to explain the observed degree of spatial segregation among species. Despite high regional variability spanning from spatial segregation to aggregation, we found a consistent tendency for a clustered spatial patterning of functional traits among communities in fragmented landscapes, particularly in non-territorial species. Overall, we show that behavioural effects, such as territoriality, and environmental effects, such as the area of forest remnants or properties of the landscape matrix in which they are embedded, can strongly affect the pattern of trait co-occurrence. Our findings suggest that trait-based analyses of community structure should include behavioural and environmental covariates, and we here provide an appropriate method for linking functional traits, species ecology and environmental conditions to clarify the drivers underlying spatial patterns of species co-occurrence
