Tagged jets and jet reconstruction as a probe of QGP induced partonic energy loss

Recent experimental advances at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the large center-of-mass energies available to the heavy-ion program at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will enable strongly interacting matter at high temperatures and densities, that is, the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), to be probed in unprecedented ways. Among these exciting new probes are fully-reconstructed inclusive jets and the away-side hadron showers associated with a weakly or electromagnetically interacting boson, or, tagged jets. Full jet reconstruction provides an experimental window into the mechanisms of quark and gluon dynamics in the QGP which is not accessible via leading particles and leading particle correlations. Theoretical advances in this growing field can help resolve some of the most controversial points in heavy ion physics today. I here discuss the power of jets to reveal the spectrum of induced radiation, thereby shedding light on the applicability of the commonly used energy loss formalisms and present results on the production and subsequent suppression of high energy jets tagged with Z bosons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies using the Gyulassy-Levai-Vitev (GLV) parton energy loss approach.Comment: Proceedings for the Jets in Proton-Proton and Heavy-Ion Collisions Workshop held in Prague this August. 5 pages and 4 figure

S-Link to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter New Frame Segmentation for LHCb Data Acquisition System

    Get PDF
Data Acquisition and Control Systems used in high energy physics experiments, such as those which will take place in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, require the specification of data formats and transmission protocols as well as the use of high speed links and interfaces. In this context, a new Frame Segmentation process will be presented and discussed, based on data formats adopted by the LHCb experience for the interconnection of two standardized systems: S-link and Gigabit Ethernet. Simulation results of the transfer capacity of the proposed mechanism will be also reported, together with guidelines for its physical implementation.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. Formal Innovations to Clinical Cognitive Science and Assessment

    Get PDF
Mathematical modeling is increasingly driving progress in clinical cognitive science and assessment. Mathematical modeling is essential for detecting certain effects of psychopathology – mental disturbance--through comprehensive understanding of tell-tale cognitive variables such as workload capacity and efficiency in using capacity, and their contrast under quantitative measurement. The research paradigm guiding this formal clinical science is outlined. An example using a distinctive cognitive abnormality in schizophrenia – taking longer to cognitively represent encountered stimulation – provides an illustration of a quantitative framework for studying intricate mental health-impairing phenomena. Added benefits of formal developments, among others, include symptom description and prediction, new methods of cognitive- and statistical-science grounded clinical assessment over time, both for individuals and treatment regimens, and refinement of the cognitive-function side of clinical functional neuroimaging

Drainage Issues in the Atlantic Canada Offshore Petroleum Industry

    Get PDF
In this article, the authors examine the issue of drainage in the Atlantic Canada offshore. The offshore statutory regimes for production of oil and gas, together with the common law, are analyzed for their approaches to dealing with drainage issues. In addition, the law of drainage in Alberta is comprehensively reviewed to provide some guidance as to how the law of drainage may develop in Atlantic Canada

The impact of violent gaming on the brain as a function of individual differences in trait empathy

    Get PDF
In this project, we will uncover any existing interaction between violent media and the capacity for empathic reactions (known as trait empathy) at a neural level, as the foundational milestone for the kind of large-scale study discussed above. The level of trait empathy varies by individual - we will explore whether exposure to violent media exacerbates the difficulties that those with low trait empathy already show in relating to the emotions of othershttps://ir.lib.uwo.ca/brainscanprojectsummaries/1021/thumbnail.jp

New packet fragmentation for S-link to giiga bit ethernet adapter

    Get PDF
High Speed Interconnect (HSI) systems are essential in order to transport the large amount of data generated by the detectors, to storage devices in high energy physics experiments. The integration of a new packet fragmentation mechanism on the S-Link to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter will permit not only the physical interconnection between involved interfaces, but also the conversion of data formats and transmission protocols. This paper presents and discusses simulation results of the S-Link to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, with and without the new packet fragmentation mechanism, based on the data format adopted in the LHCb experiment

ACC Neuro-over-Connectivity Is Associated with Mathematically Modeled Additional Encoding Operations of Schizophrenia Stroop-Task Performance

    Get PDF
Functional magnetic resonance imaging at 7.0 Tesla was undertaken among Schizophrenia participants (Sz), and clinical (major mood disorder; MDD) and healthy controls (HC), during performance of the Stoop task. Stroop conditions included congruent and incongruent word color items, color-only items, and word-only items. Previous modeling results extended to this most widely used selective-attention task. All groups executed item-encoding operations (subprocesses of the item encoding process) at the same rate (performance accuracy being similarly high throughout), thus displaying like processing capacity; Sz participants, however, employed more subprocesses for item completions than did the MDD participants, who in turn used more subprocesses than the HC group. The reduced efficiency in deploying cognitive-workload capacity among the Sz participants was paralleled by more diffuse neuroconnectivity (Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependent co-activation) with the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) (Broadman Area 32), spreading away from this encoding-intensive region; and by less evidence of network dissociation across Stroop conditions. Estimates of cognitive work done to accomplish item completion were greater for the Sz participants, as were estimates of entropy in both the modeled trial-latency distribution, and its associated neuro-circuitry. Findings are held to be symptom and assessment significant, and to have potential implications for clinical intervention
