    QCD Sum Rules Calculation of Heavy Λ\Lambda Semileptonic Decay

    We set up sum rules for heavy lambda decays in a full QCD calculation which in the heavy quark mass limit incorporates the symmetries of heavy quark effective theory. For the semileptonic \La_c decay we obtain a reasonable agreement with experiment. For the \La_b semileptonic decay we find at the zero recoil point a violation of the heavy quark symmetry of about 20%.Comment: Revised version. Title changed. 11 pages (RevTex), 4 PS figure

    Low temperature phase diagram and critical behaviour of the four-state chiral clock model

    The low temperature behaviour of the four-state chiral clock (CC4CC_4) model is reexamined using a systematic low temperature series expansion of the free energy. Previously obtained results for the low temperature phases are corrected and the low temperature phase diagram is derived. In addition, the phase transition from the modulated region to the high temperature paraphase is shown to belong to the universality class of the 3d-XY model.Comment: 17 pages in ioplppt style, 3 figure

    Long-range two-body final-state interactions and direct CP asymmetry in {B}^{+}\to{\pi}^{+} {K}^{0} decay

    We present a calculation of the direct CP asymmetry, ACPdirA_{CP}^{dir}, for the process B+→π+K0B^+ \to \pi^+ K^0 including the effects of long-range inelastic final-state interactions (FSI). We admit three channels in our calculation: B+→(π+K0),(ηK+)B^+ \to (\pi^+ K^0), (\eta K^+), and (Ds+Dˉ0)(D_s^+ \bar{D}^0). The strong scattering is described in terms of Pomeron and Regge exchanges. We find that the direct CP asymmetry is enhanced by a factor of ∼3\sim 3 as a result of FSI, but remains well short of the claims of (10 - 20)% in recent literature.     The decay constants of pseudoscalar mesons in a relativistic quark model

    The decay constants of pseudoscalar mesons are calculated in a relativistic quark model which assumes that mesons are made of a valence quark antiquark pair and of an effective vacuum like component. The results are given in terms of quark masses and of some free parameters entering the expression of the internal wave functions of the mesons. By using the pion and kaon decay constants Fπ+=130.7 MeV, FK+=159.8 MeVF_{\pi^+}=130.7~MeV,~F_{K^+}=159.8~MeV to fix the parameters of the model one gets 60 MeV≤FD+≤185 MeV, 95 MeV≤FDs≤230 MeV, 80 MeV≤FB+≤205 MeV60~MeV\leq F_{D^+}\leq 185~MeV,~95~MeV\leq F_{D_s}\leq230~MeV,~80~MeV\leq F_{B^+}\leq205~MeV for the light quark masses mu=5.1 MeV, md=9.3 MeV, ms=175 MeVm_u=5.1~MeV,~m_d=9.3~MeV,~m_s=175~MeV and the heavy quark masses in the range: 1. GeV≤mc≤1.6 GeV, 4.1 GeV≤mb≤4.5 GeV1.~GeV\leq m_c\leq1.6~GeV,~4.1~GeV\leq m_b\leq4.5~GeV. In the case of light neutral mesons one obtains with the same set of parameters Fπ0≈138 MeV, Fη≈ 130 MeV,Fη′≈ 78 MeVF_{\pi^0}\approx 138~MeV,~F_\eta\approx~130~MeV,F_{\eta'} \approx~78~MeV.     Decay constants, semi-leptonic and non-leptonic decays in a Bethe-Salpeter Model

    We evaluate the decay constants for the B and DD mesons and the form factors for the semileptonic decays of the B meson to DD and D∗D^* mesons in a Bethe-Salpeter model. From data we extract Vcb=0.039±0.002V_{cb}=0.039 \pm 0.002 from Bˉ→D∗lνˉ{\bar B} \to D^* l {\bar{\nu}} and Vcb=0.037±0.004V_{cb}=0.037 \pm 0.004 from Bˉ→Dlνˉ{\bar B} \to D l {\bar{\nu}} decays. The form factors are then used to obtain non-leptonic decay partial widths for B→DÏ€(K) B\to D \pi (K) and B→DD(Ds)B \to D D (D_s) in the factorization approximation.Comment: 15 Pages, 3 Postscript figures (available also from [email protected]

    Semileptonic B decays to excited charmed mesons

    Exclusive semileptonic B decays into excited charmed mesons are investigated at order ΛQCD/mQ\Lambda_{QCD}/m_Q in the heavy quark effective theory. Differential decay rates for each helicity state of the four lightest excited DD mesons (D1D_1, D2∗D_2^*, D0∗D_0^*, and D1∗D_1^*) are examined. At zero recoil, ΛQCD/mQ\Lambda_{QCD}/m_Q corrections to the matrix elements of the weak currents can be written in terms of the leading Isgur-Wise functions for the corresponding transition and meson mass splittings. A model independent prediction is found for the slope parameter of the decay rate into helicity zero D1D_1 at zero recoil. The differential decay rates are predicted, including ΛQCD/mQ\Lambda_{QCD}/m_Q corrections with some model dependence away from zero recoil and including order αs\alpha_s corrections. Ratios of various exclusive branching ratios are computed. Matrix elements of the weak currents between BB mesons and other excited charmed mesons are discussed at zero recoil to order ΛQCD/mQ\Lambda_{QCD}/m_Q. These amplitudes vanish at leading order, and can be written at order ΛQCD/mQ\Lambda_{QCD}/m_Q in terms of local matrix elements.     The Isgur-Wise functions for the ground state to ground state semileptonic decays involving b→cb \rightarrow c transitions are calculated from the (modified) MIT bag model. It is checked that the results for the decays B‾→Dlν‾\overline{B} \rightarrow D l \overline\nu and B‾→D∗lν‾\overline{B} \rightarrow D^* l \overline\nu agree well with experiment. Predictions for the decays Λb→Λclν‾\Lambda_b \rightarrow \Lambda_c l \overline\nu, B‾s→Dslν‾\overline{B}_s \rightarrow D_s l \overline\nu and B‾s→Ds∗lν‾\overline{B}_s \rightarrow D^*_s l \overline\nu are given and discussed.Comment: 12 pages (3 figures available upon request), LaTeX, TPJU - 9/9

    Effects of neutral gas release on current collection during the CHARGE-2 rocket experiment

    Observations of current collection enhancements due to cold nitrogen gas control jet emissions from a highly charged rocket payload in the ionosphere are reported. These observations were made during the second cooperative high altitude rocket gun experiment (CHARGE-2) which was an electrically tethered mother/daughter payload system. The current collection enhancement was observed at the daughter payload located 100 to 400 m away from the mother which was firing an energetic electron beam. The authors interpret these results in terms of an electrical discharge forming in close proximity to the daughter during the short periods of gas emission. The results indicate that it is possible to enhance the electron current collection capability of positively charged vehicles by means of deliberate neutral gas releases into an otherwise undisturbed space plasma. These results can also be compared with recent laboratory observations of hollow cathode plasma contactors operating in the ignited mode. Experimental observations of current collection enhancements due to cold nitrogen gas control jet emissions from a highly charged, isolated daughter payload in the nighttime ionosphere were made. These observations were derived from the second cooperative high altitude rocket gun experiment (CHARGE-2) which was an electrically tethered mother-daughter payload system. The rocket flew from White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in December, 1985. The rocket achieved an altitude of 261 km and carried a 1 keV electron beam emitting up to 48 mA of current (Myers, et al., 1989a). The mother payload, carried the electron beam source, while the daughter acted as a remote current collection and observation platform and reached a distance of 426 m away from the main payload. Gas emissions at the daughter were due to periodic thruster jet firings to maintain separation velocity between the two payloads

    Test of the Running of αs\alpha_s in τ\tau Decays

    The τ\tau decay rate into hadrons of invariant mass smaller than s0≫ΛQCD\sqrt{s_0}\gg\Lambda_{\rm QCD} can be calculated in QCD assuming global quark--hadron duality. It is shown that this assumption holds for s0>0.7s_0>0.7~GeV2^2. From measurements of the hadronic mass distribution, the running coupling constant αs(s0)\alpha_s(s_0) is extracted in the range 0.7~GeV2<s0<mτ2^2<s_0<m_\tau^2. At s0=mτ2s_0=m_\tau^2, the result is αs(mτ2)=0.329±0.030\alpha_s(m_\tau^2)=0.329\pm 0.030.
