SHIP MOTION SHORT TERM TIME DOMAIN SIMULATOR AND ITS APPLICATION TO COSTA CONCORDIA EMERGENCY MANOEUVRES JUST BEFORE THE JANUARY 2012 ACCIDENT
In this paper we will present a simple but reliable methodology for short term prediction of a cruise ship behaviour during manoeuvres. The methodology is quite general and could be applied to any kind of ship, because it does not require the prior knowledge of any structural or mechanical parameter of the ship. It is based only on the results of manoeuvrability data contained in the Manoeuvring Booklet, which in turn is filled out after sea trials of the ship performed before his delivery to the owner.
We developed this method to support the investigations around the Costa Concordia shipwreck, which happened near the shores of Italy in January 2012. It was then validated against the data recorded in the “black box” of the ship, from which we have been able to extract an entire week of voyage data before the shipwreck. The aim was investigating the possibility of avoiding the impact by performing an evasive manoeuvre (as ordered by the Captain some seconds before the impact, but allegedly misunderstood by the helmsman). The preliminary validation step showed a good matching between simulated and real values (course and heading of the ship) for a time interval of a few minutes.
The fact that the method requires only the results registered in the VDR (Voyage Data Recorder) during sea trial tests, makes it very useful for several applications. Among them, we can cite forensic investigation, the development of components for autopilots, the prediction of the effects of a given manoeuvre in shallow water, the “a posteriori” verification of the correctness of a given manoeuvre and the use in training simulators for ship pilots and masters
Multiple Molecular H2 Outflows in AFGL 618
We report high spatial (0.5 arcsec) and high spectral (9 km/s) resolution
spectro-imaging of the 2.12 micron H2 1-0 S(1) line in the proto-planetary
nebula AFGL 618 using BEAR at the CFHT. The observations reveal the presence of
multiple, high-velocity, molecular outflows that align with the remarkable
optical jets seen in HST images. The structure and kinematics of the outflows
show how jets interact with circumstellar gas and shape the environment in

The phase diagram of L\'evy spin glasses
We study the L\'evy spin-glass model with the replica and the cavity method.
In this model each spin interacts through a finite number of strong bonds and
an infinite number of weak bonds. This hybrid behaviour of L\'evy spin glasses
becomes transparent in our solution: the local field contains a part
propagating along a backbone of strong bonds and a Gaussian noise term due to
weak bonds. Our method allows to determine the complete replica symmetric phase
diagram, the replica symmetry breaking line and the entropy. The results are
compared with simulations and previous calculations using a Gaussian ansatz for

Cocirculation of Hajj and non-Hajj strains among serogroup W meningococci in Italy, 2000 to 2016
In Italy, B and C are the predominant serogroups among meningococci causing invasive diseases. Nevertheless, in the period from 2013 to 2016, an increase in serogroup W Neisseria meningitidis (MenW) was observed. This study intends to define the main characteristics of 63 MenW isolates responsible of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in Italy from 2000 to 2016. We performed whole genome sequencing on bacterial isolates or single gene sequencing on culturenegative samples to evaluate molecular heterogeneity. Our main finding was the cocirculation of the Hajj and the South American sublineages belonging to MenW/ clonal complex (cc)11, which gradually surpassed the MenW/cc22 in Italy. All MenW/cc11 isolates were fully susceptible to cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, penicillin G and rifampicin. We identified the fulllength NadA protein variant 2/3, present in all the MenW/cc11. We also identified the fHbp variant 1, which we found exclusively in the MenW/cc11/Hajj sublineage. Concern about the epidemic potential of MenW/cc11 has increased worldwide since the year 2000. Continued surveillance, supported by genomic characterisation, allows high-resolution tracking of pathogen dissemination and the detection of epidemicassociated strains
Molecular gas in QSO host galaxies at z>5
We present observations with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer of three
QSOs at z>5 aimed at detecting molecular gas in their host galaxies as traced
by CO transitions. CO (5-4) is detected in SDSSJ033829.31+002156.3 at z=5.0267,
placing it amongst the most distant sources detected in CO. The CO emission is
unresolved with a beam size of ~1", implying that the molecular gas is
contained within a compact region, less than ~3kpc in radius. We infer an upper
limit on the dynamical mass of the CO emitting region of ~3x10^10
Msun/sin(i)^2. The comparison with the Black Hole mass inferred from near-IR
data suggests that the BH-to-bulge mass ratio in this galaxy is significantly
higher than in local galaxies. From the CO luminosity we infer a mass reservoir
of molecular gas as high as M(H2)=2.4x10^10 Msun, implying that the molecular
gas accounts for a significant fraction of the dynamical mass. When compared to
the star formation rate derived from the far-IR luminosity, we infer a very
short gas exhaustion timescale (~10^7 yrs), comparable to the dynamical
timescale. CO is not detected in the other two QSOs (SDSSJ083643.85+005453.3
and SDSSJ163033.90+401209.6) and upper limits are given for their molecular gas
content. When combined with CO observations of other type 1 AGNs, spanning a
wide redshift range (0<z<6.4), we find that the host galaxy CO luminosity
(hence molecular gas content) and the AGN optical luminosity (hence BH
accretion rate) are correlated, but the relation is not linear: L(CO) ~
[lambda*L_lambda(4400A)]^0.72. Moreover, at high redshifts (and especially at
z>5) the CO luminosity appears to saturate. We discuss the implications of
