Magnetic Properties of Pd_(0.996)Mn_(0.004) Films for High Resolution Thermometry

    Get PDF
We have previously reported on the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of thin Pd_(1−x)Mn_x alloy films. Extensive new measurements on sputtered films show that a commercial quality sputtering process produces a film with the same dependence of Curie temperature on x as previously reported for bulk samples of the same material. These measurements and parameters from the Renormalization Group theory for a Heisenberg ferromagnet, yield an estimate for T_c of 1.16 ± 0.01 K when x − 0.004, consistent with previously reported bulk result

    Global constants in (2+1)--dimensional gravity

The extended conformal algebra (so)(2,3) of global, quantum, constants of motion in 2+1 dimensional gravity with topology R x T^2 and negative cosmological constant is reviewed. It is shown that the 10 global constants form a complete set by expressing them in terms of two commuting spinors and the Dirac gamma matrices. The spinor components are the globally constant holonomy parameters, and their respective spinor norms are their quantum commutators.Comment: 14 pages, to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravity, Spacetime Safari: Essays in Honor of Vincent Moncrief on the Classical Physics of Strong Gravitational Field

The Quantum Modular Group in (2+1)-Dimensional Gravity

    Get PDF
The role of the modular group in the holonomy representation of (2+1)-dimensional quantum gravity is studied. This representation can be viewed as a "Heisenberg picture", and for simple topologies, the transformation to the ADM "Schr{\"o}dinger picture" may be found. For spacetimes with the spatial topology of a torus, this transformation and an explicit operator representation of the mapping class group are constructed. It is shown that the quantum modular group splits the holonomy representation Hilbert space into physically equivalent orthogonal ``fundamental regions'' that are interchanged by modular transformations.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX, no figures; minor changes and clarifications in response to referee (basic argument and conclusions unaffected

Decoherence of one-dimensional flying qubits due to their cross-talk and imperfections

We study decoherence of propagating spin-1/2 excitations in generic (non-integrable and/or disordered) spin chains. We find the relevant decoherence times to be shorter in both the near-critical and diffusive regimes (if any), which fact might have important implications for the recently proposed spin chain-based implementations of quantum information processing.Comment: Latex, 5 pages, no figure

The Benefits of Peer Review and a Multisemester Capstone Writing Series on Inquiry and Analysis Skills in an Undergraduate Thesis.

This study examines the relationship between the introduction of a four-course writing-intensive capstone series and improvement in inquiry and analysis skills of biology senior undergraduates. To measure the impact of the multicourse write-to-learn and peer-review pedagogy on student performance, we used a modified Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education rubric for Inquiry and Analysis and Written Communication to score senior research theses from 2006 to 2008 (pretreatment) and 2009 to 2013 (intervention). A Fisher-Freeman-Halton test and a two-sample Student's t test were used to evaluate individual rubric dimensions and composite rubric scores, respectively, and a randomized complete block design analysis of variance was carried out on composite scores to examine the impact of the intervention across ethnicity, legacy (e.g., first-generation status), and research laboratory. The results show an increase in student performance in rubric scoring categories most closely associated with science literacy and critical-thinking skills, in addition to gains in students' writing abilities

Gauge theory of disclinations on fluctuating elastic surfaces

A variant of a gauge theory is formulated to describe disclinations on Riemannian surfaces that may change both the Gaussian (intrinsic) and mean (extrinsic) curvatures, which implies that both internal strains and a location of the surface in R^3 may vary. Besides, originally distributed disclinations are taken into account. For the flat surface, an extended variant of the Edelen-Kadic gauge theory is obtained. Within the linear scheme our model recovers the von Karman equations for membranes, with a disclination-induced source being generated by gauge fields. For a single disclination on an arbitrary elastic surface a covariant generalization of the von Karman equations is derived.Comment: 13 page

Self-Consistent Screening Approximation for Flexible Membranes: Application to Graphene

    Get PDF
Crystalline membranes at finite temperatures have an anomalous behavior of the bending rigidity that makes them more rigid in the long wavelength limit. This issue is particularly relevant for applications of graphene in nano- and micro-electromechanical systems. We calculate numerically the height-height correlation function G(q)G(q) of crystalline two-dimensional membranes, determining the renormalized bending rigidity, in the range of wavevectors qq from 10710^{-7} \AA1^{-1} till 10 \AA1^{-1} in the self-consistent screening approximation (SCSA). For parameters appropriate to graphene, the calculated correlation function agrees reasonably with the results of atomistic Monte Carlo simulations for this material within the range of qq from 10210^{-2} \AA1^{-1} till 1 \AA1^{-1}. In the limit q0q\rightarrow 0 our data for the exponent η\eta of the renormalized bending rigidity κR(q)qη\kappa_R(q)\propto q^{-\eta} is compatible with the previously known analytical results for the SCSA η0.82\eta\simeq 0.82. However, this limit appears to be reached only for q<105q<10^{-5} \AA1^{-1} whereas at intermediate qq the behavior of G(q)G(q) cannot be described by a single exponent.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
